Thanks for yr reply!! It seems like there is so much issue about medicine and also, do u mind share yr experience about surgical skills? Are u scared before going into medical school? Or is there any case where yr coursemate almost get fainted and try to regain their courage? Lol, what I mean is usually can we cope up this affraidness?.....So currently where are u working now? biggrin.gif  ,

First of all, I'm not a doctor biggrin.gif

Anyhoo, faiting is the probably least of your worries. A lot of medical students actually suffer from depression and anxiety. Both from the expectations to do well (most of my colleagues were top scorers in SPM and arent used to being "average" in class) and not knowing what comes next after finishing their degree (6 months - one year of unemployment). Then there's financial issues if you're not sponsored and what happens if you suddenly lose interest but spent a few hundred Ks already... and add to that, the pressure to pay PTPTN loan after graduation.

I think malignant consultants are scarier than blood biggrin.gif OK,. Even O&G MOs are scarier than blood. But why be afraid of blood? In the labour room you'll be dealing with blood, amniotic fluid, poop and pee all at once biggrin.gif

If you have time, do read up Do No Harm by Henry Marsh, When the Air Hits Your Brain by Frank T. Vertosick Jr. and Complications by Atul Gawande.

And find out more about other area that dont require much hands-eye coordination such as dermatology, radiology, endocrinology, infectious disease, psychiatry, rehab medicine, sports medicine, medical genetics, occupational medicine, clinical research, hospital admin, public health etc.

You actually earn alot as a FY in scotland if youre banded.

I think banded jobs are more in bigger hospitals.

And I was told that working in Aberdeen can get about 500 to 1000 pounds per month extra compared to an average size hospital in Glasgow.

I think F1s can work in the same hospital that they're attached to, IF there are locum spots. I could be wrong. I think one can get £25/hour, but of course less after taxes.

Quite a good rate indeed. Is your relative doing locum now?

When many doctors going for Xmas and New Year leave, there is a need for additional assistance. laugh.gif

the bigger the hospital = more higher banded jobs. (my friend in aberdeen has like few 50% banded jobs. Its stressful but he earns loads)

I had the impression Glasgow has quite a few big tertiary centres.

Hi guys,

I would like to seek opinions about going research after mbbs. Which type of master do I need to take? What type of research available for a doctor? Is such master programme competitive? (As I heard surgical specialization quite competitive, limited place and need to pass many exams)

Thanks.

Can define what you meant by research?

Wet research that includes physically handling specimens or dry research with collecting and analysing data?

Check out BMedSc in Monash.

Erm, I might say both, but I quite unsure yet, I wish that I can research on treatments for the betterment of the society.

Actually, I am in a dilemma in choosing medicine and biomedicine, I feel that medicine has a wider job prospect than biomedicine. Will u encourage me to take medicine if my ultimate goal is to become a researcher? For me, I might prefer research more than contact with patients, but I feel that the clinical skills that I get will definitely help me in my future research.

Recently, I had encountered a term "physician-scientist" which I am interested to venture in. Does anyone know about it? How different is it between physician and physician-scientist in Malaysia?

Back to the point, which masters programme should I opt for if I intend to go for research? Will it be competitive to get into it? I think I am the type of person that likes to discover new things rather than performing similar procedure regularly. So most probably I will shine away those popular master programme, such as surgeon.

Anyone who has any thoughts about it can also comment pls. Thanks smile.gif

Was informed by relative that they are getting emails asking whether interested to work as locum due to winter crisis resulting in bad flu and apparently the ineffective flu vaccine. She's not keen because she said newbies will be typing a lot of discharge work sweat.gif hmm.gif

Research is very in demand in Malaysia so no harm going for it. The MOH is actively pushing research to be done anyway. You can always take on a generic science masters of your choice once you are done with your HO. There are many areas to work at if you are keen on research outside of clinical settings. The most popular would be CRC or NIH. You don't need a masters at the early stages to conduct simple research.

HAHA! Smart move. Medical consultants were called in, some in the midst of their NY Eve's dinner...they were not happy. But the F1s were very impressed at how everything was sorted though the night. Asked relative if NHS is still the best, the answer is still a resounding yes. Sigh!

Not a game changer...don't see this going anywhere.... although under kpj, training still done under Moh facilities....it is not possible to train people in the private setting....

Not sure why anyone will want to pay so much money, at the same time no income, working free.....to "train" in Moh hospitals with peers doing it for free while getting pay and advancement in civil service....

Yes it did. You really believe that?

We are talking about surgical speciality training here....not medical students....you should know how surgeons are trained....

Could these programmes be targetting 'doctors' from African continent , MiddleEast and South Asia ?
.....exploring work opportunities out of home country
... but gets into recognition issue thereafter with overseas medical boards.

Not sure if it's a scam though.
