if the car is idle far too long in massive jam /traffic light, we should engage the gear to 'N'.  Isn't right?

That's the way suppose to take care the DSG mechatronic IMO

usually i just put it to P and handbrake if at the traffic lights too long.
never really like using N, once almost kiss a car coz it was in N doh.gif

I think you are right, no wonder when I engage 'N', there is always symbol of brake shown, I should have depress brake when in 'N' mode. Or else engage parking handbrake, then set to 'P'.

In summary, there are two options:

1) Parking Brake then 'P' Parking
2) 'N' Neutral and Brake

I always engage 'P' only then pull the parking brake, how to change this habit from previous auto transmission?

Any tips to enlighten me to change this bad habit onto DSG is very much appreciated. smile.gif

Erm me too. 2 questions:
1. When starting engine, I always just start it, press and hold pedal brake , release hand brake and then shift to D, release pedal brake and drive. Does the instruction means that I need to press the pedal brake too before I start the engine?

2. Upon reaching my destinations, I hold pedal brake and shift to P then pull the hand brake. Does this make a difference from the 'proper' way shown above?

I understand that hand brake and pedal brake work differently. But I am not sure the rationale behind the instructions, is the purpose merely to (a) ensure that the car is absolutely at a stand still when starting engine and when shifting to P, or; (b) it makes a difference between using the hand brake or pedal brake when starting engine/shifting to P.

Sorry for making this so clinical, but I just want to be very sure. Thanks guys!

On question 1, I always press the brake pedal before start, and make sure all the indicator lights are off before start, if I am not wrong, if you do not press the brake pedal, there's an indicator light shown.

On question 2, as frosti3 explained few posts above, the DSG mechanism is to pull the parking brake before engaging P, I will follow, but problem is to keep reminding myself to follow this correct sequence, sometimes, when I am in hurry, I tends to forgot...

Also, I noticed when pull parking brake and engage P, then when I release the brake pedal, the green indicator sign of brake pedal will shown again.

My question is, do we always need to press brake pedal, even when we pull parking brake and at 'P' mode especially during idling of massive traffic jam?

Hope sifu can enlighten more in depth, thanks in advance

Erm sorry but I don't think you answered my que. in his link he mentioned that on starting engine it's important to have any brakes engaged, either hand brake or pedal brake. So it means that as long as the car is held stand still on engine start up its fine? (I understand that you mentioned the brake indicator will light up after you inserted the key, I am suspecting that the car doesn't detect the hand brake but only the pedal brake. Hence my series of question. Since as you also pointed out, putting at P with hand brake the brake indicator will still be light up. It just doesn't feel very intuitive, if we need to wait in the car for a period of time in P, it means we're supposed to hold the pedal brake? Since this is unlikely, hence I suspect that P with hand brake is fine even if there is a brake indicator, and it's fine to start up with only the hand brake up even the brake indicator is lid and lastly my least confident guess is that it's okay to shift to P with just holding the pedal brake).

Thus my questions was to confirm these. And yes, I'd like to find out what's best to do with the gear (and whether to use pedal brake or hand brake) while we got stuck in a traffic jam too.
Thanks.

Right, I think we just follow the instruction, as long as the feet brake indicator appeared, just hold the feet brake (either N or P with hand brake) for the safe side on DSG.

Okay...haha. Aih we bought this car to torture ourselves. >_<

N/P modes with pedal brake everyday. I will get a disproportionately strong right leg soon. Hope that VW can conduct classes on the correct way to take care of the DSG.

Thanks for the replies.

Hmm... why can't VW make it automatically brake if more than 3 seconds idling when it's at P and N mode, if German are smart enough ...

without torturing our leg (right) lol tongue.gif

Not sure on polo sport. But for my polo it would auto lock after above certain speed, 20-30 i suspect...
try leave it unlocked and then drive above the speed and see if it is locked.

One thing though, even if it is locked, you can still open the door from inside.
I've even tried opening the door when driving ... still can be opened.
This is their safety feature.

If you have kids, child lock is an option/workaround.

Hope that helps

Eh but I had the same error and it was the dsg's prob.
Luckily the warranty still covers the battery lol
