Dome Switch
user posted image
Dome switch keyboards are a hybrid of flat-panel membrane and mechanical keyboards. They bring two circuit board traces together under a rubber or silicone keypad using either metal "dome" switches or polyester formed domes. The metal dome switches are formed pieces of stainless steel that, when compressed, give the user a crisp, positive tactile feedback. These metal types of dome switches are very common, are usually reliable to over 5 million cycles, and can be plated in either nickel, silver or gold. The rubber dome switches, most commonly referred to as polydomes, are formed polyester domes where the inside bubble is coated in graphite. While polydomes are typically cheaper than metal domes, they lack the crisp snap of the metal domes, and usually have a lower life specification. Polydomes are considered very quiet, but purists tend to find them "mushy" because the collapsing dome does not provide as much positive response as metal domes. For either metal or polydomes, when a key is pressed, it collapses the dome, which connects the two circuit traces and completes the connection to enter the character. The pattern on the PC board is often gold-plated.

Scissor Switch
user posted image
A special case of the computer keyboard dome-switch is the scissor-switch. The keys are attached to the keyboard via two plastic pieces that interlock in a "scissor"-like fashion, and snap to the keyboard and the key. It still uses rubber domes, but a special plastic 'scissors' mechanism links the keycap to a plunger that depresses the rubber dome with a much shorter travel than the typical rubber dome keyboard. Typically scissor-switch keyboards also employ 3-layer membranes as the electrical component of the switch. These stabilizing scissor-like devices extend the lifespan of the membrane to as much as 10 million keystrokes. They also usually have a shorter total key travel distance (2 mm instead of 3.5 – 4 mm for standard dome-switch keyswitches). This type of keyswitch is often found on the built-in keyboards on laptops and keyboards marketed as 'low-profile'. These keyboards are generally quiet and the keys require little force to press. Scissor-switch keyboards are typically slightly more expensive. They are harder to clean (due to the limited movement of the keys and their multiple attachment points) but also less likely to get debris in them as the gaps between the keys are often less (as there is no need for extra room to allow for the 'wiggle' in the key as you would find on a membrane keyboard).

Mechanical Keyboard Switches(All below are Mechanical Keyboard Switch)

Introduction - A Switch is Not "Just a Switch"
Many people ask for recommendations about switches without knowing exactly what they are looking for, but instead only with an idea of what their needs are. Fortunately, this is not always a problem because most mechanical switches will always feel nicer than rubber domes. However, the final choice is very important because a switch is not just a switch; it is the heart of what makes your keyboard have its feel and your personal tastes can make or break a keyboard for your uses. If you don't like the switch when you type on it, most likely, you won't ever like the keyboard.
Switches are generally rated by force using the weight measurement of Grams (g). Although force is more accurately described using Centinewtons (cN) However, 1g of weight applies about 1cN of downward force, so we can use "55g" when describing a 55cN-rated switch because that is sometimes easier to understand. For this fact; we'll use Grams as a measurement of force; though either term is correct.

Cherry MX Black Switches
Type: Linear Switch
Tactile: No
Clicky: No
Actuation Force: 60g (40g-80g overall)
Key Travel: 2mm to actuation, 4mm to bottom
=>Cherry MX-Black switches are linear (non-tactile) switches, these are considered one of the best switch types for gaming. When gaming, having a tactile bump does absolutely nothing because you're going to be bottoming out anyway. So these give you a very smooth feel. The actuation and release points are at the exact same position as well. So games that require a lot of double tapping become easier than on any other keyswitch. However, most people don't enjoy typing on them that much do in part, to their linear nature.

=>If you're a person who tends to hit a wrong key every so often while gaming, these will be beneficial in that the high actuation force will help prevent many of those accidental presses.

Cherry MX Brown Switches
Type: Tactile Switch
Tactile: Yes
Clicky: No
Actuation Force: 45g (55g Peak Force)
Key Travel: 2mm to actuation, 4mm to bottom
=>Cherry MX Brown switches are considered a middle ground between typing and "gaming" switches. They have a light, tactile feel half way through the key press that lets you know the switch has activated. This gives you an indication of what you can release the switch. The switch is considered a middle ground because the reset point & actuation point are close enough together than you can "float" at that point, enabling you to double tap faster.

