The Complete Dummy's Guide to Xbox 360 and Windows XP Media Center.

Windows XP Media Center is another operating system something like Windows 98 , Windows NT and etc.

In short XP Media Center is an extension of XP Professional.

Things you can do with with Xbox 360 with XP Media Center.
- stream movies from your computer to your TV (MPG/AVI/DIVX/etc)
- stream musics from your computer to your TV
- save all your DVD to your computer
- purchase movies from Internet (Broadband connection required)
- watch US news (Broadband connection required)
- the list goes on...

What do you need
- XP Media Center OS
- A computer
- Xbox 360 (link within the same network as your computer)
- TV
- Broadband connection
- 1 ADSL Modem
- 1 Broadband Router with 4 LAN port(DHCP enabled)

How to set up (my options)
- Plug your telephone line to your ADSL modem
- Using network cable plug both your ADSL modem and Router (WAN port)
- Using network cable plug both your PC and Router (LAN port)
- Using network cable plug both your Xbox 360 and Router (LAN port)
- Turn on your computer and Xbox 360
- Make sure both your PC and Xbox 360 can connect to internet
- From Xbox 360 Dashboard - Media Blade, press "Media Center"
- Follow the instructions
- Done

Wireless recommendation
- Read on.

Streaming
- Read on.

Many thanks to Stringfellow for his contribution. thumbup.gif

Stringfellow is the only one I know who's done that. Have to check with him.

I've only set up Windows Media Connect for my 360 to notebook.

Anyone tried to link/stream movie before using the above method ? How's the quality ?

If i am running Media Center in Malaysia, can I watch US standard broadcast shows ?

or can i purchase movie's from it ??

any ideas guys ??
*
i don't think you can watch US tv broadcasts with windows xp mce. what the thing actually does is download tv guide from the net only, the broadcast is tuned from the tv card, be it analogue or digital. anyway, i dont hv xp mce, contact stringfellow for more info.

PM received and responded to you Goodspeed. Im in the process of re-encoding every important title in my library to WMv as we speak.Long arduous process i admit, but once it is done, the MCE PC will become the digital hub for every movie i wanna watch. I only need an Extender for the living room, and possible my bro coming back from UK bring back his PAL 360 to connect to the MCE as another Extender. The MCE PC can support up to 5 Extenders i believe.

I done audio and song ripping into the MCe Pc, and it is running smoothly . Using your free iTunes with FEtchArt to fetch the album art. Pictures from my vacations , worktrips, and other important business/social events are also placed into the MCe PC ( i have a 180Gb hot-swappable HP Personal Media Drive for all this, already encoded close to 50 movies, tons of songs, and albums of pictures, and still have a lot more space to fill, i plan to buy the Media Drives separately as future storage investment, since they are hot-swappable like memory cards).

Feel free to ask here if you have any queries.

I have given up on the "streaming Divx to your Xbox 360" transcoding method, as you dont have control over image quality of the transcoded movies your are streaming. It will consume temporary storage space, so having them in Divx and transcoding them on the fly, is not a preferred solution for me. But i understand that a lot of us have our movies in Divx/Xvid for the excellent picture quality: filesize ratio.

So now all my movie are in WMV format, encoded using Windows Media Encoder at my own custom profile settings. The results retains the resolution in which the movies resides in DVDs( or previous file formats), and in case of the DVDs, shrinks them to between 30-40% of the original filesize. You will get better results if you compress them further at the expense of picture quality if you want, but the movies i have encoded are meant as quality video streams for watching in my home theatre environment, when entertaining guests and friends when they came over. They dont even realise that they are watching a re-encoded WMV instead of a standard MPEG2 stream from a DVD! laugh.gif

