My goto cinema is MBO BigScreen at ElementX Melaka, pretty much top notch in terms of PQ (but I usually get annoyed by the light from the keluar sign) and SQ for me.

At times I also went to watch movies when I was outstation... last I recalled was TGV KLCC Hall 1 for Transformers. This hall is laoya sweat.gif . Then my friends was telling me to try out IMAX (which I have not, cause there's no IMAX in Melaka...)

What I've surveyed is, the one at IOI City Mall is a dual laser? Is this a 1.9:1, and if the SQ is up to standard?

TGV will be launching an IMAX with Laser and 12-channel surround sound (like Dolby Atmos) at TGV Pavilion Bukit Jalil. Screenings begin on 5 October 2023. Source: @TGVCinemas tweet on Twitter

The other imax halls don’t have 12 speakers? (Ah ok, it’s actually 7.1.4 config… hence the 12 channels).

I tried to count the amount of speakers at the MBO BigScreen ElementX, front unknown… left has about 8, right about 8, rear about 8 and top about 16ish. But I guess the imax has full range towers, the ones in Dolby Atmos is smaller speakers.

the admin also teased about something bigger when someone asked about the aspect ratio https://twitter.com/TGVCinemas/status/1706898783181971522 im not sure what that is, unless its dual laser 1:43?? which doesnt makes sense why dont they just equipped this one with the same dual laser/specs too and not different ones between branches.
*
Wait a sec, if it’s upgradeable to 1:43 this is interesting! I just hope the screen is taller and not just adding black borders on the sides.

QUOTE(rideverest @ Sep 27 2023, 07:07 PM)
Super pumped for this! Imax TGV Velocity and 1U getting upgrades too! There's a mention of KLCC having it as well!
*
KLCC getting imax hall? The Hall 1 SQ is very lousy 😅

Probably Central i-City instead of 1U or Sunway Pyramid. That and Sunway Velocity are their biggest screens, can fully display IMAX's tall 1.43:1 format

If Sunway Velocity gets dual-Laser, habislah GSC for me (unless they upgrade MyTown from BIG to IMAX Laser hall). I won't wanna watch movies anywhere else hahaha
*
But if going to 1.43:1 meaning introduce black bars at the side... then tak syiok la. Unless the hall is tall enough, change new screen which fully utilizes the space drool.gif

I won’t mind if they rescreen Zack Synder’s Justice League… full movie of 4:3 😆 to experience real imax.

theyve officially released the dimensions for tgv bukit jalil imax screen size. 20m x 11m https://twitter.com/TGVCinemas/status/17086...3688172/photo/1 for comparison the biggest is 19.4m x 25.9m for sunway velocity. so the old one with crappy xenon projector is more than twice taller than the new laser
*
Sunway Velocity is a tall screen, 4:3 ratio! Does this show the IMAX movies in 4:3?

So, which is the best IMAX theater now? I would definitely like to experience Dune 2 in a taller format than the usual cinescope. Since even watching at home on the Blu-ray is just cinescope and not even the 16:9.

i can tell you which ones is not because ive been there but not the newly upgraded ones (1U, Velocity). IOI, Pavi BJ all just average.
*
So I should consider either 1U or Velocity? Which one of these has bigger screen? Btw, these are all the 1.8:1 screen?

I live in Cheras, so that 15-minute figure is if got jam. tongue.gif also Velocity is like 5km away, but 1Utama is four times as far lmao
Both 1U and Velocity has laser, but Velocity has the biggest IMAX screen in Malaysia.

Basically Velocity > 1Utama. For more details on this recommendation, see this post by sifu @Katharsis

Personally, I'd say just go whichever closer since the difference in screen size not that big haha
*
QUOTE(Katharsis @ Feb 19 2024, 05:29 PM)
Check out post 711 in page 36 for full details but tldr Velocity is bigger with a 1.43:1 screen, but is single laser and can't display above 1.9:1. 1U's screen is 1.9:1 (actually slightly taller) so the whole screen will be filled during 1.9:1 scenes, but it is smaller in terms of overall image display size vs Velocity, still big tho.

Preference comes down to your tolerance of letterboxing/greyish bars at the top and bottom of the screen
Don't diss 1U IMAX bro. I remember my time having to take 1 hour 20 min-ish trip to 1U to get a good IMAX experience because Velocity's hall had that twin seat bs.

I would take 1U for wide aspect ratio films over Velocity honestly, since wide AR films only display like 1/3 of the screen there. However, Pav BJ opened, I prefer going there over 1U mainly due to distance, but have to drive la vs 1U easy yet long mrt ride
*
Thank you both!

So in summary, Velocity has the largest screen but it is a 1.9:1 on a 1.43:1 screen. My question would be... would the Velocity's 1.9:1 (image only) is bigger than 1U's screen?

PS, I'm coming from Melaka so both would be fine laugh.gif

Yes, because Velocity's screen is both wider and taller than 1U's (source here, thanks @katharsis):
[attachmentid=11491663]

So even when you take into account just the 1.9 part of Velocity's screen, you get a bigger image than on 1U's screen (source here, thanks @ericling):

Good info, thanks! Velocity it is then biggrin.gif

Check out post #711 in page 36. It's my extensive guide to IMAX Malaysia. Tldr the best in Klang Valley is Velocity, 1U then Pav BJ as they are IMAX Laser with 12 channel audio. The next best is Central I-City but it's Xenon and 6 channel audio only, however it's still great because that screen is large, largest 1.9:1 screen in Malaysia (3rd largest in general).
Lol sure your wife won't be jealous meh? You experiencing IMAX haha, or you testing first then bring her and maybe your kids there in the future XD?
*
She won't appreciate it one lah... she can watch Dune 2 at home when its available... (minus the IMAX aspect ratio hahaha!)

I dam sure you be more wow with dual laser IMAX easily

laugh.gif rclxms.gif

Xenon will be able to show the 1.43:1 ratio?

Velocity is single laser... but at least ada 1.9:1 la, and just wanna listen to all the rave about IMAX's big speaker how does it sound.

Yikes, I recall watching at KLCC TGV Hall 1 where the picture quality just got destroyed by the exit lights in front 😅 spoilt my Transformers experience tsk.

Side note, sound was crappy too so that didn’t help 😂 but I happened to be at KLCC and didn’t want to be seeing spoilers…

The new empire is also IMAX aspect ratio?

Gonna be watching at 10:30am, having high hopes on this hall 🤩

Screen not as big as I expected (or smaller than what I expect, let’s see when 1.9:1 kicks in)… and K seems a bit too far back 😂