=>As a note: this switch actually has a peak force of 55G, it is 45G at the point of actuation. This is due to the design of the Cherry switch itself.

user posted image
Cherry MX Blue Switches
Type: Tactile & Clicky Switch
Tactile: Yes, precise
Clicky: Yes
Actuation Force: 50g (60g Peak Force)
Key Travel: 2mm to actuation, 4mm to bottom
=>Cherry MX Blue switches are the best cherry switch for typing. The tactile bump can easily be felt, and the resistance is similar to your average keyboard.

=>Although many people find them just fine for gaming, some don't like the fact that the release point is above the actuation point. This can cause some trouble with double-tapping. This is usually the case with someone who has experienced other mechanical switches before hand.

=>As a note: this switch actually has a peak force of 60g, it is 50g at the point of actuation. This is due to the design of the Cherry switch itself.

user posted image
Cherry MX Clear Switches
Type: Tactile Switch
Tactile: Yes
Clicky: No
Actuation Force: 55g (65G peak force)
Key Travel: 2mm to actuation, 4mm to bottom
=>Cherry MX Clear switches have often been called "stiffer browns" though some users note that they have more of a tactile feel than browns do. This really can be a subjective topic, though this is another switch that could be considered "ballanced." The force required is comparable to most rubber dome keyboards, with a nice tactile feedback to tell you the key has actuated. These switches are harder to find on keyboards.

=>As a note: this switch actually has a peak force of 65g, it is 55g at the point of actuation. This is due to the design of the Cherry switch itself.

user posted image
Cherry MX Red Switches
Type: Linear Switch
Tactile: No
Clicky: No
Actuation Force: 45g
Key Travel: 2mm to actuation, 4mm to bottom
=>Cherry MX-Red's are another switch that can be considered a "gaming" switch. It's essentially a lighter version of the MX Black, requiring less force to actuate. Most people do not find this switch that good for typing or gaming because it is so light. This switch is hard to find; and was reported as obsolete. Though some board makers still use it for Special Edition keyboards.

user posted image
Buckling Spring Keyswitches
Type: Tactile & Clicky Mechanical Switch
Tactile: Yes, very precise
Clicky: Yes, loud
Actuation Force: 65g-70g
Key Travel: 2.3mm to actuation, 3.7mm to bottom
=>Buckling springs are pretty straightforward once you see them in action. After pushing the key down a certain distance the spring buckles under pressure, causing the hammer at the bottom to hit a membrane sheet and create an electrical contact. The buckling of the spring also provides tactile feedback and a satisfying click as it hits the shaft wall. And you might also notice through the force diagrams that this is the only mechanical switch where the tactile and audible feedback correspond to the exact moment the switch actuates.

Black Alps
Type: Tactile Mechanical Switch
Tactile: Yes
Clicky: No
Actuation Force: Simplified 60g, Complicated 70g
Key Travel: 3.5mm
=>Black Alps are one of the two most common Alps switch types. Many people do not like these switches due to the fact that they are stiff, bottom out hard, and tend to develop friction in the travel as they wear. Nonetheless, they are an improvement over most rubber dome keyboards.

=>There are two different types of Black Alps switch - an older type known as the "Complicated" due to the large number of parts in the switch, and a newer type known as the "Simplified", which was manufactured by Alps and some other companies. Complicated switches are common in many older keyboards, particularly the Dell AT101W, which is a very common mechanical keyboard from the 1990s.

=>The most well known Simplified Black switch is made by a company called Fukka, and was used in the ABS M1. The Fukka switch has less resistance, but many claim that it provides less solid tactility than the complicated switch.

White Alps
Type: Clicky & Tactile Mechanical Switch
Tactile: Yes
Clicky: Yes
Actuation Force: 60g-70g
Key Travel: 3.5mm
=>White Alps are one of the most most common Alps switch types. These are far more popular than the Black switches due to more pronounced tactility, and the lower force requirements of some versions. Like the Black Alps, White Alps are much easier to bottom out on compared with other mechanical keyswitch designs.

=>As with the Black switch. there are Complicated and Simplified White switches. The two most popular Simplified White switches are the Fukka and the XM. The XM is almost universally considered to be a terrible switch, it was used on some older Filco Zero models, and some vintage keyboards. The Fukka switch is quite popular, and some people prefer them over the Complicated switch. It is used on some current production Alps keyboards such as current production Filco Zeros, Matias keyboards and some others. Complicated White switches were used on some well made keyboards from the 90s such as the Northgate and Focus keyboards.