I researched WMV-HD that will be my next goal. But doing so requires purchasing of special encoding softwares( which includes licenses as well) and it comes only bundled with the appropriate hardwares to do so ( mostly professional video editor are using, and that is a bit overkill). I have downloaded samples from www.wmvhd.com, and streamed it from the MCE PC to the Xbox 360 and the results puts even the "Welcome to Xbox 360" movie we all have in our 360s HDDs to shame. If only i can get hold of the appropriate softwares and licenses..., bear in mind , encoding a stadard DVd resolution WMV alone has me clocking up to 5 hrs to do the full encoding, minus the VOB ripping, and audio demux/muxing, but generally you need about 6 hours for a standard full motion picture movie to encode. But the results are breathtaking, likei said before, no differences between DVD and encoded WMV, PLUS all my encoded WMVs are Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, meaning they are not demuxed to shitty stereo, they retain their AC3 characteristics.....what this means is that, when that lightsaber in Episode III moves from a wide arc from top to bottom and left to right, my encoded WMVs, captured that same aural experience just like watchihng a DVD on a home theatre.

Any questions? Fire away!

And oh, if you're planning to stream wirelessly, i recently found out that Wireless "G" barely cut it. At my settings , there will be occasional audio breakups that the "G" bandwidth cannot accomodate, resulting in very slight pauses. I have recently won an auction in eBay on a dual "A+ G" router from DLink, DI-784, that will solve this streaming hiccups, since my MCE will streaming on the "A" bandwidth on the 5GHz band, while the rest of the internet/Xbox Live traffic will be routed via the "G" bandwidth on the 2.4Ghz band. Reason why these hiccups are evident is because the "G" band which operates in the 2.4Ghz band, are susceptible to interference from other electrical equipments like your cell phones, wireless cordless phone, even your microwave ovens. The "A" band is free from all these interferences.

All this info does not apply if you plan to draw Ethernet cables across your living quarters for a wired solution. I would rather like to keep my living area rather clutter free.

BTW, i think both Calvinz and Metalgrindsolid have set up MCE/360 combos of their own, jusdging from their Friends List status. You may want to get a second opinion from them.

Windows Media Encoder 9 Series

The current softwares im using to rip, demux/mux and encodes the audio and video from a DVD/foreign source are:-

For video, i use DVD Decrypter (with DeCSS + DVD Region X to enable reading other region DVDs), DVD2AVI and VFAPI. These softwares will rip, and encapsulates the ripped VOBs into an Avi container readable later by Windows MEdia Encoder.

For audio, after the VOBs are ripped, i use BeSweet v.0.6 to extract the AC3 files and separate them into 6 discrete channels ( FL, FR, FC, SL, SR, and LFE). You MUST use this particular version of BeSweet, otherwise you will not have the 6-channel profile used to separate the audio. Once the program does its work, i then author it back into Windows MEdia Encoder to encode a perfect WMV with 5.1.

Of course , if your video format has already been encoded into stereo, no amount of extraction will produce a 6-channel separate audio from BeSweet. This only applies to video files with surround capabilities embedded. This case is most evidently exemplified by the "ahem" videos downloaded from P2P source where they are already in stereo.

General rule of thumb, AVOID multiple re-encoding to reduce image quality loss. If you encode across the board from DVD to AVI to Divx-and then WMV, your video feed wont be as pure as the original feed.

PM me if you need a more thorough breakdown on how to go about this further.

If anyone lazy to encode DVDs, can buy off-the-shelf solutions like Sony's DVD jukebox.

Anyways...

Do anyone of you use the MyTV and the EPG?

Im not ENCODING or Burning a DVD, im encoding a WMV from a DVD and storing it into the hard drive. Otherwise it is easier to burn a DVd and play it by swapping it into the DVd drive. I want to avoid that by making the MCE as storage cache for all my movies.Button pushes from your couch or bed to change to a different movie, rather than having to get up and physically change the DVDs.

MyTV does zilch on mine.

String, got ur DI-784 up and running yet? How's the performance.

If anyone want to stream DIVX to the 360, can try the latest version of Transcode360. So far tested ok with my downloaded eps.

