Hi there,, thank you all for this thread.. its been so informative and fun reading through some of the advice and comments posted here..smile.gif

However, I've gone through almost every page on this thread but I have not come across anyone with a similar situation to mine..
I hope someone can give me some advice on what i should do next..

I'm originally from Iraq(middle east) but now I live and study In the UK permanently (My family emigrated here about 7 years ago just after the war)..
I'm 34 years old now and just about to finish a degree in Civil engineering from a top UK university.... I know 34 is a bit old to finish a degree but its just the way things worked out for me..

I'm now seriously considering applying to do a masters in Petroleum engineering either in Aberdeen or HariotWatt universities (both in Scotland), hoping a masters degree will help negate the fact of my age and help me secure an eventual job in the oil&gas industry...

My question;
is it too late for me at the age of 34 to even consider the OnG sector? Will it be difficult to convince recruiters to hire someone at my age and to put them on their training schemes?..

Beware with 2H Offshore!!
1) Dun be blinded by the salary offered. They dun have bonus. Some of them only got the bonus by threatening the boss by resigning. If they tell u dat there's bonus, ask them to write in your contract.
2) The Indian boss is a bloody *******. My frens over there hates him. He is a typical India-Indian. Remember, Indian is deadlier than Snake.
3) They will try to station you in UK with minimal allowance (10 to 15 pounds per day) as cheap labour.
4) They hv no extra benefit except 2k medical/yr, the lowest insurance coverage, they will sure to stress that they hv 20 days leave per year and parking allowance
5) Most employees r in low moral due to the communist style leadership

The only reason you should consider there is if you could not find another.

Overall the master's i've seen here that are really bad are local trade licensed. Which makes me wonder WTF the marine dept is doing, churning out tickets to people like that.

As for the sea time 24 months WAS the required time for Foreign Going license for the Singapore Marine Dept. And it used to be the same for Malaysian marine Dept as well but during my final few months on board I heard that they shortened it to 20 month sea time, and I guess now i'ts even worse! only 12 months! >< nobody will learn much in 12 months seriously, I was on board Container vessels and tankers, and I had a chance to sail on one 30 yr old container vessel and a massive 5,400 TEU container vessel, Oh plus I was also on a VLCC! and managed to go alongside a ULCC and maan it was HUGE!!!! All this I did while sailing as a cadet. SO 12 months? really not enough time to experience all one can experience as during cadet time is our honey moon time! lolx

Noiseemunkee,

I used to work with 2H. I do agree wt kiyaykh. In addition, 2H hv this regional boss, Sporean shortie, Mr Frankie. This guy is equally a pain in the ass.
The starting pay is RM2600 (could be higher if they like you, it's small company, they dont have a fixed salary structure)

Nevertheless, as wat pandikar said, you have nothing to lose. Jz go for both interview and compare the salary (yearly salary in order to compare 'apple to apple' since Ranhill Worley has OT & contractual bonus while 2H is doesnt)
Nx you consider the work scope. Ranhill Worley scope of work is wider as they involved in consultancy for a wide range of O&G engineering while 2H only on riser. Not sure what they r offering to you. This you need to find out in your interview.
Then, this leaves you to job prospect - Ranhill Worley deals mostly with end client like Exxon Mobil, Shell...etc. while 2H only deals with contractors like FMC, GL..etc. So, working wt RW gives u a better opportunity to get into end client side in the future.
Last, of course the environment.

Good luck to u!

Hi guys, I am recent graduate in mechanical engineering...So far, I haven't seen much O&G jobs posted online. What I have been applying was semicon industry because it has so many job ads. I took courses in material sciences hope this helps. Wonder if anybody can pull some strings.

hi tking,

Are you working abroad now?

It's true that 2h specializes only in riser engineering but i think the things they do are pretty specialize. Things like SCRs, tendon risers are the way forward as the industry moves into deeper waters...hence, i think a few years of experience in these areas might even land you a job abroad...

haha. yup3. some malaysian that i meet in my company are very good. but their ticket not from malaysia.

i believe that they reduced the seatime required because lack of senior officers. but this will also make the quality worse. in some country, they've to undergo class 2, sail for some time then take class 1. in malaysia it is combined class2 and class 1. that's why i believe make the current officer suck. they're still young and lack of experience and competency.

btw, what is ur position now in OnG?
