@Broadica,

I believe that is a flawed argument. Here's why:

1. If you want to buy a 4X4, that doesn't mean you are going to go serious off roading. Most likely 90% of those 4X4 owners have never been to one but is buying a Toyota 4X4 the same as buying a Kia 4X4? Surely not.

2. All products, including MTB, 4X4 or even shoes has some form of product differentiation. Some products are just better than others even in the similar price range even if the difference may be marginal.

3. This is an MTB thread and thus it should cater for people who are interested in MTB and not necessarily for serious off-roading alone. Those who do serious MTB most likely are less than those who want to just ride an MTB or have some fun in their Taman. By saying that anything less than $1000, you just choose color, you are not addressing the biggest number of MTBer's who are casual and not serious riders and we are asking MTB questions in an MTB forum.

Thanks.

1. true that one can buy 4x4 and never off road.
but then in this thread, we are talking about mountain biking... not mountain bike. just like you in a forum talking about 4x4 offroading and not 4x4 car. both toyota and kia without proper fitting for off roading, both wont functions in real offroading anyway.

2. yes they are differentiation, but some are so marginal different that it do not matter in certain condition. the different can be make up by one's personal preference rather than general advice

3. this is "mountain biking" thread... not MTB bike thread. so i hope you position yourself clearer!! MTBer = mountain bikers!! so we are not addressing the issue of general casual cyclist.

well, i hope you get what i mean.. obviously we come in with different perception and position in this thread.

we are not here to address people who think they are ENTITLED to know what bike they should get for rm1k.
4X4 comparison is out of topic. if they want a qualitative comparison between 2 rm1k bikes ask their LBS.
Moreover MTB is a full butthurt sport, so if you are too lazy to do your homework and just expect people to just spoonfeed you about whatever bike than you are going to get butthurt.

Are you saying at certain price range eg Rm1000 range or Rm2000 range, all the bike are more or less the same.

I strongly disagree as I believe there are some bikes that are better build or equiped even at the same price range.  Some rides better etc.  To simply say choose the color you like sound more like an insult to the budget rider.
*
so do your homework, do not just think people here who almost certainly ride bikes at least 2x that price range will know or care to know what is good in the bargain basement.
if you do not like the answer you get whether from fora or your LBS then do your homework.

If you could read, I wasn't asking you for anything nor did I bring in the 4X4 comparison.

@Brodica,

>3. this is "mountain biking" thread... not MTB bike thread.

My perception, like some others would be that this is the closest to the MTB thread at LYT. Anyway I get your point.

Agree... Actually asking people what their money can buy is totally subjective. Different people different taste. I say buy bike A for 1k, another person say buy bike B better... in the end person buy entirely different bike. doh.gif Some like the looks, some people think drivetrain is the most important factor. How la to satisfy. Doing some research on the parts used, asking around on the durability/quality/etc of the components. Need to do some homework to understand what compromise must be made when you look for such a MTB.

FYI.. Bought my first rm1.4k bike 10 years ago. Haro frame with alivio drivetrain, rockshox Jett, some cheap wheels, unknown v brakes, running sun race 8 speed cassette. Enjoy the hell out of that bike for years. Even went for 1st Kayuh Lasak with it, numerous hash and brutal offroad rides. Compromise... So so shifting, heavy, poor quality wheels, hard and stiff like hell fork. Knew I only can get so much and suck up the pain/abuse but he'll yeah it was fun. Then things start to wear and breakdown fast. first, replaced drivetrain to 1st generation sRAM X0 after a year. Huge difference in shifting. Bike start to get lighter... Then change fork to Rockshox duke... Much better but still little stiff and flexy. Then change to Mavic rims with XTR hubs... Then... Then... Well the MTB poison keeps getting more additive... In the end look back and thought... I could have saved more money from the start by just buying a better bike right. Well lesson learnt the hard way. Also found that my frame was a tad bigger. So equipped with all the right knowledge, went on to build my second mostly ebay sourced component bike... Better. So page #1 captures quite a bit of useful info. Kudos to you guys who put it up. Then do homework by visiting bike shops, find more info on the parts, etc.

yeah props to the peeps who do page 1!
man that 1.4k ride of yours sound sweet.
i still have my jamis durango HT that i got in london in 2002 for my daily commute, i had a spez hardrock in a v pretty blue n yellow for 3 months before that but i got it stolen. it cost rm1.8k in 2002. she helped me to explore london and for a while even served as a commute bike here in kl.
like yours, my jamis, has seen drivetrain upgrades from alivio to deore, 3 forks from judy to bomber to now tora. and now she is undergoing upgrades to make her my tarmac spec HT. wub.gif
point is, i got her after doing my own homework and visiting the local bike shops who were all very willing to help and even though i still wonder about that stolen spez, and i have gotten a FS and foldie, i still have my Jamis in my quiver of bikes.

Hahaha... exactly.

P/s: Most of us are enthusiasts. Want to do mountain biking? Do it properly. If you want to ride around taman, just get any bike that you're keen with. But please refrain from riding a taman bike offroad. Yes, you can try, but we don't you to jatuh and patah tangan and MC for two months whistling.gif

Ok I would recommend this as a potential 1k bike to ride around in the taman tongue.gif
But bro, sweet bike! Go frim use bike carrier and mrr2. Jangan kayuh kat mrr2 maha Bahaya!
Another choice is to ride the old trunk road to pahang, half way up to getting sempah, very popular with cyclists too.
Just enjoy!
