Visa and MasterCard now charge a cross border transaction fee even when no currency conversion occurs. This relatively new fee - “cross border transaction fee” (MC) or “International Service Assessment (ISA) fee” (Visa) – was initiated by Visa and MC to ‘fight’ usage of the international credit card processing network when no currency conversion occurs.

How much is the cross border transaction fees usually? 0.8% is damn high for Apple Online Store. More than RM 30 already.

Yeah apparently they do.
I paid for RM522, but was charged RM526.18 instead. Called the centre, they said it was a fee charged by MasterCard. Cos the payment centre was AirAsia Philippines.

It will lump into your retail price. You will notice it after all because u are using ringgit overseas.

yeap definitely u will notice it cos the total quoted price is in ringgit but when it appear on your online banking/bank statement u would see an extra 0.8% sweat.gif

but anyway if u are fine with 4.2% cash back and the amount is not that huge still ok to use it nod.gif don't think you can complain this to bank negara

For other currency there's no cross border fees. It only apply when the gateway is in a foreign country while the transaction is in RM.

I wonder if banks only charge 0.8% to selected website only? It shouldn't be that case right? But I'm been using HLB Wise to purchase from 2 Korean website, non of them charging extra than initial conversion amount. I can see the different (additional charges) when using CIMB card.

Reporting no cross border fee when purchase Xiaomi using HLB Wise...i can safely assume HLB Wise won't charge cross border fee. But I would prefer to find cards that give some reward like cashback or points yet not charging cross border fee, any idea?

best would be aeon cards, if you used mbb2 cards and pay in usd the difference would be between 2.5 to 3%

amazon.com now does have option to pay on your cc currency..e.g malaysia card allow to be pay with RM (using amazon exchange rate)..
so you need to find out amazon exchange rate better or cc (bank) exchange rate better..

Just realised airasiago.com is not local payment gateway.

According to cimbclicks... it says FR... france???

So yes, bookings via airasiago.com will incur 0.8% grumble.gif

hi friends,

I've recently spent my cimb card overseas. They had informed me that the conversion rates comes visa international. Upon checking at visa website, there is a place where we can input our bank fees where i keyed in 1%. Upon checking my bill, i realised that i was overcharged with 1% extra by cimb.

This means visa gives a horrible exchange rate and top of that charges 1% exchange rate. Then Cimb charges 1% extra. Total is 2% instead of 1%.

Has any bro's been through this situation. I lodged official complain with BNM and guess what. i opened all my bill dated 7 years and got my extra 1% back. Please be aware!!!!!!!

bear in mind air ticket is not eligible for CIMB cash rebate, meaning you'll get 0.8% fee , but 0.2% rebate.

I am well aware of the keyword 'airasiago'.

Since AirAsiaGo offers booking both flight and hotel booking through the same payment gateway, I am not that optimistic it has the capability to differentiate your booking type (air or hotel). Hence there is a likelihood the payment gateway is registered under air ticket (Not sure).

Or better still, if it is under 'Online' category MCC.

Wah!! Can claim back, I also want !

Just wondering what is the basis of your claim?
Does CIMB TnC say they charge 1% over exchange rate ? or is it BNM's rule that banks can only charge 1% ?

0.8% cross border fees apply if paid by PayPal (because Paypal payment gateway is outside Malaysia, nothing to do with Xiaomi). I assume you paid via Molpay based on the description?

Now I understand why sometimes the amount charged to credit card is higher.

SCB charged a fee for airbnb and sometimes when groupon used a foreign gateway, CIMB charged fee too.

cross border fees are extra fees which is 0.8% that you have fork out and yeah for the banks that don't charge means they are the ones actually absorbing the cost .... so far I have known Aeon gives the best exchange rate .... take a look at this thread to compare https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1845691

if you have used the same CC to pay for both paypal and direct is the same rate so most likely it doesn't have the cross border fees, so you don't have to worry biggrin.gif

but if you use amex to pay as compared to visa/mastercard, you would see a difference nod.gif

If you use the CC and merchant listed on Post #1, probably your final charged/posted amount will be higher by 0.8%

So far tested with Maybank + Citibank, no such charges.
Somehow for my CIMB card, I have not try it as may be charged for border fee if pay via Shopee, since their payment gateway is in oversea.

I am not so sure about this cross border fee being a fixed % rate. Coz I am using the CIMB card for spotify. Initially spotify will charge the exact amount of RM22.40. After the final amount, the first month was RM22.58 and second month was RM22.62. Is it possible that it relates to the currency exchange rates? With the current ringgit condition, it might gets higher

But if you use CIMB CR for Shopee you get 5% cashback. Minus the 1% it's still 4%. Better than MBB and Citibank right?

Best card for me for Shopee is PBB VS. No extra charges and 6% cashback.

yes you will get charged extra 1% by the merchants on post #1 so since CIMB gives you 5% therefore effective cash back is 4% sweat.gif

The rule is simple, avoid using CIMB card any oversea online transaction, then you are save.

