MPC-HC will only work if the video stream complies with DVXA standards, otherwise it will revert back to (intensive) software decoding. And I have tried on many systems and I can tell you that with 1080p MKV you'll need a fast processor as many of the players I've tried does not use GPU acceleration at all (should be due to the way MKV demultiplexor handles the codec part). wink.gif
*
What you said is true, though the actual reason why you can't do DXVA with mkv is due to encoding in video stream itself, which needs to be compliant to DXVA standards and requires the same codec using DXVA to handle the subtitle stream as well. Reason? I think you'll have to ask the MPC-HC author.

I don't have an actual system yet to try this out(gimme a week or two), but if I can't use DXVA, the video won't play at all, not revert to a software decoder, but that's probably due to my settings. It's more towards troubleshooting.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry20978762

Have you tried those settings? Easier yet, just install k-lite codec pack(of course, please uninstall all your other codecs first unless you know what you are doing) and choose graphic card acceleration.

Hey blindbox, i tried ur settings with MPC-HC for the DXVA thingy.

My Specs:
E4500(@2.88Ghz)
4GB RAM Kingston Value RAM (PC800)
Sapphire ATI 4850 512MB
Gigabyte EP35-DS3
Vista SP1 32-bit

Test 1:
Transformer 1080p
DXVA off:
Cpu Usage: average about 20%, spiking to 30% occassionaly
DXVA on:
CPU usage: < 10%, average around 4% to 7%

Test 2:
Wall-E 1080p:

DXVA off
Cpu Usage: average around 35%
DXVA on:
Cpu Usage: average around 4% (lots of time going down to 2%!)

Conclusion: ATI 4850 rocks!!!! smile.gif

Anyway, it's not a big concern for me, either way, it plays smoothly, that's what's important. But i suppose it'll be useful for people who wants to encode a video file(or some other CPU intensive task) and watch movie at same time....save the CPU for the encoding while the movie use the DXVA.

I have been long time never survey the mobo market..
Now which mobo is best for use with HTPC? Intel or AMD platform also okie..

Most important is the integrated graphic which best to decode HD video at the moment.

Any Radeon HD 3xxx, Radeon HD 4xxx IGP or discrete, Geforce 8xxx, Geforce 9xxx, Geforce GTX2xx series will do. It doesn't matter if they are IGP or discrete. I'm not sure about intel's latest chipset and Radoen HD 2xxx series though. One thing I'm sure of is Radeon HD2900 doesn't support DXVA. Try the DXVA checker found here. http://bluesky23.hp.infoseek.co.jp/

If you manage to get H.264 from the software then it works for h.264.. and the same goes to the other formats it will show.

Check with your display drivers. I see that you use an ATi card there. http://www.guru3d.com/article/his-radeon-4...-turbo-review/4

Dynamic Contrast Enhancement. That should be responsible.

lots of people have this problem. The solution is almost always: a) use a more efficient decoder (read: coreavc) & b) get a faster CPU.

You've been repeating the same thing like a broken record. We know that already. A bogged down windows also helps in killing your video performance(a change from vista to xp completely removes the stutter problem away). Anyway, does DXVA work on your end with the guide I gave you?

Honestly, only about 10% of the problems at that forum got fixed, and that's because they're fixable software-wise, which is mostly due to the user not being smart enough.

Another thing to add, anyone tried the multithreaded ffdshow yet?

I tried those many (many) moons ago, same thing.. does not work with GPU acceleration. Cards tested.. 8600GT, 8800GT, HD2600XT, etc.. etc.. tongue.gif

Too bad for you then, it works for others, though I hope your settings were the same with mine.

MKV playback does not work with GPU acceleration.. period! rolleyes.gif I need at least a E6600 (with slight overclock) and X2 5400+ to get it running properly and (almost) very smoothly. Whatever settings you've mentioned, it comes back to the processor again. Video lag is a very good indicator (sound comes first, not in sync with picture).. And re-encoding the video to MP4, WMV and AVI just to use GPU accelerated players is not something I would like to waste a lot of time with. wink.gif

lex: Tried this before? http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...lease_id=523000 It's a multithreaded ffdshow. Not needed if you use CoreAVC Professional edition(which supports SMP)

yeap ....... Vista MCE (Home premium ) is more superior to XP MCE 2005

the GUI is more detail and expressive, forget about XP MCE 2006 just an ordinary XP afterall w/o the MCE loader screen

just assembled a HTPC
KA790GX chipset
AMD quad Core 9550 CPU
2gb DDR 2 PC800 Ram ( just ordered another 2GB ram ) hehe!!!
c/w build in ATI Radeon 3300 chipset with Hybrid crossFire X
HDD hmm...!!! 20 and 30GB IDE HDD ( poor guy just a mouse in a church House) sharing the sata 400GB with my Divico
Liteon 20X Lightscribe DVD burner
e-view casing, Logitech EX 100 wireless kb/mouse set

looks like the HTPC ATI really performs well, plays mkv files jerk free unlike the divico 4000 with noticeable jerk trails even on VOB,AVi (my divico cant play MKV's)

Audio wise the Divico is superb running on coaxial as compared to HTPC's built in 7.1

Divico performs a fullscreen format on my 50ins LCD unlike the HTPC ATI even on whatever modes i use, its not borderless (hmm... i like this word)

any one can enlighting me on the setting to display a bordeless