=>There are also a variety of White Alps-like switches of varying quality. Some, like the SMK Monterey, are considered very pleasant to type on..

user posted image
Topre Key Switches
Type: Tactile Capacitive Switch
Tactile: Yes
Clicky: No
Actuation Force: 30g, 35g, 45g, 55g depending on model
Key Travel: 4mm

=>Topre switches are somewhat of a hybrid switch, and are capacitive by nature. The Topre mechanism uses a spring underneath a rubber dome, and the depression of the spring causes a change in capacitance between the underlying capacitor pads. With this change in capacitance; the switch activates.

=>Topre Switches are considered some of the finest switches available, as they offer a very enjoyable typing experience with a quieter experience compared to a Cherry MX, Alps, or Buckling Spring switch. The reason is Topre switches have the smoothest force gradient even compared to Linear switches like MX-Reds and MX-Blacks.

Grats on V7 , Anyways my question when to cliffhanger went the previous thread got closed due to overpost.

Heavyarm state they are already out of stock for Ducky Shine , so thats a let down for me and the price is a bit too step for me.

And I don't see Ducky Shine with the wrist rest at all , cause I'm more comfortable typing with my wrist on the rest thingy.

Actually there is no major issue for Ducky Shining, but if you say about Razer BW... then different story
For wrist rest case, you could refer to earlier annoucement (refer here:Here) that we no will no longer distribute out the wrist rest but replace by other souvenir.

For the wrist rest wise, you can buy one at any computer accessories shop which i believe you can found a foam type wrist rest.

Yes , I Agree that Ducky Shining has no major issues (in fact i would say the whole line up doesn't have major issues as well)

It's just that for me when buying a keyboard the manufacturer should at least include a wrist rest for all types of users.Don't use one? They you can remove it to suit your needs.

But hey , I maybe wrong on this one , this is their market strategy.

As you stated that you can get foam type of wrist rest , yes there's that alternative , but when you want to buy a keyboard , you would expect that there should be a wrist rest included , and the second thing you noticed when the order you received it doesn't have a wrist rest, you need to go drive to any nearby accessory shop to one. A bit more work to do.

Not that I'm complaining or anything , it's just my 'buyer mindset' when it comes to Keyboard , there should be a wrist rest or some sort of similar thing.

I think its time for me to sell off my Leopold FC500RR-Red switch....
No disrespect to Cyclonechua and
There is nothing wrong with this keyboard, just that........

I have 3 different set of keycaps that cannot fit its spacebar on the Leopold!! and the coming sanctuary can't fit too I think...
Those keycaps sets' price are over the value of this keyboard now, so
looking for a user that do not want to play with keycaps to buy from me. It come with a free blank 104 keycaps sets, and 4 different color spacebar keys since I will not be using them since they are made to fit only Leopold.

any one interested or friend to recommend?

Serious??? can you take out both of them and place them side by side and take a photo of them and show us?

I mean put them up side down, and then one up one down.

Serious??? can you take out both of them and place them side by side  and take a photo of them and show us?

I mean put them up side down, and then one up one down.
to compare the hole at the back for key switches and stabilizer.

I think you should have another comparison with KBC's replacement spacebar or the spacebar of Leopold FC200R.

Cause actually apart from the spacing from Ducky/Filco, KBC's one can also fit in SS7G/FC200R which also having different spacing from Ducky/Filco.

In short, still need to confirm whether it is FC200R or FC500R standard is used on the FC700R.

I only have CM Trigger, Ducky and Leopold, and only one set of custom keycaps which are for MX... so I can't really find a KBC one. I am getting a 6gv2 soon, just for gaming, and then probably sell CM Trigger and get a blue switch keyboard to complete the family, and then RF in the future! notworthy.gif

That is unfair! sweat.gif

you should put everyone's keyboards in the list, this thread is not only for the luxury keyboards.

previously the thread went too long because cyclone put a keyboard and one line per use name for the list,
you can try list down the keyboards, and then list down the users below it in same line, and make the post shorter.

A Filco is still a mechanical keyboard and still costs a fortune to most people...

Not everyone can have legendary/rare keyboards.

Thank you very much for posting the photo, but I think we still can't know for sure the key fit or not,
can you please measure the distance between the middle hole and the side hole,
and the distance from the side of the key to the middle of the +hole of the side?
start and end at the middle of the + hole.

