Me and my "idea".
Buy low Sell high and in my case ..trying to "maximise" mutual units
Of course in the process, flying knives kena a lot

See the RED[COLOR=red] circle

Attached Image

I rather incur the 0.75% penalty fees than see my mutual swinging like Tarzan up and down.

I have now for my PRSF ----- 284,977.41 instead of 280,334.14
The differance is i get to lose RM3k less if market drop but gain RM3k if market upwards.

You get my drift icon_rolleyes.gif

okko

explanation here:

if you just leave the fund without doing anything

just after GE13
See prices movement here
http://mutualtracker.com/funds/view/43

6 May 2013,
i switch to PRSF from PIMMF
total units is 280,395.8[COLOR=blue]4 (RM 183,126.52) at 0.6531

if i just let it sit there

10 Jun 2013 at 0.6784 (RM 190,220.53)
25 Jun 2013 at 0.6516 (RM 182,705.92) <--------- drastic drop to estd 1720 KLCI index
22 Aug 2013 at 0.6549 (RM 183,631.23) <----------another drastic drop to estd 1720 KLCI as well.
(As long mutual fund units stay the same, the value is always roughly same)[COLOR=red]

Above is based on my total units of 280,395.84[COLOR=blue]
Question is,
How to do better than EPF?
Just hoping that Malaysia keep going up is not going to work anymore.

On the two date which i incur 0.75% switching fee which cost me RM 1,372.87
23 May 2013 and 14 Jun 2013
My PRSF total units is reduce to 280,334.14[COLOR=green]
( Speculation fail but minimal losses )[COLOR=red]

Just imagine if i just let it sit there hoping for miracle
On 22 Aug 2013,
my portfolio worth only at RM 183,590.82

On 15 August 2013
i decided to switch to PIMMF which incur another penalty at 0.75% (RM 1,398.86)
(PRSF at 0.6823)

i managed to switch back to PRSF at 0.6666
which now total units is 284,977.41
[COLOR=purple]

Now
i have 284,977.41[COLOR=purple] units instead or 280,334.14[COLOR=green]

If the price can go back to my old switching price of 0.6823
my value is now RM 194,440.08 instead of RM191,271.98

Hope you understand when i say
"i am trying to buy LOW and sell HIGH" even though at 0.75% switching fee

Oh..ok, I understand now. But I am not good at timing the market lei. How to decide when to switch or not.

Currently I will just do rebalancing every end of year. Or if I gain substantial profit in that particular year, I will rebalance earlier.

i tried and read the market almost everyday.
If possible, do Online switching.
As long you do it before 4pm, it will be that day pricing.

Use KLCI indices as your guideline,
Mutual funds tend to follow pattern

I have to admit I didn't follow your simulation above words by words.... blush.gif but just based on your last 2 paragraphs, you might still made a wrong decision by switching too frequently and incured ~2700 of switching fees. Because in your 2nd last paragraph - even though your total unit is increased, the NAV doesn't. And at your last paragraph, it should be again the NAV that is matter... if you assume the price per unit go back to your initial price with additional total units, you are assuming market is getting good so total NAV has increased from your earlier switching NAV.... But, you have just incured ~RM2700 because of your frequent switching activities..... perhaps other sifu can help here....

My apology if I misunderstood you ya... shocking.gif

What MakNok tried to do was mitigating the downward slide... and managed to reduce it, and gained 1.66%.

With reference to my previous post on the "25 Ringgit Hotel", just imagine if the 90-days mark was passed and only need to pay a flat RM25 instead of those tens of hundreds in penalty fee 0.75%.

That's an interesting post, much appreciate it as it shows that there's more than one way to skin a cat... end result might still be the same. The cat got hunted down!

Cheers. Happy hunting.

why not you just buy ETF that follow KLCI? lower cost for you to buy, switch, etc..seriously mutual fund not suitable for in-out so frequent like this.just my 2cents. icon_rolleyes.gif

BTW all PFSF, PRSF, PDSF are good funds, can use your EPF to buy it and invest equally for all 3 funds.

See my posting again.
Whatever EQUITY funds you invested now will have same scenario like mine as long you do nothing on it.

check on your fund on this specific date
25 Jun 2013[COLOR=red] at 0.6516 (RM 182,705.92) <--------- drastic drop to estd 1720 KLCI index
22 Aug 2013[COLOR=red] at 0.6549 (RM 183,631.23) <----------another drastic drop to estd 1720 KLCI as well.

I bet your portfolio also suffer the same fate as mine.
Just imagine if you can do "CORRECT" switching and even incur 0.75% penalty,
you just might have more units eventually.

I have done that and that is why i share here.

One more thing, don't switch to bonds as it will attract another 0.25% penalty when you switch back to equity less than 90 days.