There two solutions for streaming Divx encoded movies to the 360.

mceDivX360
and
Transcode360

Of the two Transcode360 is the best if you want a hassle free solution.

before you start any installation on the pc make sure:

1. you need to run media extender in 360. follow on screen instructions in 360 until it gives you the code. after 360 gave you the code it will ask you to leave the 360 on a page and continue with installation in your pc.
2. i assume you already download the media extender installation file, which is around 90mb and now starts the installation in your pc.
3. during the pc installation it will ask you for the code.
4. after you key in the code i think now the pc will try to connect with 360.

bro dreamyghost, actually when i installed mce in my pc for the first time i just upgrade my OS didnt do any formatting. i think got some errors after that. then just format and install a new pure mce... it works fine until now.

*now with bro mka84's transcode very easy to watch divx. no need to convert at all. just play the divx and at the same it will convert itself.

i think the 7mb is the media connect only. you need to download the 90mb extender setup file.

I am using Transcode Beta 3 currently to run DiVx and XviD files on xbox 360 using MCE 2005. It is well your worthwhile to do this and setup MCE 2005 elsewhere instead of your living room.

To run .ts file (HDTV Streaming file), you need to install HDTVpump.
You can download HDTVpump from http://www.dvbportal.de/projects/hdtvpump/
You need to install this on the MCE 2005 for it to stream to xbox 360 via MCE 2005 Extender.

You get DD5.1 and HDTV output on your screen or panel via xbox 360 and it ROCKS!

xbox 360 upscales normal DVD movies to 480p only if not mistaken and MCE 2005 does the same upscales the DVD movies to 480p as well.

If you want a better upscaler use your ole xbox and install the current xbmc. You can upscale to 720p / 1080i. Tried and tested.

Use this link.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup

BUT...

If you have Windows XP Media Center Edition it'll download the Media Center Extender.
If you have Windows XP Home/Pro, it'll download Windows Media Connect.

To get the Media Center Extender you must have Windows XP Media Center Edition installed.

normal win xp is not the same as win xp mce. you need to have windows xp media center edition 2005 (win xp mce). so if you only running normal win xp in your pc then you only can use the media connect with your 360. you need to install win xp mce2005 as your operating system before you can use media center in the 360.

I missed this one earlier.

Transcode 360 Beta 4.1 Released

This new release of Transcode 360 features a user interface for managing your settings as well as a number of substantial improvements:
User Interface - Settings

There is a new 'Automatic' installation option that will run T360 in the task notification area (system tray); this makes configuration super-easy and mitigates the network permissions issues some users encountered.

Both 2 and 6 channel (5.1) AC3 is supported and the AV sync issue affecting NTSC content has been fixed. Note that due to reliability issues Forward/Backward Skip are disabled while streaming AC3 soundtracks.

In addition to regular playback of XviD and DivX, Transcode 360 supports DVD ISO and VIDEO_TS folder streaming with subtitles; determining the best combination of soundtrack/subtitles appropriate to you based on your locale.

Download the latest version of Transcode 360 [url=http://runtime360.com/blog/]here./url]

Cool.... now can stream DVD ISOs. Stringfellow, u wanna try this?

Sounds interesting. No longer had to encode to WMV already, and this comes with subtitles too! Try this later tonight! drool.gif

All i need to do now is to rip the ISOs off the DVDs and use this to stream it to the 360, compared to ripping the ISO, encoding to AVI, encapsulate into AVI container, rip the Ac3 into 6 channel WAVs, demuxing, and then re-encode into WMV with 5.1 format. Makes my life easier!

Im fairly sure the video would be no problem, how about the audio? If its streaming stereo only, im sticking with my longwinded method.

EDIT: Disregard that last paragraph. Supports 6 discrete channels!!! But FWD and RWD features are disabled when listening to AC3 soundtracks. sad.gif

OK, I've got my own MCE system setup already. Was actually setting it up to be a home server which shares the printer and other resources but I thought might as well install MCE on it so I can use the 360 to show off the gigs of photos that I've shot through out the years, not to mention that gives great WAF points so all is good.

Say hello to my little friend...
Attached Image

yes, it doesn't have a real keyboard or display cause I will hardly be using it directly it's main job is to act as a server.