Isn't that a little easier? because even if listing like previous,
he need to list all the name and brand and the switch and the model after every user name.....
But now the model only need to list once,
and then all the user list below it, with their switch color beside it.

What's the list for anyways?
It's not very useful, and it serves to give a ton of headaches to the TS.

Plus some guy who never post in here just come in and say, hey, "I bought a mechanical keyboard, please add me to the list". And then what happens, what's the point of that at all?

Other than allowing you to show off your e-peen, without pictures at that, there's no purpose at all.
I mean, if you want to show off e-peen, you should be posting the pictures of your keyboard, no?

You are right about the passion, but the list is a long tradition from the previous threads,
and some person are following the thread that do not post often but they read often,
we will have the chance to know what keyboards they have, if they choose to be listed too.

Because it is tradition you must do it instead of evaluating what's the point of actually doing it?
Right, someone wants to open the first page and figure out how many person owns this keyboard or that keyboard. *sarcasm* Sounds fun to me. *sarcasm*

If you want people to know what keyboards you have, your sig is pretty damn fine. And you can maintain it yourself instead of asking TS to "please add me to the list".

For all I know, the way it works now is that some guy bought a shiny new keyboard, either comes in and say "hey, I bought a shiny keyboard, please add me" and never to return. Or just PM-ing the TS to do the same thing and never coming in to contribute to any discussion at all.

We should value discussion, and whatever value that can be added to this thread instead of telling the world how many people "was here" when he/she bought a keyboard.

Well, what you said is right, but I do check the front page for how many people owns a specific keyboard and I'll ask here if it's actually that good and I might get it. The list helps me too, I actually PM'd a few specific people to ask about brand because a few times when I posted here, no one replied to my post. It's like knowing how many people actually owns a mechanical keyboard and how famous it is compared to other keyboards, and not just how luxurious it is, but hey, if that's how you think, that's how you think right? I'm not gonna argue about it, but I guess you should take the list down if it's really troublesome for the OP. Whatever works, works! thumbup.gif

Congrats to Mechanical Keyboard V7.

to be honest, i'm very thankful that got a good guy that take over the thread, i was very busy recently with the part time job, and having to stay outdoor most of the time, and haven't spend a good time in front of my pc.

Thou, i have to apologize to alot of members in this and didn't maintaining the list as well as the thread. i'm sorry for things that are happening on here. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

As for the Leopold, there's some discussion between me and them regarding about the keyboard design. thou i'm trying suggest they move over to use the more standard option where all people could use the keycap(dye subbed or double shot) that they purchase.

I'm sure that the spacebar do make alot of customer that purchase the doubleshot ABS or dye sub PBT keycap unhappy.(including myself, since i do buy keycaps sets for myself, and only to found out that it's not compatible)

I'm hoping to find a solution out for us. As going to Leopold has lease option for custom keycaps, due to the fact there's a ugly spacebar that cannot be change.

It is a keyboard to symbolize the year 2012, which is the year of Dragon in Chinese zodiac, so they replace FGHJ to 2012... if you ask why is that location, it might because the F and J keys are usually where those typist position their index fingers at...

I found this online site that ship to 105 country. Included Malaysia and Thailand. Shipping fee is around USD10 for anything below 3kg.

Ducky DYOD Special addition black switch. But I dont think they have Eng wording variant. doh.gif

If you say why not,
then if there is one reason I would say no is that the spacebar is almost irreplaceable!
Other than that, Leopold is a very good keyboard.
I like the detachable USB cable, that even a Realforce do not have.

Not so sure but afaik most of the high speed or high end usb audio cable are using pure copper n silver as the inside wire material which give blazing fast input transfer oso reduce resistance...but I don know if it can effect keyboard performance or do kb really need high speed usb cable?

It's a design consideration.

You should ask 90% of the keyboard manufacturers why they don't choose to have detachable cables.

For one thing, before you get into this hobby, you'd only have 1 keyboard. Why would you want a keyboard that can be detached easily if you have a keyboard? Take in mind 99% of the people out there use whatever they have on their laptop/office desk etc. They wouldn't want to bring their keyboards to work.

Then you have those people who bring their aircraft carrier logitechs to CC.

Together, we are the 1%. 1% might be a too high percentage.

