just done watching Dune re-reun in velocity, surprised they changed couple sitting to single seating while allows me to move furthur back since it is too wide for my eye if i were to sit dead center.

Did not realized they have upgrade the audio side, perhaps I does not have sharp ears but i can feel the rumble on the Dune 2 sneak peak section when he was riding the sand worm.

Glad that i finally able to watch dune in imax cos I was watching it onboard plane.

Just i find that the blue light show seat row and numbers were very annoying since it is quite bright when the cinema is fully darkend.

was interested originally but decided against it since it was showing at 1Utama. If they did one at Velocity I would've snapped a ticket up so quick lol

(1Utama is pretty far from me, and the screen don't support the tall IMAX format like Velocity does. not to mention Velocity being only 15 minutes away lol)

So, which is the best IMAX theater now? I would definitely like to experience Dune 2 in a taller format than the usual cinescope. Since even watching at home on the Blu-ray is just cinescope and not even the 16:9.

haha kamon la if velocity is only 15mins away then 1U is not that far, at least for me anyway since im used to driving from KL to PJ. can take the MRT somemore. plus youre gonna be there at least for 5 hours i think its worth it. but all this talks is useless now i think. last i check the tickets for marathon is selling very fast. almost sold out unless you like the shit seats

So I should consider either 1U or Velocity? Which one of these has bigger screen? Btw, these are all the 1.8:1 screen?

Both 1U and Velocity has laser, but Velocity has the biggest IMAX screen in Malaysia.

Basically Velocity > 1Utama. For more details on this recommendation, see this post by sifu @Katharsis

Personally, I'd say just go whichever closer since the difference in screen size not that big haha

Check out post 711 in page 36 for full details but tldr Velocity is bigger with a 1.43:1 screen, but is single laser and can't display above 1.9:1. 1U's screen is 1.9:1 (actually slightly taller) so the whole screen will be filled during 1.9:1 scenes, but it is smaller in terms of overall image display size vs Velocity, still big tho.

Preference comes down to your tolerance of letterboxing/greyish bars at the top and bottom of the screen

Don't diss 1U IMAX bro. I remember my time having to take 1 hour 20 min-ish trip to 1U to get a good IMAX experience because Velocity's hall had that twin seat bs.

I would take 1U for wide aspect ratio films over Velocity honestly, since wide AR films only display like 1/3 of the screen there. However, Pav BJ opened, I prefer going there over 1U mainly due to distance, but have to drive la vs 1U easy yet long mrt ride

Honestly, with the main hall priorities here being IMAX, I hope we get to see more Dolby stuff coming out. Dolby cinema with Dolby Vision and Atmos would be gladly welcomed in my eyes but considering even some first world countries have not gotten Dolby Cinema... Well, a Malaysian can only hope.

Considering TGV has gotten into the Dolby Atmos game (only one in Pav BJ though), maybe they could also bring in Dolby Cinema. TGV has been doing a lot of right imo over GSC lately and this will seal the deal for high quality cinema halls option.

Thank you both!

So in summary, Velocity has the largest screen but it is a 1.9:1 on a 1.43:1 screen. My question would be... would the Velocity's 1.9:1 (image only) is bigger than 1U's screen?

PS, I'm coming from Melaka so both would be fine laugh.gif

Yes, because Velocity's screen is both wider and taller than 1U's (source here, thanks @katharsis):

So even when you take into account just the 1.9 part of Velocity's screen, you get a bigger image than on 1U's screen (source here, thanks @ericling):

I'm nearer to JB but no more Xenon IMAX for me. I'd rather go to KL or just watch normal or Infinity @ Toppen.

cmon GSC upgrade Southkey to Laser pls

They can change the projectors, sound systems, and seating configurations, but I don't think they can make the screen bigger since that depends on the physical hall size haha

for what it's worth, i've been to Velocity before and after the upgrade and the screen size looked the same to me

Not interested in crossing the other side? haha heard SG got some decent IMAX cinemas hell a lot shorter than driving to go KL.