Maybe I'll try out the video transcoding programs later.. maybe not.. still have my trusty XBMC for that!

Holy Shit Holy Shit Holy Shit Holy Shit!

Those with MCE paired with your 360 will FLIP!!!!!

I SALUTE you Microsoft! rclxm9.gif

Apply that new 360 update via LIVE now! Remember the VGA only upscaling for your DVDs? NOT ANYMORE!

Those with movies inside your MCE PCs will have ALL your movies UPSCALED TO the resolution you set on 360! That means, ALL my movies , stored in the MCE , ripped at 480p, now shows up at 1080i/720p! Pure EYE CANDY! thumbup.gif

Thank you SO MUCH MS! I <3 U!!!!!!! wub.gif wub.gif

My Matrix movies in 720p/1080i! All Pixar movie awesomeness in 720p/1080i! Bloody Star Wars Episode I till VI, in 720p/1080i!! I died and gone to HEAVEN!

The next step here is to find higher quality video sources (such as from HD-DVDs and Blueray discs, or WMVHD movies) at 720p and higher quality, and rip them one-to-one at original resolution.

This may be Microsoft's preparation for the upcoming HD-DVD addon not to far in the future.

perhaps you should try transcode360. i am using it very happy no problems at all. the only thing is must always remember to delete the so called "dummy" file in the transcode360 folder in the program files folder because if you dont delete it you'll run out disk space very soon.

Does the pirated versions of the MCE/Vista comes with the network performace tuner? This little app works wonders in determining if bandwidth is the culprit. If it is not, then it could either be your processing power (transcode eats into HDD space, hence reducing virtual memory) or you have not configures your router correctly.

Weird thing is, all routers wired or wireless , should work right out of the box. MCE is such an easy thing to configure, it does it for you when you start pairing it with a MEdia Extender. I got my second XB360 paired in like less than 3 minutes.

Sounds complicated. I suggest a thorough install-over, a.k.a format and reinstall your OS to MCE. Maybe Marauderz can shed some light into these errors.

From what little knowledge i understand, those errors looks like some installation files are missing.

Maybe we could get bro Judge in here, since he did his installation without any problems. Judge, did you install OVER your WinXP, or a reformat and clean install?

bro dreamy dont worry will be sending you something tomorrow morning.

* bro silencer also no problems with my MCE so i assumed maybe those errors because of corrupted disc. maybe only lah... so bro dreamy you just wait ok.

Yup, just as i suspected. Need to do clean install, Dreamyghost. Hold off the upgrade suggestion we talked about, a clean install might work without having to upgrade. I think the registry has gotten so messed up, when you did install over MCE.

Tried the beta yesterday, it does have a MCE built in. System requirements to run it must be really high. Tried to run it on an Athlon XP 1500+ with 512MB of RAM and it was slowwwww...

Maybe coz it's Beta. To tell you the truth, MCe setup on 360 (not Vista) is as simple as plug and play. You initial the setup from your 360, and then obtain the setup key. A prompt will pop out from your system tray indicating that an XB360 is attempting to connect/pairing, click that speech bubble and it will bring up the setup screen on the MCE. Type in the setup key, and the rest is done by onscreen prompts. Everything done!

You dont need to fiddle with port setting, forwardings and such, since MCE does that for you. Cant comment on Vista since i have yet to try it on any of my rigs.

Tried MCE within Vista Beta 2 Build 5384 a few times and it came out "incompatible region"!

Edited..found out through some other Blogs!

"As for another known issue, for those of you who have had the "Wrong Region, This disc's region code is incorrect for this console" error, the Xbox 360 Extender bits in Vista Beta 2 are for Region 1 only. Microsoft plans to open up the Extender functionality to other regions later on in the beta.

Hope this clears up two things that have been commonly asked about Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 2, Media Center and the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender functionality that is found in the current release."

if you got extra budget then you can purchase a real built-in media center pc that will allow you to all the full features in media center. but if you short of budget like me then just upgrade your pc operating system to windows xp media center edition 2005 and you can stream any of your divx files into your 360.

