Oppenheimer rerun is happening.

I'm planning to watch it again after having watched it twice in IMAX already at IOI City Mall before all the IMAX upgrades.

Thinking of watching it at Velocity now since it should be the best one. Does anyone know if Oppenheimer actually benefits from the 12-channel audio?

It won't since the film was mixed in 6 channel audio only. That's Nolan's MO for his films' technical specs. Still, you will have a great time in Velocity with Oppenheimer and the ticket price too is very appealing ay RM 20 vs GSC IMAX RM 33 of the film

Ah, I see. That's a shame. GSC IMAX was the only IMAX with laser so that was why I watched Oppenheimer there when it was first released (despite the smaller screen size), but there's no reason for me to watch at GSC IMAX anymore after all the upgrades TGV had done. Well, unless they somehow surprise us with dual laser and/or bigger screens than even Velocity's. Also considering the ticket price they offer now (RM 33 for a rerun? Really?) and the travel distance for me, it's a no-brainer.

So to be able to experience Oppenheimer again on a bigger screen (albeit not fully utilising the 12-channel audio system) should be good enough for me.

Would there be a reason for me to watch at 1U or Pavilion BJ instead of Velocity for a movie like Oppenheimer, considering the aspect ratio? I watched The Creator at Pavilion BJ IMAX and that was my only experience there, and it felt similar to IOI City Mall IMAX. Haven't tried either Velocity or 1U yet (the upgraded ones).

1U and Pav BJ's screens are (as close to) 1.9:1 aspect ratio in size, basically they are wider than Velocity's tall 1.43:1 (1.33:1 specifically). All these halls are single laser, so the tallest image you will get is 1.9:1. This comes down to how much you hate letterboxing ala the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. I watched Oppenheimer in 1U and the whole screen was able to be filled and that felt very engrossing considering how big 1U's screen is (at least in Malaysia's standard xd).

Velocity on the other hand, you will get letterboxing no matter what, but considering how big and tall the screen is, the movie's image will still look enormous and captivating despite having letterboxing during the 1.9:1 scenes.

IMO, Velocity is the better spot for Oppenheimer. Even without Laser as I watched this movie in the previous Xenon hall twice because of how big the movie image is. Personally this time around, I plan to visit Pav BJ for Oppenheimer's rerun, since this hall wasn't open during Oppie's original release and I visited all IMAX halls in Klang Valley with this film for review purposes (except I-City as that's too far and inconvenient for me)... However, man, me reminiscing my time in Velocity with this film was such a blast and it's convincing me to just go there instead... Ahhh.

And potentially risk my favourite seating spots to always be booked by others? XP. Lol joking joking. Row K is my favourite for 1.9:1 movies there. I wouldn't go below J as it becomes uncomfortable to envelope the whole movie's image within your vision

Hmm... I don't really mind the letterboxing, and I also want to experience Oppenheimer on Velocity's big screen since I've already experienced it twice at IOI City Mall which is very similar to Pav BJ.

Hey, why not watch it twice: one at Pav BJ and one at Velocity again? laugh.gif

I visited IMAX halls 7 times for Oppenheimer during its original theatrical run before the TGV Laser upgrades, all Klang Valley's halls except I-City's. That and I have bought the blu ray and watched the shit out of the film. So... Oooof. Im watching the film in BJ Pav to just check the tick box la, that and assessing a true IMAX film here.

Velocity is the bomb, hope you enjoy your time there.

Never too many watches of Oppenheimer. laugh.gif Honestly, if I have the budget and time, I'd probably do the same thing as you. Oppenheimer is constantly so engrossing that I can't really get enough of it. My favourite film of 2023.

Hope you enjoy your 8th watch!

That's the big IMAX film of this year. Hope that a Laser GT hall will open alongside or during the film's air time. Other than that, it will be the best film to test out the capabilities of the 12 channel audio TGV and a small copy extend of GSC have been promoting about.

Yeahh! But even without a new GT hall, Sunway Velocity Laser upgrade is also worth a rewatch (there wasn't any Laser hall in Malaysia during Dune 1 original release)

Anyway I did a quick calculation to see in which hall we can get the biggest image with a 1:9 ratio film (all IMAX hall in Malaysia can only project 1:9, not 1:43).

