was a regular imax viewer with sunway velocity but with oppenheimer i choose to try imax laser at ioi for second viewing. damn i have to say its a lot better, the imagine quality just stomped all over tgv. you never really realised how a bit blurry the xenon projector until you watch how clear the laser is. sure, velocity still had way bigger screen and superb immersive experience, but i found the image quality a bit lacking at times. but for audio the sunway velocity is a bit better, you can feel the feet thumping during oppenheimer's speech a bit shakier.

after this with Dune 2 i will definitely traveling to IOI which is sucks since velocity is nearer to my house. hoping TGV bukit jalil offers imax laser next, would be very dissapointing if they still used the old xenon projector, doesnt matter how big the screen is.

Ok wow!
Dolby Atmos is really amazing.
Just watched Meg 2: The Trench at TGV Cinemas Pavilion Bukit Jalil and the surround sound seems more powerful than IMAX With Laser surround sound.
Which is really impressive for me.
And the halls is just so beautiful and really comfy.
The seats is a glide which is really comfortable to sit vs GSC IMAX With Laser halls.
😅😅😅
After thinking about this, why should I waste money for IMAX but I can get a better all around experience with TGV Dolby Atmos halls at TGV Pavilion BJ.
Maybe next I will try GSC BIG at Lalaport BBCC to give an overall review.

how big the dolby screen? its just better audio right with normal size screen right?. we dont have the full fat dolby cinema experience yet in malaysia

I would recommend IMAX for Oppenheimer mainly because only IMAX will display those tall and different aspect ratios of the movie. Big and other halls will only display the film in 2.39:1, a wide aspect ratio. Audio-wise, you will get the same experience of IMAX with Dolby with Oppenheimer's case because Nolan's audio choice of this film is IMAX 5.1 instead of 7.1, basically won't have full 360 degree surround imaging so Dolby won't offer a better audio experience.

Tldr, you will get the same audio experience in Dolby vs IMAX for Oppenheimer, that and IMAX will have taller aspect ratio movie shown.

ive already did, with xenon and laser thumbup.gif thats why i wanna try the gsc big next so i can direct comparison, but that ship has sailed hahaha. was thinking of trying Onyx too, but its too expensive for me at rm28 so no deal, its more expensive than gsc big, might as well pony up a bit more for imax if thats the case.

bad experience for me watching interstellar on BIG Tropicana Gardens. the aspect ratio is not suitable, the big black bars is very apparent. BIG reportedly equipped with 4k laser projector but from the image quality its doesnt appear to be at that resolution. maybe the digital source they got is just 2k but projected in a big screen?? resulting subpar image quality. watched imax laser recently for oppenheimer and the image quality is leagues ahead, it was stunning. the only positive things i can say for that experience is that the screen size is massive and the pricing isnt too bad which was rm22. was very excited for the dark knight next month, but from that experience maybe i just watched it on standard hall.

QUOTE(ericling @ Sep 26 2023, 09:15 AM)

Only downside I can say is the seats isn't very comfortable (less cushion and no recliner), and the hall is FREEZING COLD, so do bring your thick jacket (my thin jacket wasnt enough)!

i have to agree with this, although the leather was nice, the lack of cushion and very hard armrest really sticks out. for premium experience you'd thought GSC would provide better seats.

the admin also teased about something bigger when someone asked about the aspect ratio https://twitter.com/TGVCinemas/status/1706898783181971522 im not sure what that is, unless its dual laser 1:43?? which doesnt makes sense why dont they just equipped this one with the same dual laser/specs too and not different ones between branches.

I went to Lalaport again (third time in this week), this time for The Creator at BIG hall!
I think The Creator is more properly mixed for Dolby Atmos, and the sound imaging was the best I've ever experienced.

It's not the powerful / bassy type, but it's super accurate. I could actually hear the exact location in the hall where the sound is coming from - there was a scene the sound is coming from the side of the hall, I thought it was someone playing the music from their phone. It's really something I have never experienced in other halls before.

I also counted the number of speakers in the hall: 7 on each side, 6 at the back, and 14 on the ceiling. Not sure how many behind the screen.
*
hows the aspect ratio? apparently the creator utilize wide screen, does the black bar very noticeable?

theyve officially released the dimensions for tgv bukit jalil imax screen size. 20m x 11m https://twitter.com/TGVCinemas/status/17086...3688172/photo/1 for comparison the biggest is 19.4m x 25.9m for sunway velocity. so the old one with crappy xenon projector is more than twice taller than the new laser

Overall, I can understand anip94's criticism, but I think the image quality sentiment is an Interstellar/isolated case only as my prior visits to this hall with different films had excellent image quality.

*
yeah, i think the image quality is just gsc being lazy and not entirely fault of the projector. they might have just use the 2k copy of Interstellar thats good enough for normal projector and standard hall. but when its projected into BIG screen its not gonna get as sharp. for reference i watched Inception re-release on GSC standard hall and i think the imagine quality was good. im also surprise that BIG have a fixed aspect ratio screen and not adaptive like standard hall. if anyone notices, the screen on standard hall can sometime shrink after all the advertising to fit the movie's aspect ratio hence eliminating any apparent black bar.

