QUOTE(kl98 @ Nov 30 2013, 04:16 PM)
I just test drove it today. I was under the impression that the downshift happens instantaneously, but in fact it is quite a smooth transition that happens only when the car has slowed down enough to sensibly shift in to the gear which makes a whole lot more sense. So one can actually think of S-Mode as manual on the way up, and D on the way down.

I can also confirm that there is no jerking/grinding of the sort that's been going around the forums especially concerning the early American models. Looks like the latest TSBs have been effective in addressing the problem, which is very reassuring. This implies that it is purely a software issue, not a hardware issue. Having said that, I did experience some ever so slight vibrations on the downshift from 3 to 2 and again from 2 to 1, which is understandable given that it really is a manual at heart. Sure, it's no DSG, but definitely something I can live with nonetheless, especially when taking in to account the difference in price. The drawbacks are very minimal when put up against the DSG.

One unexpected "glitch" I did experience was the vibration during idle. It took me a while to realize that that was due to the idle revs not being tuned high enough. Again, just like the initial software programming, this was no doubt meant as a fuel saving measure and easily rectifiable (albeit at the expense of greater fuel consumption)

For me at least, it now all comes down to fuel consumption. Is any one getting figures in the mid to high teens at all? Less than 10 seems quite appalling.
*
Today i finally hit my 1000km on my odometer biggrin.gif No juddering symptoms rclxms.gif As for FC, i am in my 3rd tank now, getting 9.8L/100KM on the display which translate to about 10.2km per liter hmm.gif which is nowhere near the figures stated in the brochures:

Fuel Consumption (litres/100 kms)
• Urban 9.4
• Extra Urban 5.1
• Combined 6.6

I am driving with D all the time, no sudden acceleration. I consider my daily journey 40 city:60 highway.

Wow... that is good FC, which translate to about 12.82KM/L. I noticed my tires are over inflated 35 psi and i lowered it back to 31 psi as per guide line at the driver door side (single driver with a toddler most of the time). Now FC dropped to 9.9L/100KM cry.gif

Maybe the FC improves with more mileage done? Can anyone confirm abt this?

Try running on Cruise Control - definitely helped many members improve their FC. Not that it's a miracle function but more like it function's miraculously since most of us are heavy-footed / kaki accelerator & this function allows just enough fuel to achieve the desired speed.

I've been getting a consistent mileage of 600km per week, per full tank. Translates to about 8.2-8.4l/100km - 55% city (KL/PJ) & 45% Hway.

Previously, my personal best was two & fro KL-Penang, which was one full tank and FC was ~ 6l/100km without Cruise Control. Other's have even achieved up to 1000km in a single tank - so it's heavily dependent on driving conditions and style.

Yesterday I let my friend test drive the Focus in the city. Even in city drives he was impressed by the power and acceleration of the Focus. He said it behaves like a rocket when he stepped on the pedal to overtake vehicles. Oh well, no surprise there. :-)
*
Really? I still feel my Vios is more "agile" from 0-60km/h compared to the Focus, maybe I'm not so used to press hard on the acceleration pedal cause I really hates the jerks (which usually happens when you sudden increase force on the pedal), I prefer to let it increase speed smoothly, 60-140km/h (fastest so far I'd tried thou my mileage was below 500KM that time, lol) definitely beat Vios down.

I wish it'll get improve over mileage, for the so call engine "run-in" period.

To all Focus owner out there, would like to ask some question about our beloved vehicle:

1) I noticed the blower (fan) are not consistent, sometimes it will get stronger suddenly and back to normal in few seconds time, especially notice able when you're put the blower stronger (level 3-4 and above), but thanks to my sensitive ears, I notice it even in level 1...

2) The auto rain wipers, as it's raining season now in Malaysia, I leave the wiper as auto these few days, and I noticed that after I stopped the engine, went for lunch, and came back (still raining), the auto wiper doesn't auto any more, I got to turn the auto "off" and turn it back "on" so it'll work again..

** just tested from lunch moment ago, this time it's working, perhaps it was an one time issue...touch wood.

3) The grinding sounds are getting more obvious now especially going up hill, and because I stay on top of the hill, I got to hear this grinding sounds everyday even when I'm in the cabin >.<"

4) Our car is quite easily get dusted especially on those high gloss area like our car pillars, etc. Any solution to it? Coating will helps?

5) Our car seats have no neck support, and it's quite tiring after a long drive (stuck in traffic jam all the way from Melaka to KL yesterday almost 4 hours)

Other than that, I'm still loving my car every bits, can't stop admiring my car everyday tongue.gif

My first tank I got 13.6l/100km shocking.gif , as I was stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for nearly 80% of the tank (UMNO general assembly going on at that time vmad.gif vmad.gif ). Now after 10000km, I average 10.58l/100km (overall from Day1) ranging from 9.2 to 11.2, with approx 70% city rush-hour traffic.

