Guys,
in the medical field, once you graduate you can choose to specialize... eg becoming a surgeon, physician, paediatrician. you can remained 'unspecialize' and remain a humble General Practioner(GP), because in Malaysia you can be a GP without any specialization. The you can sub specialize even further eg cardiologist, neurosurgeon etc. These are specialization above the specialization after graduating. You can still further specialize eg paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon...etc but that will only be for the few of us...
with regards to graduating in Msia or outside, I think the prospect of specializing is good in Msia or even outside, just that you need to have the drive to do it. Believe me guys, when you see secondary school mate who did business becoming the COO of Affin Bank, and you are still struggling to finish your subspecialization, then you understand....this is the truth,
As this is topics is for medical students or potential students, just know that medicine is never about money (even some of my friends are earning millions) or glamour, it is a calling that demand sacrifices from you you never imagine possible!
Godspeed...

How many COO are there in Affin Bank? Are you sure he did business? Looking at the other side of the fence is always greener.

Did you know how many years that guy need to reach that position and how much effort he needs to go there and what special qualities he had proven to make it up there?

Be it an uneducated guy or well qualified guy, those who make it possess certain qualities that stands out from the crowd. And they deserve it!

there in lies the difference in perspective about how doctors are trained, in sharp contrast to all other professions...

we look at wonder at the successful ones, in any profession.....the one in thousands who become ceo/coo/cfos.....or the one in a million lim goh tong....

but we (ie the lay population, patients, the medical profession) expect every one of the doctors to be competent and 'successful'...

but there is another big difference....the lay population also look for the prima-donna amongst doctors, (the 'best' cardiologist, plastic surgeon, etc).....but the profession wants all their brothers to be competent, team players, mentors.....NOT prima-donnas.....

For the locals, from a BFM podcast by Dr. Ismail Merican recently, he said there were 11 from IPTA and 22 from IPTS.

On another note, while speaking with a doctor the other day, was informed that new specialists setting up clinics outside hospitals have difficulties in getting "rights" (not sure this is the right word) now to use the hospital facilities for their own patients but instead can only do referrals.

Previously, such specialists have access rights to practically all the private hospitals in town.

Looks like competition is building up from all angles and isn't this good for the patients?

The bolded part, do you mean one can 'subspecialize' after being a general practitioner? I always see 'GPs' in malaysia with dipl (specialty) beside their MBBS qualification. I'm not sure what is that to be honest. For eg Dipl (cardiology). Does that mean the GP/internist did a course/attachment in cardiology for x number of mo/yrs to get this cert?

he means subspecialising after general specialisation...not after being a gp....

this is the british system....the americans, and some europeans do it differently....they dive straight into sub- and super-specialisation immediately....

A little clarification.

At CUCMS, there's a side note saying

"Period of recognition extended from 31/12/2010."

What does that supposed to mean?

Is there actually a recognition or?

Thanks smile.gif

I thought with their accreditation fiasco years ago, they are given year by year recognition for the next few years rather than full recognition without restriction?

Oh well, again this shows how blatant the rules can be bent and etc.

China's 2 unis are even more confusing:
"19/3/2013 - 18/3/2016"

Its a change in ownership with a new crony. What happen in the past not important, we look to the future and try to be No. 1 blah blah blah!

I really need to familiarize with the pathways in Malaysia. I'm guessing the OZ is with the British system? That sounds more like what is happening here eg - general training program - exams - specialize - sub-specialize. I heard SG is heading down the same pathway as US, eg after internship they can dive into specialization/subspecialization?

Wonder if it is worthwhile doing UMSLE for those who're studying and planning to work here in Australia.

my friends over there have asked and they do for now but not so sure in few years time. I know there are two problems to address : the conversion tests to be qualified for the dental council and the immigration department whether they wud give PR to non-local grads
