theory is the bold sony designers finished the xz design without logo but sony big boss chicken out no balls last minute to exclude it, thats why they slapped it on. I personally think the design of xz with the unique vaio inspired power button is iconic enough to stand as sony designed even without logo.

Ok.. here's a bit of review after 2 days using the phone... the phone is smooth as butter... but camera start up is a bit laggy... i wonder if it's software issue....

camera: you'll only get the maximum of 12 megapixel if you are snapping in superior auto and with HDR on... if you wanna snap in 13 megapixel, u'll have to off the HDR and choose normal mode... Maybe sony can fix this in the upcoming update (mind you i was using the phone start out of box, not firmware update yet)

battery life: i'm a moderate user... didn't use my phone to browse the web... only standby to receive calls and sms.... so, i dun think i can comment much on it...

heat issues: there's a significant heat issues on the phone as well but not as hot as HTC one X... my wife is using HTC one X and her phone is pretty hot when in heavy use... mine seems ok

call quality: i think it's standard...

wifi signal strength: could be better... clearly my wife's HTC one X receive more signal compare to mine... i'm jelly

viewing angle: could be better

resolution: it's awesome... but i have this problem that the last page of my apps, the lighting is dimmer compare to others... when ever i scroll to the last page of my apps... the light is dimmer... kinda unnoticeable at first... but then i found out... i wonder if it is software issues... pls fix it Sony...

the front screen is the same, both using dragontrail
the back of xperia z is using gorilla glass

if the impact is strong the glass will crack also, not drop proof

There is a couple of custom ROM available for ZL now on xda forum for anyone interested, AOKP and CM10.1.

On the other note, ZL remote control app is pretty cool. At first I thought it only supports Sony devices but there is tons of supported devices there. I have yet to find the right one to control Astro

Drop proof depends on how you drop it - the height it is drop from, the angle the phone hits the floor, the construction type/surface of the floor. I have tested mine twice dropping it casually from waist height onto terazzo floor, phone was OK without any damages to edges and display. Dare not test it any further.
The only other phone that I have tested without any damage was HTC One X. Did it after I saw the demo at Spore launching where the presenter threw it hard onto the floor several times.
Other phones - eg those Samsung, Nexus, iphones - I will never dare to test as so many video shows the glass will crack

Charging speed is not bad - I recorded about 40% battery level increase in an hour charging
I am using a USB port iPAD charger with HTC cable

Root is necessary if you wanted to mod any file system. Yep custom ROM usually mean you need to unlock bootloader and root phone first to install custom recovery, although there is custom ROM on locked bootloader but the functionality is limited because of stock kernel. Custom kernel can unlock more functionality like voltage controls and such. But that is not all, you need to read more then you know what's what.

If you mean pureXaudio you need to read the thread carefully here. It looks like you can use pureXaudio with locked bootloader but you need custom recovery like clockworkmod. Everyone a newbie from the start, the only difference is to learn and do it yourself

The anti shatter film does not add integrity to the glass, if the impact will break the glass, having the film will break as well. The film can avoid injuring the user when the glass is already broken.