Yes... if wjleong15 able to pay with RMB would be great, this would save some money.
But not everyone able with their alipay account in RMB, probably want to avoid some risk to ask alipay agent pay for the transaction? sweat.gif

However, whenever I need any fund, my China best friend will transfer to my AliPay or she helps me to pay for my stuff and we only kira when we meet each other. tongue.gif

For CIMB CR, it charges 1% for Shopee. So if SCB has cross border charges, which is yes as per first post, so it will have CBC.
Anyway, why not try and let us know? laugh.gif

Dai gor, I think u still don't get it.
The main reason why u being charged 1% is not because of the card.
It is bcuz u use Paypal.
No matter what card u use, as long as it is Malaysia local card, they will charge 1%.

If u directly use the card, no extra charge will be applied.

I did a online chat with a SC person.
He mention cross border and mark up is 2 different thing.
Mark up fee is charge as long the merchant is registered oversea.
I have doubt with his explanation, thus seeking help here.

Every bank will charge transaction fee for credit card payment in foreign currency.. but u won’t be able to c as they converted directly in MYR, so u can only assume their FX Rate is higher.. generally it is 1-2% higher

For cross border fee, u can see the difference. Eg, u make online txn in MYR with oversea merchant, ur OTP shown RM10, but ur bank will charge RM10.10, the 10cents is 1% cross border fee.

Cross border fee occur only when local currency transact in foreign gateway.

Which in ur case, only have charge the conversion fee by visa/ master.

U not spending in local myr. No border charge.

You can follow the list in post 1. Mst bank cards i have do not charge except cimb. I read somewhere or someone in forum mentioned, the fee only charged on cimb cards that pay cash rebate. Supposedly not all cimb card.

Cancelled my cimb card anyway. Whatever.

hi sifus, i got a question.

i accidentally paid Lazada using PayPal with my CIMB card and kena charge 1% cross-border fee.

then i found a better deal elsewhere and cancelled the order, so Lazada refund Paypal that refund my CIMB card in full but without the 1%.

Called CS to dispute the 1%, they say this is not normal procedure and are asking to file a dispute form. The gotcha is that I need to pay RM15 if they reject the dispute.

Anyone successfully got the cross-border fee refunded due to a reversed transaction? Else, I will just pay the 1%, its just RM3x.

Visa and MasterCard now charge a cross border transaction fee even when no currency conversion occurs. This relatively new fee - “cross border transaction fee” (MC) or “International Service Assessment (ISA) fee” (Visa) – was initiated by Visa and MC to ‘fight’ usage of the international credit card processing network when no currency conversion occurs.

shopee keeping 2 payment gateways to manage/swings the traffic to either one so that their huge volume doesnt route to single gateway.

also, is due to rate they are getting from payment processor.

earlier, i was getting cybersource --> ipay88 briefly --> cybersource again --> ipay88, after i noticed my saved cc (from cybersource) is erased.

Only lousy bank like CIMB & SC so cheap charged that stupid fee without notice. Should compliant to Bank Negara together. If everyone make 1 compliant regarding the same charges, I believe Bank Negara can do thing already... I already make few Compliant to Bank Negara about those illegal surcharge by merchant and also by Banker.

And guys, Bank Negara already officially announce in newspaper that All Merchant is not allowed to charged surcharge when customer pay by Credit card.

Try advise and tell everyone near you, never ever apply for CIMB or SC credit card let them cheaply make losses of not having user at all. Also, if you guys using autopay standing instruction for TELEKOM, you never get the agreed 2% rebate from the stupid CIMB BANK Credit Card. They think they got related to government people they can bully citizen and cardholder. So BAD!

Hope everyone can make compliant to Bank Negara to teach CIMB a lesson of bullying customer.

Is there a list of website that triggers the cross border fee? That way, the users can use the right CC for these websites.

Or there is only 10 websites that are stated in the reported case?

Visa and MasterCard now charge a cross border transaction fee even when no currency conversion occurs. This relatively new fee - “cross border transaction fee” (MC) or “International Service Assessment (ISA) fee” (Visa) – was initiated by Visa and MC to ‘fight’ usage of the international credit card processing network when no currency conversion occurs.

actually, we dont know which payment gateway shopee use on our orders because during checkout, i just key in my credit card and that it.
to play safe, i already stop using scb cc for most website except lazada.com.my
the rest, the best way and safe way is using maybank cc

basically 7% expedia discount is only worth 6%, suggest to use another card that doesnt charge these cross border transaction fees if possible.

no way to know upfront

xborder fee is post-processing by your issuing bank.

using this topic as a guide lor, can isolate/avoid issuing banks which impose xborder fee.

afaik there are 2 fees:

1) network forex fee, usually stated in the general card t&c for all foreign txn. usually bank will markup ~1% on top of converted value in MYR

2) eg recent announcement by HLB is more to DCC, which is another 1% fee

3) bigpay's changes is to impose DCC fee of 0.5%. this is why they said most cases will see total of 1.5% = 0.5% dcc + 1.0% forex fee

4) cimb twe doesnt charge forex fee (product feature, iinm), but it does charge DCC across the board.

Use the same currency so you don't pay conversion fees. I pay in ringgit.