As i never used other brands before, i am very satisfied with it. Maybe have'nt been poisoned by others YET. weighs about 1kg. They changed quite abit from the previous keycool87. The direction keycaps is not that ugly printed, and the keyboard stand is rubberized so it wont slip even when u tilt. the rubber feet is also larger. one thing i dont like is the 'keycool' printed on the spacebar!! and i dont dare to change it cos i may break it LOL. I talked too much =P

It isn't too easy to break the spacebar actually. brows.gif

2nd, practice make perfect. icon_idea.gif

BTW, if you feel like your spacebar is working perfectly smooth/squeakless, then I suggest you better don't touch(remove) it.

As for FC700R, help me to spread the woods, it's still not available in malaysia for now. mainly due to some discussion between me and leopold.

I'm hoping to have a revision where we can have a normal spacebar stem distance that are compatible with Filco and others keycap.(i want to install my custom keycap on leopold keyboard vmad.gif )

They have a Blue LED for that same keyboard,
You can select different LED for the keyboard, Green White Blue Red Purple,
but you cannot change the keyboard's LED color after buying it.

If you are good at soldering,
you can take out the LED from the PCB board,
then change them to the color you want.

Is there no alternative than changing the LED? Btw nowdays most of gaming peripherals especially mice like steelseries sensei, Razer mamba have the option to change the LED color. Usually they have an option for 16M color via provided software which shud be fun to do. So is there some trick behind this kind of technology? can we apply it to the mecha keyboard instead of changing the LED one by one?

Added on August 14, 2012, 6:18 pmBtw where can i find a good keycap puller coz the ducky one is not so practical to use as it can damage n scratch the keycaps and why the hell they made keycaps puller like that btw shakehead.gif

I think that one they have RGB LEDs to make up all kind of colours, then use reflector to reflect the light rays evenly... I think Alienware keyboard also uses this method... Not sure

Not sure if Cyclone is selling the Leopold keypuller alone...

I want to buy Razer BlackWidow. probably use it for gaming only. is it good? or should I buy a more expensive keyboard/different brands? my budget would be around USD 100 - 150.

thanks in advance

As far as I know, PBT material is not capable of transparency. That's why all backlit board are equipped with ABS translucent key caps.

same goes for double shot key caps.. where only ABS material can be easily made into.

in short

Strengths:
ABS - Cheap, capable of translucent, capable of double shot
PBT - Durable, high heat resistant

Weakness:
ABS - less durable, low heat resistant
PBT - expensive, non translucent, not capable of double shot.

oh sorry i didnt noticed your reply.
-probably with backlit,
-either black or red cherry mx since from what i read on 1st page is they are more suitable for gaming (?),
-i dont really care about brand as long the keyboard works perfectly and
-it would be better if the keyboard dont have that "clicking" sound. it can be a little bit irritating if i use it during night sweat.gif

Bro backlited PBT keycaps actually exist which I oso red mostly ppl say quite impossible. U can check the Deck legend keyboard, they made a backlited kb wif PBT keycaps  thumbup.gif especially the model deck ice one..

oh, the deck legend.. I totally forgot about that.

QUOTE(afroboy @ Aug 15 2012, 07:19 AM)
oh ya im looking for a mechanical gaming keyboard. i have one crappy keyboard so i probably want to spend some money for a decent keyboard. thanks for the suggestion. probably i'll try corsair k90. 1 more thing, why people seem to "hate" razer? is it because the brand is overpriced or what? i'm quite new to this pc world.  notworthy.gif
*
every product has its own pros and cons, but on different fields.

the worst cons for a product is QC issue... and yes, Razer blackwidow fall short on that.

and... seriously, corsair boards are too expensive in Malaysia.. and their ESC row are not even mechanical.. shakehead.gif

Red on white, Thin fonts are alright.
For red on black, need thicker fonts to look nice.

oh sorry i didnt noticed your reply.
*
If u don want clicking sound juz avoid Blue switch while Red n Black switch thus will not produce clicking sound but if u bottomed it sure it will make sound doh.gif For backlit I think Gigabyte osmium n x-armor shud be nice nod.gif but if want some macro go for corsair k90 or Cooler master storm trigger.

Yes you can.
Register at KBDMania, and wait for announcement.
As soon as the group buy is open, put in your name.

Now you gotta find someone to help you pay him with a korean bank account, and that person would have to help ship the item to you.

Nope.
All my korean sourced stuff, either the group buy organizers were kind enough to ship internationally and take paypal. Or I have to ask people to help. Many thanks to them.
