Hi, i was advised by some roadies that sram components were more easily replace-able then shimano. Is this true?

From what i was told its like when you need to change a shimano component, you gotta change it all in one shot whereas for sram you can change part for part without needing to change the whole thing altogether.
And that this is only true for Malaysia...

Can someone help verify this is complete bs or the truth about shimano.

Thanks in advance!

with the exception of Di2... there is no such thing... both in upgrade and replacing failed parts...the only real problem is SRAM is becoming more easily available in the market compared to shimano if you are looking to replace a failed part (i think, personally) might not be true depending on which bike shop you frequent more...

if you were to say converting from sram to shimano or shimano to sram.. then there is some truth in that as SRAM has 1:1 actuation meaning jumping ship to either side requires you to change more than 1 part.. shifter, rear derailleur at least to make shifting work... as opposed to say upgrading a 105 shift lever to ultegra only needing the shift lever itself...

hmnn, yeah true too, i guess it will depend on which bike shop being frequented more.

I'm still deciding between cannondale supersix 3 and specialized tarmac sl4-mid-compact.

Both are shimano ultergra....only that the supersix 3 is cheaper by a bit.

I'm more worried about the smoothness of the ride. I've tried the caad10 and i'm not sure if its the msian road quality or that the vibrations felt is just a bit too much....yet to actually try the supersix and i doubt gh will let me trial run their bikes haha...

Tarmac SL4 expert looks ok....i guess its just being all chinky and that the no.4 bit on its name doesnt make it sound so good given the number of ppl dying from road accidents @.@

don't be superstitious... if you say like that.. wouldn't supersix sound like supersick?

you can't expect a plush ride from a road bike.. however much vertical compliance i tell you either one has now.. it is still going to be no less that a whole load of rattling on the roads... malaysian road ain't the best.. but you are not actually riding on cobblestones everyday are you?

if you are the type who worried about support or brands changing hands... specialize will have a bigger support background having distributed by gin huat... similarly, i think nathan has been carrying cannondale for quite some time and doesn't look to be ditching it soon.. both are fairly good bikes... end of the day, you have to decide which one you like better based on value , looks and overall feel...

if you want a more comfortable bike.. specialize has a range called the roubaix which is made of the cobbles.. that has some funky zertz dampers to dampen road vibrations (how much is hard to quantify)... but at the same time you lose some stiffness along with it... which is expected...

hmm.gif supersick sounds a bit cooler but yah haha (kidding)

anyways, you make perfect sense as usual....only last bit is just actually trying the bike which neither will allow. Guess i'll have to decide on value, looks and the after sales services offered. nod.gif

Hopefully i'll get to ride with you all soon once i get my road bike icon_rolleyes.gif

test mounting it in the shop floors yes, putting on pedals and letting you out on the road for a few cranks...no chance....

best is to find your buddies bike with almost the same size and geometry and try their bikes to replicate the feel...

if your are going for specialize and thinking of sticking with them for future repairs, upgrades... think you better get a sram equipped bike... gin huat is one of malaysias sram distributors... i don't see much shimano stuff in their shop

Anyone here climbed Fraser Hill alone to and fro? Just wanna share my experience..the climb on the 1 way route up to Fraser was so far the most extreme I've tried. Well I've tried Genting before but that was a very short one (from Goh Tong to Awana). It's a mind battle throughout the 8km uphill, I think the gradient is kinda like when you go from RNR Sempah towards HOA (the short climb at the RNR there), only that it was a solid 8km. My 32T is well utilized anyway and my heart rate was in a comfortable range thanks to the cassette.

The descend route however is very very technical compared to Sempah, and consists of a couple of short climbs, rough pavements and slippery at certain places thanks to a landslide debris. I couldn't help but to smile and sped down real fast..among other thing is because I'm afraid as I'm the only one descending with no other people around.

One lesson learnt I've had is not to descend it alone, and don't ever tried to push hard when you are a first timer on any route you unfamiliar with. I Nearly end up in a very deep gutter when I overshoot a sweeping left corner (For those familiar, it's the left hand corner after a steep climb just before the end of the descend at the T junction)

My rear tire skidded towards the right and front tires to the right side while my body is going left, kinda like drifting) and I'm an inch away from getting into the gutter...Huhu..

So I spent the 30km descend to KKB with a very slow ride...recovering from a what could be a near death accident...pheww

But I'll conquer tHat hill again one day! It was my last ride here, will be migrating oversea very soon...1000km on my months old Merida..it has made me a better and fitter person..brought me to so many places.....it will be my training bike.

SL4 here i comeeee tongue.gif

i don't remember frasers is as steep as any part of genting... much like sempah most of the way...i did until gap only lar during the time when it was alternating traffic up frasers...

genting is solid 8-10% all the way with pitches upwards to 20% at places leh...especially the lower slopes from the 1st pondok police...

solitary rides must always remember you are without help... you have a phone with you and that's all... help is always going to be remote even if you can reach it by phone.. so, think of safety when riding alone and not do stupid things like flying down a mountain like a pro downhiller bombing down a technical trail... no one is to help you if you were to copulate with a tree or decide to camp in a longkang...

and if shit is not bad enough that you crash... your phone might also leave you in the event of a crash meaning you are majorly "screwed upside down and inside out" especially when you fall down a ravine and cannot climb back up... you have to wait for babi hutan to come and rescue you by then...

me likes babi hutan...

Owh and you should try the 8km climb from Gap to clock tower. It is steep. Like really steep. Making me wonder are those top 5 in Strava leader board really riding a bike and not a motorbike. So fast and strong. Like Babi hutan... tongue.gif

*my experience I told above is for the 8km gap-top of Fraser...the KKB-gap is similar like Sempah..but with more distances
