hallo seniors. may i know how about dentistry? Which reference books that are needed?thz you..

just come, n learn from there on...nobody's gonna punish you for not buying books....
when you're here, you'll know what books to buy, and what not...boils down personal preference...
plus it's cheaper if you buy when you get here...buy in bulks, from kamal bookstore....

but just in case, you're still stubborn and still wanna buy...here's a quick list of what my friends usually use....

Oral Anatomy, Histology & Embryology (Berkovitz)
Oral Physiology (DB Ferguson) < Who also happens to give lectures on this subject...
Apllied Dental Materials (McCabe)
Permanent Prosthodontics (dunno)
Removable Partial Dentures (dunno)
Dental Therepeutics (dunno)
Oral Pathology (Soames)
Dental Public Health (dunno)
The Principles of Endodontics (Manogue)
Periodontal Disease (dunno)
Handbook of Local Anesthesia (Malamed)
Oral Radiology: Principles & Interpretation (White)

Other books:
Oxford Handbook of Dental Patient Care
Management of Medical Emergencies for the Dental Team

And many others which I haven't had the need to use, yet....like Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry etc...

Every batch is different even ever so slightly.
But for first year it usually follows the following:

*CA is continuous assessment
8 weeks; 1 week CA1; 1 week holidays
8 weeks; 1 week CA2; 2 weeks mid-year break
8 weeks; 1 week CA3; 1 week holidays
8 weeks; 1 week CA4;
3 weeks study holidays;
2 - 3 weeks Finals;
8 weeks end of the year holidays

and u need to know all of these are subject to change.
hope i helped.

the one week breaks can say nearer to festive holidays in malaysia? like hari raya, deepavalli, CNY, christmas, etc.. or izit based on solely on AIMST?? then those public holidays just break for that particular day only la??

keep buying, if you have book-buying habits. there is nothing wrong if you have the cash, no one can stop you from buying. well, only if you have the time to read it. exam-oriented or knowledge-based learning, you decide. let me do some categorization:
if you're,
1) slow-type - read more, try to understand or be a good scanner, mix with the smart type to get infos, memorise all the facts, eventually you can pass - strive hard
2) smart-type - spot questions, fast-digesting real contents, notes handout sufficient, last minute (1 month before finals), can pass also lah, possible to score A
3) kia-su type - buy more books, print all the notes, hide your knowledge, 24/7 books or notes, discuss with kia-suS geek, score A, confirm A. still cannot get A? maybe you're slow type.
4) normal - read notes enough lah, don't bother about the kia-sus, can pass
5) low proficiency of english - not a big deal, memorise and vomit, work hard k

sadly, welcome to our exam-oriented nation. when a mass production of porous souls matter before the mental development of individuals. it's the fact, and we're the victims. study smart. balance up, go and get a life, enjoy your 20s.

anyway, is your choice, anatomy or life? or both? define yourself. good luck.

kennethwongpk...u had just spoken out what im thinking now. undeniable, study is the 1st priority of all students. but, it is not the only matter in our study years. isn't it?? of course i have positioned my studies before all things but, sometime it has to be my last consideration.

i remembered someone once has told me this, 'the more you study, the more you know'. it is subjective! i see people come and go, even my own friends and fellow classmates. some of them are fit enough to continue, unfortunately, something just went wrong here and there.

it is the matter on how do a person study, as i said it is subjective. person cannot follows a person's way of study. so, shape and mold your own way smartly.

there are few types of people in my surrounding... rclxub.gif
1) do not know anythg, but keep quiet and learn
2) do not know anythg, but don care, try harder next time!
3) know a little bit, but exaggearated as he knows everythg
4) know something, and pretend to be fool
5) know something but it must be proven
6) know something but kind to share
7) know for examination only

knowledge will never meet it's end. if a person lived and was craving for knowledge for 100year, there are still another 100 years of knowledge to be earned. and, im not asking anyone not to seek for knowledge or study, but do give yourself a break. student's life is not all about study only, it's also containing another interesting part of it. biggrin.gif

personal point of view

Good talk, guys. How many years of students life will you have in your lifetime? study and play hard at the same time, that's our gangs principle. Hahaa.

Anyhow, i've bought plenty of books. But none of em's i've thoroughly read thru, still lookin' new on my bookshelves. So, you decide to buy or not to buy. lecturers will keep asking you to buy it though. wink.gif