* full media center pc setup not cheap ler smile.gif

*
Answer:-

1. Media Center is a GUI installed over a normal WinXP, that way, you can control the aspects of media playing capabilities of a WinXP via the remote and user interfacing buttons/shortcuts. So, since a normal WinXP can play DivX, so does your MCE.

2. You can stream it to a Media Extender, provided your Media Extender supports and recognizes it. Some standalone ones like Phillips Streamiums are able to o so. In the case of XB360 as an Extender, technically you cant. But by clever way of transcoding an existing file format not supported by MCE, into a file format supported, and streaming this transcoded file across to your Extender, you can do so now.

Im picky with the quality of my movis, so i chose the longer route, i chose to encode them first before steraming them over. Transcoding , when performed, is left at the mercy of the preset transcoding quality of the program itself. I want to control this aspect first before streaming.

Just to add. You can customise the quality setting for Transcode360. With Beta 4 you also have to option to choose between different encoders. But you have to try it out and see which works the best for you.

I agree. Beta 4 provides that option. I just want more control over the quality process. And i still couldnt get Beta 4 to run smoothly on my setup, runtime errors abound.

As for running DVD VOBs and transcoding that on the fly, again, runtime error. That option would be acceptable to me since ripping out VOB files from DVDs is taking the purest form of video format without any encoding process applied. Because logically, encoding over from original purest format to another format, and then trancoding it again using Transcode360 is apply further degradation of image quality, since you're encoding once too many time. The most idea situation is to have the original video format run straight away, the next best is to only encode once, with programs that allows the most minimum image quality loss.

Best = play DVDs straight away on XB360. But this option only allows ONE DVD to play, not allowing storage.

Second best = from HDD. Usually movie files are ripped into particular format, often in smaller filesize to save space. This option allows Video on Demand like capability, but need to select the right encoding tools to preserve original source Image Quality (IQ).

Im currently doing this with Windows Media Encoder, with WMV 9.0 Professional and WMA 9.0, with select SDK dlls. From what i read, the only other format that would be on par with the IQ that i get from encoding with WME, is Divx at high bitrate. But if i do rip the movies into DiVx/Xvid, then the end result file needs to go through a second transcoding using Transcode360, which encodes into an MPEG file i believe. And these file formats from the transcoding process, are not up to my liking, as substantial IQ degradation occurs. I suspect that even when you have preset the video bitrate to a high value, say 9800kbps, with audio running at 320kbps 5.1 AC3, it is the nature of the codecs used by the Transcode360 programs and the nature of their encoding(video is Variable Bitrate(VBR), i believe, while audio is Constant Bitrate(CBR)) that degrades it too much to my liking.

A properly encoded WMV using WME at 2300kbps video bitrate, and 386kbps multichannel 5.1 WAV( AC3 ripped and separated into discrete channels), beats the end-result of Trancode360 IMO. I have tried this using DIvx Pro, even bought the program bundle, so that i have access to the codecs, the end result is very impressive once you turned it into high bitrate Divx. But once the transcoding occurs, the end result at the XB360 side is disappointing.

Of course, if you're not as picky as i am regarding IQ, then Transcode360 does the job satisfactorily. Me, im just cursed with eyes that can nitpick things on screen even when i didnt want to.

No problem..kacang! Get yourself a Vista Build 5472 ( coz this build supports other region of Xbox 360 ). Unplug the 360 from the network. Install Vista on your PC. Set the included MCE properly. Run it on "window mode" ( not full screen...so u can see the security prompt at the task bar! ). Plug in the 360 to the network and switch it on and voilla!! Vista will detect it.

Anyone who has experience working MCE with Astro please share their experience...I am thinking of building myself a MCE system, but if it cannot incorperate well with Astro (for example download Astro program guide), then I guess it lost one of its major usage, at least for me it is.

got astro EPG also whats the point? the MCE can't interact with astro decoder directly... the most u can get is video-in via composite/s-video only. and MCE can't even change the astro channel for u, so no automatic record. even if u hookup digital/analog tuner card also, still useless.... and no, u wont get fancy multiple small box channel preview from MCE, just single channel at a time from astro

1. Go to Network Connections from Control Panel.
2. Right-click your wireless adapter, then click Properties
3. Go to Advanced tab, enable Internet Connection Sharing then select the network adapter that's connected to your Xbox360 from the drop-down menu list.
4. Restart PC if necessary.

