Well, to some (especially Englishmen), to call it 'soccer' is disrespectful. Perspective.
Let's not digress from the core of the issue. The point of discussion here is, are both terms mean the same thing? And by having 2-different terms here, would the game be played in similar fashion? If the answer is yes, we're simply debating over a non-existent issue here, more of pride than anything. If the answer is a big NO, then we do really have to have a serious discussion over it. Lol.
Irrespective of what the English believes in or their preference of the term football over soccer as what you've suggested so, I have nothing except respect for what the English .... oops maybe I should say the British believes in, they have their good reasons to be so, moreso they have been passionately attached to the game for more than a century and it would be suicide to now ask them to call it soccer.
But the same that cannot be said that others must follow suite and use the term football, if they choose or prefer the word soccer over football. Not sure on your opinion of being disrespectful by using the term football. I do join some other football forums out of leisure, I believe they're mainly UK based forums and i chose to use both words at random and I don't get any reaction at all from the forummers, looks like we're more British than the British here.
Just the other day not too long ago, this ang-moh fren said to me ... "hey, i'll be late for the event i'll need to take the 2-boys to school for a soccer match" and i jokingly I asked .... "Football is it?," reply I got was ..... "pal you sounds more English than me, ho ho ho". Lol.
Nevertheless, you may wanna google espn.soccer.com and espn.football.com and sees what comes out of it.
Cheers and have a nice day.