Attached Image

If the screen dimension I get from online and my calculation is correct - looks like Velocity is a clear winner, especially when it's now a Laser hall (i-City in second place is still Xenon, not Laser).

Included IMAX Melbourne for reference - a trip to Melbourne maybe? rclxm9.gif

Update : finally said f it and drove 3 hours to catch Oppenheimer in Velocity's IMAX.

It's my second IMAX Laser experience after Across the Spiderverse @ GSC IOI City Mall, and what can I say? If even single Laser is stunning like this, then how satisfying will Dual Laser be?

Nice! Thanks to you, we get exact numbers of screen utilization in Klang Valley's IMAX halls. For non-Selangor/Klang Valley citizens, you can check here for your IMAX screen size to do some self-calculation: https://reddit.com/r/malaysia/comments/va0t...mas_in_malaysia (wtf, Kuching's IMAX screen is also 1.43:1 and is only slightly behind the size of Velocity's)

I was referring to Dune 2, not the first but is Dune 1 actually getting an IMAX re-run in Malaysia? I was lucky enough to watch Dune in IMAX in Velocity back in 2021, it was the last screening day of it and boy was it something. I hope it gets an IMAX re-run so people can see large scale the film can be as the blu-ray is only in 2.39:1. Here's a comparison here between standard 2.39:1, 1.9:1 and 1.43:1 for Dune:

user posted image

Usually, this isn't that big of a deal as some filmmakers like Nolan shoot to protect, which means the same scene in different aspect ratios will still retain key points of interests and artistic vision. However, for Dune's case...

user posted image

Look at how much key objects you're missing in this shot. Granted, this is 1.43:1 vs 2.39:1 and I can't find a 1.9:1 image of this scene, but you can do a visual estimation and yeah, you still lose a small chunk of the top and bottom image. Despite that, I believe 1.9:1 for Dune is still good enough to convey the large scale of the scenes, hence why I do recommend people interested to check out Dune 1 if it's going to have a re-run in IMAX.

Haha chun! laugh.gif rclxms.gif

No love for 4DX here? laugh.gif tongue.gif

I think all movies with sky fighting sequence will be the ultimate. Even IMAX no umph when it comes to plane combat sequence.

I am no Bollywood freak like MaybachS600 but dam Fighter (the top gun of India) shake so great like i am on the jet roller coastering in the hall. laugh.gif rclxm9.gif

What another mighty 4DX experience that was. There is 3 now which i still think the best ever in 4DX only.

1 Top Gun Maverick (usa)
2 Emergency Declaration (korea)
3 Fighter (india/bollywood)

Looking forward 2 more aviation based blockbusters after wards icon_idea.gif icon_idea.gif

Because of the fuking Singa folks 4DX in the south 42.50 and IMAX normal RM42.50 and RM44.50 GSC and TGV respectively. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif I bet KL 4DX was not that expensive surely.

4DX cost the same here in KV, at least at IOI City Mall. KL side like Lalaport is RM39.50 but not much difference la. IMAX right now for Fighter is only showing in IMAX 3D at TGV, which is at RM42. GSC not showing anything in IMAX other than Oppenheimer right now, even then, the price is whack at RM31

Normal IMAX even in Johor should be RM35, lower if other age groups. The Argylle IMAX ticket prices aren't available to book in other states yet, so can wait to check the ticket prices of that one lah.

Not to say no love for 4DX, I remembered my Top Gun 2 4DX trip which was a blast with the motion seats. It's just I prefer a bigger screen, better image quality and strong surround sound. 4DX is strong mostly for the seats and "weather effects."

Ticket prices also pretty high at RM40 average, and even early bird/student prices are at RM31, so if got choice, I would choose IMAX/Big DA over 4DX. I think I'll go for 4DX if i watch a film first in IMAX/Big, after that, if the action is very strong, it specifically motion wise, I'll opt for 4DX la, but yeah, mainly ticket prices and preference dictates my choice here.

Speaking of 4DX, recently I went to watch Aquaman in 4DX.

The experience was so terrible haha, just nonsense moving non-stop

Top Gun 2 in 4DX was one of the most memorable experience though
