Agree... Actually asking people what their money can buy is totally subjective. Different people different taste. I say buy bike A for 1k, another person say buy bike B better... in the end person buy entirely different bike.

Some like the looks, some people think drivetrain is the most important factor. How la to satisfy. Doing some research on the parts used, asking around on the durability/quality/etc of the components. Need to do some homework to understand what compromise must be made when you look for such a MTB.
FYI.. Bought my first rm1.4k bike 10 years ago. Haro frame with alivio drivetrain, rockshox Jett, some cheap wheels, unknown v brakes, running sun race 8 speed cassette. Enjoy the hell out of that bike for years. Even went for 1st Kayuh Lasak with it, numerous hash and brutal offroad rides. Compromise... So so shifting, heavy, poor quality wheels, hard and stiff like hell fork. Knew I only can get so much and suck up the pain/abuse but he'll yeah it was fun. Then things start to wear and breakdown fast. first, replaced drivetrain to 1st generation sRAM X0 after a year. Huge difference in shifting. Bike start to get lighter... Then change fork to Rockshox duke... Much better but still little stiff and flexy. Then change to Mavic rims with XTR hubs... Then... Then... Well the MTB poison keeps getting more additive... In the end look back and thought... I could have saved more money from the start by just buying a better bike right. Well lesson learnt the hard way. Also found that my frame was a tad bigger. So equipped with all the right knowledge, went on to build my second mostly ebay sourced component bike... Better. So page #1 captures quite a bit of useful info. Kudos to you guys who put it up. Then do homework by visiting bike shops, find more info on the parts, etc.

yeah props to the peeps who do page 1!
man that 1.4k ride of yours sound sweet.
i still have my jamis durango HT that i got in london in 2002 for my daily commute, i had a spez hardrock in a v pretty blue n yellow for 3 months before that but i got it stolen. it cost rm1.8k in 2002. she helped me to explore london and for a while even served as a commute bike here in kl.
like yours, my jamis, has seen drivetrain upgrades from alivio to deore, 3 forks from judy to bomber to now tora. and now she is undergoing upgrades to make her my tarmac spec HT.
point is, i got her after doing my own homework and visiting the local bike shops who were all very willing to help and even though i still wonder about that stolen spez, and i have gotten a FS and foldie, i still have my Jamis in my quiver of bikes.
