Japanese for me, because I've learnt mandarin since small, it is probably hard, but we don't find it all that hard cuz we're used to it.

Got to ask those that learns it when they're adults.

I haven't been contributing here lately as I've just started school again after sometime and things and setting up me 'life' again has been hectic. I'm actually going to take a Japanese exam in an hour.

Well what I want to say is you can study Japanese yourself from book if you're determined. It doesn't take alot of effort, I didn't study like 1 hour everyday or anything like that, I just stuck to it. I didn't even watch that much anime or dramas either. I'm not very good at languages, my mom speaks Chinese and till today I still can't speak it. My dad speaks Tamil and I don't know a word. But I've managed to teach myself an equivalent of 2 years worth of college Japanese, which is about a little more than JLPT N3 I think. When I first started college I had enough vocab to hold small talk with my Japanese lecturers over lunch. So, if you're not staying near a language school, or you don't have access to any Japanese friends, just pick one of those learn Japanese in XXX days and get started. Make the first step!

I learned kanji from scratch with James Heisig's Remembering the Kanji. This method teaches you the just meaning of the kanji without the readings. It shows you how complex kanji can be broken down into simple radicals. I learned more than 2000 kanji with this method and can remember more than 1500 kanji by heart (I'm not chinese btw)

This method has as many critics and admirers, so try it out for yourself and find out if it works for you or not.

If you already know the meaning of the kanji and would like to know the readings, just get yourself a good kanji dictionary like Kodansha's Kanji Learner's Dictionary or the 2001 Kanji Odyssey series. Both of them available at Kino

You can easily learn hiragana and katakana in 1 week. By then you can already read simple children's story books

Kanji is the most interesting aspect of Japanese.

Foreigners are the ones who complain about it the most because it's not alphabetic. Alphabets are easy, although hiragana and katakana are not really alphabets they are close enough to be easy to those used to alphabetic languages. Kanji requires lots of memorisation and work and I find joy in learning it. Helps me in skimming through sentences too. Pity that the Koreans do not see Chinese characters the same way the Japanese do.

Hi, i have some question hope someone can explain :
1) Are there any rule when the second word attached to made a new word the pronuntiation add the extra "
example : 説 originally pronouce as つ but some time when it combine to become new word the pronuntiation change to つ, do we have to memorize it for each combination or they are ONLY certain condition/rule it add extra "
小説(しょうつ)
演説(えんつ)

2) For , how come sometimes the "ku" voice is read as "k" only
example :
学生(がくせい, i think japanese spell it as "gaksei" instead of "gakusei")

3) Do we need to memorise/understand the Kanji reading of ON reading and Kun Reading?
Currently i just memorise the JLPT/N vocab reading, not really sure do we need to care on the those ON reading and Kun Reading