QUOTE(Katharsis @ Oct 4 2023, 01:20 PM)
TGV Twitter said that the screen is 1.9:1 so expected to be that size, but man that is quite small lol, I think it's similar to IOI City Mall's IMAX Laser in size given the SEA IMAX VP said IOI's is roughly 11m tall. This makes Bukit Jalil's IMAX to be smaller than 1U. Only thing going for it is the IMAX Laser projection and 12 audio channels. Kinda bumped out no cap.
No since the hall uses Xenon 2k IMAX projection, max at 1.9:1 aspect ratio. There are rumours that this hall will be renovated for IMAX Laser GT (dual lasers), so it could eventually display 1.43:1 IMAX films.
i think thats the max screen size for single laser projector, which sucks. if they wanted to match 1U and Sunway Velocity screen size then they had fit them with dual laser system. seeing how expansive that is i just cant see them being fitted in local cinemas. so if people actually wanted to experience proper immersive big imax screen then they have to watch blurry movies with the crappy xenon projector. and the end of the day the consumer still lose.

Confirmed.
IMAX With Laser and 12-Channel Audio System is COMING to three existing halls within 3 month's time.
Sunway Velocity, 1U and surprisingly KLCC.
😁😁😁

I wonder which of the 4 places will be getting the new IMAX With Laser treatment?

Velocity and 1U actually pretty close to IMAX GT (Grand Theater) experience with their massive screen, would be interesting to see if TGV will cough up for the more expensive dual-laser system which fits the GT hall or renovate the hall to shrink down the screen to fit the single laser spec. we will see

Based on insider info, yes Dual Laser also in planning.
But my insider said not in existing places.
Possibly at a new place.

Hmm? which current popular mall in Klang Valley that doesn't comes with a cinema yet??? 🤔🤔 interesting.

newly open high scales mall in KV should be Damansara City Center under pavillion, and TRX Mall. but im pretty sure GSC already planned to open at TRX so its not there.

got some complimentary tickets and had the chance to watch killers of the flower moon on IMAX Pavi Bukit Jalil. i have to say the hall is bigger and the seating inclination is slightly better than Imax IOI. the screen size is expectedly smaller than 1U and Sunway Velocity and just as the same size as GSC IOI's which is expected since they share the same type of projector. The seat is better than GSC IMAX since it has the capability to recline but the legroom is disappointingly a bit tight since TGV obviously trying to fit as much as butts in the room as they can. it also way superior, than GSC BIG, which i can say bothering on being uncomfortable.

well as for the movie itself, the black bars were apparent. aspect ratio did not take the full screen. the movie was alright, but is it something that i recommend watching on Imax? not really. i think standard cinema will do, plus the movie itself will come out on AppleTV soon. also be aware of its long runtime, even longer than Oppenheimer if you could believe.

no mentioned of dual-laser at all, seems like both GSC and TGV only willing to shell out for single-laser. wondering whats this means for the legacy TGV's Imax halls which already much fitted with bigger screens than the current and upcoming IMAX Laser. some of them has been mentioned due for upgrade process but will they'll be slim down or be fitted with dual-laser?? which is very expensive.

My insider said YES dual laser IMAX is in planning.
But he said it is a secret for now.
And dual laser will be in a new shopping mall.
So I dunno how accurate it is.

I rasa it will be at Aurum Theatre at TRX Mall.
Eh tercakap pulak GSC buat Aurum Theatre kat situ.
😂😂😂
*
if this is true then, another huge fumble for TGV as GSC once again bet them to the punch with dual-laser after being the first with laser. TGV despite used to having a long exclusivity deal with IMAX now is playing catch up, adoi 🤦‍♂️

its likely single laser. if its actually dual then they wouldnt shut up about it on the marketing.

GSC beating TGV to the punch again? 😁😁

late to upgrade to laser now they didnt get any dual laser too despite undergoing a lot of current imax hall upgrading renovation process. all they can brag about now is the 12 channel audio, which lets be honest if they didnt market it that way no one really would notice 🤣🤣🤣🤣

So, which is the best IMAX theater now? I would definitely like to experience Dune 2 in a taller format than the usual cinescope. Since even watching at home on the Blu-ray is just cinescope and not even the 16:9.
*
i can tell you which ones is not because ive been there but not the newly upgraded ones (1U, Velocity). IOI, Pavi BJ all just average.

QUOTE(KaiHD @ Feb 18 2024, 03:45 AM)
was interested originally but decided against it since it was showing at 1Utama. If they did one at Velocity I would've snapped a ticket up so quick lol

(1Utama is pretty far from me, and the screen don't support the tall IMAX format like Velocity does. not to mention Velocity being only 15 minutes away lol)
*
haha kamon la if velocity is only 15mins away then 1U is not that far, at least for me anyway since im used to driving from KL to PJ. can take the MRT somemore. plus youre gonna be there at least for 5 hours i think its worth it. but all this talks is useless now i think. last i check the tickets for marathon is selling very fast. almost sold out unless you like the shit seats

Yes, because Velocity's screen is both wider and taller than 1U's (source here, thanks @katharsis):
[attachmentid=11491663]

So even when you take into account just the 1.9 part of Velocity's screen, you get a bigger image than on 1U's screen (source here, thanks @ericling):
[attachmentid=11491664]

are these the updated one? because fair few of those listed got an upgrade late last year with the laser projector change

cmon GSC upgrade Southkey to Laser pls
*
Not interested in crossing the other side? haha heard SG got some decent IMAX cinemas hell a lot shorter than driving to go KL.

anyway, has anyone booked their Dune 2 IMAX ticket yet?
