QUOTE(darkddly @ Mar 15 2010, 10:41 AM) Planning to do Mining Engineering but just wanted to know, is the job availability in Malaysia high? Very limited jobs in Malaysia. You have to work overseas cause most of the big mines and upcoming ones are found overseas anyway e.g South Americas, Australia and etc. Where are you planning to study mining engineering? In Australia the demand for mining engineers are strong and 2 of the biggest mining companies BHP and Rio Tinto have HQ in Australia. |

But of course both resources are inter connected. Thanks for the info anyway. Still can't make up my mind whether to take courses related to O&G Petroleum engineering is already a specific job but for mining the modus operation is the same only the type of exploitation that differs. Btw BHP also have a petroleum business albeit they prefer to joint venture with other operators such as Exxon and Shell. If you still in doubt then i suggest you take civil, chemical or mechanical, at least these jobs especially mechanical a lot of jobs prospects in many industries. |

I'm not sure if anyone's asked this before, but I'm pretty sure it has been touched. I recently graduated with a Degree in Chemical Engineering and landed by first job as a QA Engineer at a Japanese manufacturing company (which produces epoxy molding compound), which does require some chemical knowledge, but my job will be mostly investigating customer issues and using SPC methods.
If I were to decide to switch companies a year later, do you think it would be possible to land a job at an O&G field given my 1 year experience in a non-related field? Is the field-related experience important, or is it just the working experience important? Is is possible to get into the company as a 'graduate' considering that I have not worked for a proper O&G firm before this? Thank you guys and hope for a swift reply. |

Well a lot of O&G workers today also don't have the much needed oilfield background when they first join an oilfield company. I myself started out as a sheet metal engineer. Does it sound O&G to you?
True enough, if you have a few years of work experience in oilfield industry under your belt, it will be a huge advantage but that doesnt necessary guarantee you the job. At the end of the day, it is how well you perform in the assessment/ interview session. As an advise, look for positions that doesnt require 5 & 10 yrs of work experience of the same field. If the position requires 1-2 years of work experience, then you may take a shot at it. Alternatively, you can go take the graduate training program route, as offered by a lot of oilfield companies eg Shell, Schlumberger, Exxon Mobil or even Petronas. Downside is, there's a lot of competition involved considering thousands of candidates apply to them every year.. Good LUck. |