I find that slow acceleration does NOT help in improving FC; however accelerating then hard braking does make the FC worse. As such, now I just tekan the gas to the max comfort (and enjoyment!) level whenever I can estimate that I don't have to slam the brake.

Overall, I must say the FC is much worse than as advertised, though not unreasonable for a 2L car.

Thats pretty normal. My average FC is 12.5L/100km. 80% city:20 highway. FC only improved if you are the highway, cant hit about 9.0L/100km.

As some brudders suggested earlier, try shifting your gear to S mode when you are in stuck in jams.. it does help to improve FC a bit..

my car battery died again. is the 3rd time since got my car in 08/13. really frustrating.

car parked in porch on friday and forgot to lock it. did not drive it over the weekend and yesterday couldn't start. called insurer auto assist and manage to jump start. i suspect some electronics stuff is draining the battery out even after the engine is being turned off.

1st time is during tinting installation. is embarrassing that it happen on the first week i the car and just few hours (tinting time) it takes to drain the battery

2nd time was 2 months back. this time towed to the service center to have the battery recharged

3rd time was yesterday

read earlier post that some of you doesn't have such problem. maybe you guys try not to lock the car for maybe 4-5hours and try start the engine afterwards. observe whether the start up is as smooth as it use to be.

When I was doing 1st service, the SC take the battery level print out. Maybe ford know about battery problem.. I do leave the car unlock sometime overnight a few time.. But never encounter the problem starting the car. Do you drive short distance?

choowh,

Very sad & concerned to hear about your problem.... in fact, of all the complaints about our ride (albeit not many), this is the one that bothers me the most.

I leave my car unlocked many/most times throughout the night...8-12 hours each day; so far no problems.

Do you have any peripherals attached, eg. cigarette lighter adaptors, dashcams, etc.? The problem with our car is that the cigarette lighter port remains powered up even though the engine is off (in fact I think it's even on when the car is locked!).

As for the rocket comment, that's not from me. I haven't driven the Toyota Vios before so cannot comment on the agility of it in 0-60km/h acceleration versus the Ford Focus. But the Focus feels quite agile (to me) already with the instant pedal response or reaction ie. no lag when you press on the pedal. Coupled by the acceleration power, the agility or drivability is good when compared to vehicles with a pedal lag or vehicles which have lower acceleration power.

1) Yes, blower speed is not very consistent, but I don't feel it too much since the speed is always at level 1 or 2 in my vehicle, rarely 3 or 4 since at those levels the noise from the blower is louder in the cabin. I try to limit the blower speed to 2, most of the time 1 since it is quietest at 1. I like a quiet cabin.

2) Can't comment on the auto wipers since mine is the low-spec non + model.

3) Can't comment too on the grinding sound as my vehicle rarely goes uphill, though I can relate to your experience, only once.

4) Yes, quite a dust magnet. No comment too.

5) I have got used to dirivng without neck support even on long journeys. Driven from KL to JB to Singapore, then to KL back wtihout much issues. Guess this is more to individual preferences. Aftermarket neck supports available at accessory shops I presume.

hi guys, heard from a friend that owns a titanium plus, that his engine vibrates intermittently at idle. It vibrates, then stop awhile, then vibrate again. Brought back to SA, they said its like that (engine's characteristics). Anyone else experience this?

oh, so it was a known issue about the inconsistent blower speed, no one actually went and complaint? I'll check with the SC when I go for first service, which I think will be next 3-4 months tongue.gif

Yes, I can feel it in the Titanium non-plus but a caveat. The engine vibration at idle (N gear) is very minimal. My vehicle is still below 4,000km in mileage. Perhaps older vehicles with over 10,000km clocked the vibration may be more prominent, ie. stronger.

This is one reason why I mentioned my previous vehicle that replaced the Focus, the Nissan Sylphy is quieter. Make no mistake. The Focus is also quiet with minimal engine vibration. Only when compared to the Sylphy, the Focus lost slightly in quietness or NVH levels.

basically every car would vibrates when it's idle, my first ride, a 13 years old Honda City, vibrates as I'm riding a horse when it's idling at traffic lights, even the steering are vibrating along, lol.

My last ride before Focus, the second gen Vios, doesn't vibrate much, only can feel it when I put my hand on the passenger seat, as for Focus, it's NVH is so good that I hardly feel any vibration in the cabin, even when I'm driving on high speed above 110km/h, the car still very stable and hardly feel any vibrates thumbup.gif
