Yes it did. You really believe that?

We are talking about surgical speciality training here....not medical students....you should know how surgeons are trained....
*
Of course. Maybe they'll follow the university hospital model - cheaper procedures for patients who agrees to be operated on with a trainee.

HAHA! Smart move. Medical consultants were called in, some in the midst of their NY Eve's dinner...they were not happy. But the F1s were very impressed at how everything was sorted though the night. Asked relative if NHS is still the best, the answer is still a resounding yes. Sigh!

If a comparison is made between UK and ours, then no doubt UK win liao. Maybe still early days until after completion of F2.

That's what you would expect with super high income tax, 20% VAT and a national health insurance financing scheme.

Red dot kind of no 'rural' posting ...
Uk might be moving like a nomad post F2 , just speculating.

If red dot happens, it probably will not be for years. Who knows.
What do you mean by "nomad post F2"? All I know is they will need to apply for CT jobs at the end of F2.

But read about the winter pressure crisis, and I can only imagine it's hell for the healthcare workers and the patients.

Am on psych now actually, yeah there’s loads of psych. It’s a pretty chilled job with no on calls so it’s a good break. What rotations do you have in mind?
*
Haha, do you do GIM on call when you're on your psych rotation? I think they do in St. Helen's but I'm not sure if it's just that trust or it's a deanery thing. I'm looking to have one general surg (colorectal/UGI/HPB, not breast) or vascular surg + EM/ITU at least. I'm not too fussed about the rest as long as they're more general like geriatrics. Although I would wanna stay clear of psych but I think that's pretty inevitable for NW tongue.gif

Do you happen to know anything about Preston? There's a good chance I might go there if I can't get into St. Helen's cause of the jobs they offer.

Lots of opinioms on twitter feed...very interesting comments. There’s also some crowdjustice thing happening to get an independent legal opinion on her case, over £58k pledged of target £75k in less than 48 hours. The repercussions will be interesting.

Is your plan to do surgery in the future? I would recommend trying to get the specialty you want to do in F2 because you’ll be put on the SHO rota and will get more experience.

No that depends on the trust, whiston psych trainees do medical on calls and Southport ones do surgical on calls. But the trainees in royal and aintree don’t.

Gen surgery you would be able to get anywhere as that’s standard. In aintree A&E is compulsory so it could be a good choice too.

I’ve got a friend who works in Preston. It seems okay but they don’t do nights as an F1 which is a bit odd and probably not the best for experience.

Yes, there's a lot of interesting discussions going on among doctors in training on social media at the moment.

Oh, that's a shame. I was looking forward to do nights in FY1. I don't know yet if I want to do surgery, for now I'm interested in either the CST or ACCS route, then again my perception might change once I actually start doing the job, hence my intention to do more general rotations. I guess it all comes down to my SJTs haha, I've considered Aintree and will certainly not put Preston as my 1st choice if luck is on my side. Thanks again, that was really helpful.

You get to to rank hospitals after you get your score so that will help you narrow down your choices. Good luck! Just ask if you think of any more questions

Long hours of ‘tagging’ must change with the times

HOUSEMANSHIP is just around the corner for me and 3,000 other medical graduates. I hope this will shed some light on what we are about to go through.

When housemen start their practice in hospitals, they will have to undergo a period called “tagging” whereby they will be attached to a senior houseman and will be trying to pick up basic procedures and documentation, where things are in the ward, and start seeing patients.

On average the day begins at 7am and ends at 10pm, but you’re expected to be there at 5am. To add to that you’re at the mercy of medical officers and specialists because sometimes you have to be there longer. Thus on average it is 15 hours a day.

We are expected to function at our best for two weeks, with just one day of rest in between.

And depending on the schedule of the specialist who will be supervising the housemen, they may have to do that for up to three weeks before they can be assessed and left to start their eight hour shifts independently.

Ahh.. the Tagging period... such 'heaven'... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Word of advice for him...

If he is posted in any one of the major referral hospitals in Sabah...

...be warned and be prepared to be ridiculed and treated as a Houseman by the specialists/consultants there, they will look down on peninsular-trained new MOs versus Sabah/Sarawak-trained MOs unless he is able to prove to them that he is competent and at-par with their own trained MOs...

Previously as a houseman, I watched how some of the new MOs from peninsular Malaysia getting scolded and humiliated during rounds by their specialists/consultants due to their inability to 'adapt' or handle themselves as MOs - as if they are no different from HOs... These new MOs too have tagging period and assesment...   biggrin.gif

Have you got the experience watching new MOs perform in GHs who graduated from overseas? How are they treated by the specialists/consultants?

My niece was about to start as a freshie MO in a GH. She’s exempted from doing housemanship in Msia since she’s completed her F1 in UK. She’s understandably anxious and apprehensive to commence work in a Msian GH.

Which GH? It doesn't really matter whether the new MO graduated from where... it is where the new MO did their HOship that the consultants/Specialists want to know.

I have yet to see how a new MO (UD43) that directly entered Government service being treated by the consultants/specialists.

Aah... if she got posted to Sabah/Sarawak, she would have gained the upper hand for selection into Masters program in IPTA... Plus the lifetime experience of working there...
