Why want to flash with 3rd party firmware ? Isnt it best using the manufacturers firmware ?

Also, Im planning to get WRT54G Ver 5, as version 4 currently no more in production. I manage to find a someone who is still selling Version 4 but then came to understand that linksys does not provide any warranty for it anymore.

SO my question here is that can I flash/mod my firmware with DD-WRT if I get WRT54G V 5 ?

Yes you could !
Linksys' firmware sucks , to be honest with you. It just 'sucks' , not ideal for 'torrent freaks' or someone wants his/her router to be the best router ever for 1/4 of the price !

rattan, Instead of buying WRT54G ver 5 why not go for WRT54GL (RM200 ~ 250) have more memory & easier to upgrade with 3rd party firmware.

Ok got myself into deep SXXX after flashing my Linksys WRT54G V5 with the DD-WRT firmware. Follow the intruction like this:

http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G5%5FCFE

1) First i press the reset button at the back for 30sec. This step does not include in the guide, but i read it from this forum.

2) After reset, open the router's web GUI, i see only "Management Mode" which only allow me to flash firmware. So the first file that i flash is the "vxworks_prep_v03.bin". I waited for a half minute and the GUI said "Success". So i turn off/on the router.

3) Then this time i flash with "vxworks_killer_g_v06.bin", and this time the flashing is fast about 10sec. When i saw the word "Sucess" i power cycle the router again.

4) This time after power on, my router power led keep blinking, the port 1 ( Which i am currently connected ) is stable without blinking. But the problem is i cant access the router WEB GUI page any more. I tried using explorer and Maxthon to no success.

I havent even start to flash the third files "dd-wrt.v23_micro_generic.bin" so i really dont know whats wrong. I read the troubleshoot and they mentioned change my IP to 192.168.1.99 and the gateway is the same 192.168.1.1. And change my adapter speed to 10MB Half Duplex, did but still no luck. Below is what i did to try solve the problem.

1) Restart and reset the modem. No

2) Restart my PC. No

3) ipconfig shows that the gateway is 192.168.1.1 & my ip is correct too. When ping its shows that the router reply my ping 1ms. So ip address no problem.

4) Change to dynamic ip. No ping reply at all.

I am curious if i really need to flash the first 2 files. Since it had never been mentioned in the forum at all. Or all need to do is just flash the "dd-wrt.v23_micro_generic.bin" only. And then do i need to flash to the standard version?

And is my router "Kong"? If so do i need to flash back to the Linksys official firmware, or directly to the "dd-wrt.v23_micro_generic.bin" ans since i cant access my GUI page, perhaps i will need to use TFTP, which i have no idea how to use it. But if someone can guide me through, i think i can do it.

Million thanks...

Flash to the "dd-wrt.v23_micro_generic.bin"? And do i need to flash the standard version
"dd-wrt.v23_wrt54g.bin " which is 3.3MB or this one "dd-wrt.v23_sp2_standard.zip" which 20MB? And is it ok to use a program call TFTP2.exe?

Thanks...

Ok, successfully flash to the "dd-wrt.v23_micro_generic.bin". Now confused with some setting. Guess have to do some digging.

Edited:
Sorry 1 more question, i am running Zone Alarm with XP Service Pack 1. It use to block hundreds of access a day before i got this router and still running on bridge mode with my ZTE modem. But since i started using this router, Zone Alarm wouldnt block any access due to the router mode. I disable the firewall in WRT54G thinking of reducing the load from it. But even after disable it, my Zone Alarm still wouldnt block anything. i am wondering if my PC is open for any kind of attact like trojan or virus. Please advice...

I just use XP's bulit-in firewall , of course I did shut the router's firewall off as it takes soo much of load and it hogs RAM plus it blocks IPV6 Connections. For me , I just use standard firewall , it does the job. even if someone managed to hack my connection , he/she would only see my router and not my computers...So I dont really care

Got it. But let say i want to disable DHCP server and running on static ip on both of my PC which is what i am doing now. But when ever i disable DHCP, i cant log into sytreamyx because the streamyx ip 202.188.0.133 will be grey out if i do that and i will not be able to log in.

So perhaps there are some setting like "Use DNSasq DHCP/DNS" or "DHCP-Authoritative" that i should play with.

Thanks again.

how does dd-wrt calculates its memory??

Total Available 13.8 MB / 16.0 MB

Free 2.6 MB / 13.8 MB

Used 11.2 MB / 13.8 MB

Buffers 1.4 MB / 11.2 MB

Cached 4.4 MB / 11.2 MB

Active 3.2 MB / 11.2 MB

Inactive 2.6 MB / 11.2 MB

====================

my router has 16mb ram, but how come it has 13.8 available.. and out of this 2.6mb is free.

and what happens to the portion sitting from 13.9 to 16mb??

please advice on the terms used like buffers, cached, active,inactive..

The remaining portion is used to accommodate the firmware if I'm not mistaken

Yes you are right. The WRT54GL is a WRT54G v4 actually but they renamed it as WRT54GL where the letter 'L' stands for Linux.

Ok u are using WRT54G V5 right? If yes then u have no choice but to stick to all micro version in the future, because the V5 has limited memory to accomodate mico version. Dont try to use the standard version as it may brick your router. If u are using GS V5 and above, u can still unlock the other 8MB momory before u flash to mini or may be standard version. Google around to see how to free the other 8MB. Good luck...

wilson88, if u r upgrading from a DD-WRT from GUI, juz use the generic version, do a reset b4 upgrading, i did nearly mess up my upgrade when i forget to reset last time... but some ppl din hav any problem upgrading without reset as well... it all depends...
otherwise, if u r using tftp, use the wrtg54g/gs version...
that's the diff from what i know...
