dts, dts-es, dolby, dolby-ex, AC3 are previous generation lossy standard.  though SPDIF that normally available in most sound card and onboard mb too.
the SPDIF standard only carry Stereo 2ch on transport, however the Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect design specially for PC platform are enable it to carry multi-channel DVD-source via SPDIF encode then to your avr to decode it...no problem. but as stated DVD-source meant 5.1channel only but not 7.1channel for sure.

now blu-ray and hd around. current lossless standard playing are Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD.
for HTPC kaki have problem on that. I'm the 1 of it headache on that. Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD using high bandwith as loseless standard using.
SPDIF definitely not capable but only HDMI. furthermore DHCP protection too...

but HDMI sound card not hot in market here yet, I already check this new arrival still expensive or coming soon only....
if you willing to buy from ebay and ship from oversea still very costly!!!!

1. http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=25&l2...355&modelmenu=1
2. http://www.auzentech.com/site/products/x-f...etheater_hd.php

my HTPC already build...changing mb to build in HDMI port is not the best solution for me. hopefully those HDMI sound card quickly have mature market here with affortable price.... or any better idea suggest and sharing????

use a current generation ATI based Video card (cheap 200-300 can get already).. got built in 7.1 audio chip to merge with the Video HDMI or opt for "pass thro" function for amp to decode the HD audio..

All the ATI Series 4000 should be able to. I'm using 4850 to pass HDMI sound to my LCD TV.

Would like your advice on the following: I have a Asus F8Vr notebook that has hdmi port for video and sound which I connect to my HDTV. However my AV amp does not support HDMI and I understand that the SPDIF cum headphone port can be used to output audio to the AV amp. I can only find RCA cables to connect from SPDIF to my AV and as such can only get analogue. Is there a cable that I can get to get connected to my AV amp coaxial or optical to get digital dolby srround or dts?

thanks for sharing Matrix.
meant starting most of from ATi 4000 series are build in sound card?
Matrix, just confirm from you before I go and buy another next graphic card.

so your computer sound default are set to 4850??? not on sound card or onboard audio rite?
if confirm 4850 are independent for sound processing, no rely on other sound card, then I will grab it soon.....

hi everyone....

need some advise on upgrade graphic card. the main reason are the dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD.
I already conclude for myself that all current sound card only offer though SPDIF optical/coax or SPDIF convert to HDMI that only support DDL & DTS-Connect only.
except expensive Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 or coming soon Auzentech X-FI Home Theater HD (must be expensive too when launch)

somehow, ATI latest generation Series 4xxx already come with solution with integrated 7.1 Audio support various audio format.
I check some of manufacture spec such as HIS, Sapphire, etc....
but very less information on their website or pdf manual download. I need to know which card support which standard.
So, I check the AMD ATi official website, there is several range of series support different type of audio format. thanks god more info from AMD ATi.

here is the distro: generally are:

4600 Series:
PCM, AC-3, AAC, and DTS

4830:
AC-3, AAC, DTS (Subject to digital rights management limitations; maximum supported audio stream bandwidth is 6.144 Mbps)

4850 & 4870:
AC-3, AAC, DTS, DTS-HD & Dolby True-HD (Subject to digital rights management limitations; maximum supported audio stream bandwidth is 6.144 Mbps)

but somehow the actual card that if we purchase final spec still need to refer the manufacture. so I hope any 4xxx graphic card owner can help on feedback which 1 u own and what is the audio format support on the sound chip. if can upload the manual pdf from the CD bundled are much appreciate!!!

many thanks..... notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

yes something like that, you need to install the realtek HD driver and can use the video card's sound chip

oh...yes, you're right. what I meant is though the DVI-to-HDMI adapter.

so my question is, when we plug the adapter. is both port have carry sound or only 1, only both port can transfer simultaneously ????

pls share with me hows your card design, thx.....

I wouldn't know didn't test this option.. besides they only give you one dongle (if the vid card has 2 DVI) and don't give you any dongle if your video card has HDMI + DVI..so how to test 2 HDMI outputs??

cannot use this kind of dongle you posted, these are for DVI to HDMI video only..
ATIs version is DVI (from their video card) to HDMI Video/Audio..

oh.... 4670. great!
according to AMD ATi website... this is the next thing I concern:

4600 Series:
PCM, AC-3, AAC, and DTS

4830:
AC-3, AAC, DTS (Subject to digital rights management limitations; maximum supported audio stream bandwidth is 6.144 Mbps)

4850 & 4870:
AC-3, AAC, DTS, DTS-HD & Dolby True-HD (Subject to digital rights management limitations; maximum supported audio stream bandwidth is 6.144 Mbps)

is your card support which format? is your avr detect the format you want?
