Getting Started

|
But being fair for suntour, i used to jump and ride with suntour XCT V2. Its stiff and from a rider's perspective, yes hand becomes tired really really quickly. But i learnt to absorb impacts with my body and conform to it. Trust, me pumping with a stiff front end is the shiznit. Very quick learning curve and we can ride faster.
Now i'm using XCR (OEM butchered from a marin bike) and it does the job well as well. hate the remote so i dismantled the cable since i dont need it anyway. Its good. Leaks though so make sure u take good care of it. But it takes bumps well. I can drop gaps and jumps and its handling well. except for the squeaks. But thats pretty much it.

QUOTE(hon kin @ Jun 15 2013, 11:44 PM) Hi to every sifus here! I'm quite a newbie on biking. Currently looking for a Giant bike with ATX7 frame. Don't really like the front fork performance though... So i wanna change a new/better fork. Due to really tight on budget, i spotted the suntour xcm v3. Would it fit on the ATX7 frame? Which criteria should i look for if i wanna change the front fork? Thanks! =) Suntour's coiled forks are... not to my liking. Honestly they're so keras. IF you're on the budget, you might want to consider Suntour's Epicon X1. Local retail pricing goes from RM500 - RM700. However if you can read mandarin you might want to consider buying from Taobao. Some mates of mine bought it from this site for RM400+ with shipment. Bring the fork to your local shop, and pasang siap. Not one of the best air forks around, but I'd say best value for money at that price. Definitely won't feel as plush as them Fox, Rockshox, Manitou or even DT Swiss forks, but it'll do the job better than them XCM/XCR forks

Air/oil over coil springs any day. with air there is infinite adjustability and lighter weight.

Yes stiff forks does force your body to adapt and allows your arms to learn how to absorb the impact, which is fairly good training yes - I learned the hard way too... back then I only had a steel framed rigid fork bike and was already pumping trails in Kiara, sibeh painful rides ooo. But syok gila. QUOTE(dickybird @ Jun 17 2013, 02:37 PM) Air/oil over coil springs any day. with air there is infinite adjustability and lighter weight. Yes! Air forks anytime due to weight and adjustability. Coiled forks are so late 90's

Dunno wor... not familiar with DH bikes. True also hor, afaik they are still running coil. Any explanation sifu Cyphereza? UPDATE - Reading this articleOn the other side of the coin there is increased friction caused by the seals required by the air spring and the increased seal surface area, increases in spring rate as temps go up under hard use (remember that air expands as its warms up), and fluctuating damping levels due to both the air spring's rate changing and heat build-upThis post has been edited by sebnimh84: Jun 17 2013, 04:26 PM

Coils are still popular in DH is because it still absorbs pretty great from the amount of plushness to stiffness. Although currently they're testing air shocks and air DH forks are almost ready for the market, probably 2014-2015.

Well, i'm really a begineer, so i dont really want to spend too much before upgrading to the really good one. I was aiming something at RM200, and yeap, i'm thinking to get the XCR from taobao, which will cost me around RM200 with shipping included.

Just tried a Exitway bike with a Suntour XCT fork on it and the response is slightly stiffer than i thought, but i still can take it. And just realize the XCM is a higher grade version. I think i gonna get the XCM V3 ...