Even if his laptop runs MCE, he would have to set his built in wireless to act as an access point. If i am not mistaken, MC-to-360 does not allow having the MCe-machine connectint to the 360 using AdHoc protocol.

Unless your laptop running MCE able to run your wireless setup as an access point, then you are stuck with Media Connect ONLY. Correct me if im wrong, fellas.

Scout around for price for the Xbox Live Vision camera, can get for me the suggested retail price? I'll be going to the States from 13th till 22nd personally to get the camera.

Enough of the Ot methinks, let the thread get back to MCE discussions.

got astro EPG also whats the point? the MCE can't interact with astro decoder directly... the most u can get is video-in via composite/s-video only. and MCE can't even change the astro channel for u, so no automatic record. even if u hookup digital/analog tuner card also, still useless.... and no, u wont get fancy multiple small box channel preview from MCE, just single channel at a time from astro
*
You can change channel if you have IR Blaster (some MCE capture cards comes with it).
I wrote a little program that rips the listings from Astro's website and export it to XML. From there you can use a number of programs to import the listings into MCE EPG.

question. i've installed xpsp2 MCE edition 2005. then i've linked my 360 & my pc. and yes, through my 360 i can play my MP3 from my pc.. which is good. secondly, im trying to run Media center through 360, and it doesn't work. instead it gives me the code number to be use from pc.. which this is the confusing part. after i installed Media extender, it didn't ask me any codes (from 360) and straight away link & authorised my 360 to pc. sooo... did i do anything wrong? can anyone explain to me about 'transcode 360' and how to use it?

Thx in advance

Im a bit confused. This XP media center is like having a PC connected to a tv, no ? Do you control using the xbox or the pc ?

If it's not the same, what are the differences ? Thank u

Get it from Vertex at Lowyat. The remote control by itself you probably need to order. If you buy any of the Hauppage MCE kit tuners it'll come with it.

Got this from the Futuremark forum, thanks to ptaaty

Steps:
1. Ensure your x360 can actually see your Windows XP PC (you have windows media connect, and can stream music, etc)
2. Download the latest version of TVersity http://www.tversity.com/
3. Install.
4. Ensure TVersity service is stopped (start, programs, tversity, tversity tools, stop server)
5. download this http://s3.amazonaws.com/download.tve...ch_0_9_8_4.zip
6. unzip and place files in the media server folder in the default install path (\program files\TVersity)
7. Ensure Windows firewall is off or ensure port 41952 is allowed to pass. see http://tversity.com/faq.html#troubleshooting-faq for more issues.
*for me this was the stumbing block...I already had a hardware firewall, but my x360 could not see the server until I disabled the windowsxp one.
8. Start Tversity server and add folders to library that you want to share.
9. Go to the x360 and under connections, disconnect the PC, then when you click music, vids, or pics, the TVersity will show up.
10. On your x360 and go to videos. When you select it, if you did everything properly you should see something like "Tversity Server on XXXX" XXXX is computer name.

Common issues:
1. Codecs not installed...ensure that you have WMP 11 with codecs of things you want to transcode (ie install DIVX codec pack)
2. Wrong rez: go to the Transcoder settings on TVersity program, choose output rez.

I can see tversity server on my 360 but i cant connect, said got firewall blocking. I've already turned off windows firewall and forward the port on my router but still cannot connect rclxub.gif

they put that feature in since WMP11... and the last dashboard update added the 360 side of the feature. i removed it already coz when u share, windows media connect runs in the background and i hv no control over it. i dont stream all the time and i hv limited ram, switched back to wmp10 + wm connect.

Probably u're using older version of Vista Beta..probably Beta 2. Tested both MCE and WMC, and MCE are better than Windows Media Connect though streaming WMV movies to the 360. Btw...my 360 are Asian. If u want got myself another official copies of RC1.

sounds great coz i'm not really willing to pay them for that astro max decoder, the pricing and specs is such a scam!

but does it have one touch programming and integration into astro?

e.g. if i wanna record Sienfield do i just select it from the menu or state the start and end time of the show like during VCR days? sweat.gif

my C drive only 3gb free space still can transcoding from 360 but have to make sure after finish watching must delete the cache file inside transcode folder
when you press X button select MORE... then you'll see transcode360
*
Do we need to do it manually everytime? (deleting cache) No other way round?

Hi,

Could anybody here tell me how to stream non-wmv movies to the 360?

I have Tversity installed on my computer, alas on my 360 there's no 'Computer' option under Videos on the Media blade.

Is it my dashboard needs updating or do I miss something?

Thanks.

Check your firewall. Maybe its blocking 360 from accessing your pc. Just disable it for awhile and try again on your 360.

my advice if you wanna install winMCE you must reformat your c: and do a fresh installation. few other forumers that tried upgrade from winXP to winMCE received errors during installation.

winXP and winMCE almost the same lah. only got that media center additional functions only. off course torrent still can run lah and porn too!!! smile.gif

WMC looks nice and all, but functionality and format wise, XBMC beats it hands down... It works well with standard files (divx and all) on normal resolution, but once you go HD, xbox will show its age. Freaking laggy up to a point where it's not watchable.

Planning to get a TV soon, so media center setup is a must. I've tried transcode360 but the quality of the video seems to dip a little.

Heard about TVersity, how's the quality like?

Maybe I should stick with Xbox 1 for now eh?

What kinda error? I just tried TVersity, works fine over here.

Just make sure you set the user accounts properly for the service. It's one of the things you gotta do on the website. Once I did that, it works.

Too bad, it's still transcoding from the PC, hence, a some quality drop.

woot woot... streaming movies to my 360 is awesome... only thing now is must get better speakers for my tv... lol...

important websites and info for setting up media center

Xbox Setup

Transcode 360
Allows you to watch almost any file on the 360 *cannot run rmvb*

Other relevant info

If you want to use MCE,
YOU MUST HAVE ROLLUP UPDATE 2

If you want to use Vista you don't really need any updates vista supports the 360 as an media extender, but the instructions are on
Xbox Setup

To run transcode 360, if you have 2 pcs and your media is on 2 different pcs and you want the transcode software to transcode for both.

Then when you install hit manual (not automatic)
and follow these instructions

Also you can forward the transcoding operation to another pc i.e your main pc won't lag if you're watch movies on the 360 to do this

Open the transcode software in the tray go to network and input the name in space, test and see if it works.

I hope this helps.

It looks pretty much like the standard MC screen for Windows.

The Vista version looks slightly better. Vista's a bit too sluggish for me, so now I'm back on XP. I use TVersity now. Not that popular around here I guess. smile.gif

Warning. The new cumulative MC patch for vista, crashes Xbox MCE. I thought my Xbox is dying as there were graphics corruption all over the place whenever I go into Media Center. Had to uninstall the patch to get everything back to normal again.

The cumulative patch works just fine here. Too bad the current MCE has less features compared to what they've released with the last Spring Update. Any news whether there will be an update?

normal win xp is not the same as win xp mce. you need to have windows xp media center edition 2005 (win xp mce). so if you only running normal win xp in your pc then you only can use the media connect with your 360. you need to install win xp mce2005 as your operating system before you can use media center in the 360.
*
Forgive me for my nooB question, but is there a significant difference if I choose to use media connect with my current XP instead of dual booting with xp mce ?

cheers

Zune's the best choice for Microsoft based solution at the moment because mp4, mov and such will be displayed as well.

You do not need to transfer. Just add all the folders you want listed from Zune player. Click on Options | Add Folder to Library. Or, you can just press F3 and the dialog will appear.
