My relative is there doing the final year. The locked-in fee 5 years ago was 28500 pounds per year and can cover 2 years at Queens.

What a relief to be able to write "final year"...for me anyway. LOL. Got your air tickets for July?

....... and majority of UK medical schools require A or A* in A-level Chemistry ...... kind of non-negotiable.

From reading The Student Room ,UK locals usually disclosed hospital attachment and volunteering activities in their application. For Malaysians ,these are not so easy to obtain...are they important ?

Not yet. Not sure how many days off I can take. And I am still looking at doing some traveling....not sure whether before or after. I would love to have 1 month to move around but I guess 2 weeks may be the max.

Shadow family and/ or friends in the profession, and be able to write about the experience in an interesting manner, I think.

Prepping another relative? 😀

What are the current competitive UKCAT and A level scores to secure offers from UK schools ?  Is SPM/ O level result and medical related experiences critical ?
*
each medical school has their own criteria to how they accept applicants, which can be found on each of their website.
As above, thestudentroom is a good place to ask current students, other applicants to see how strong your application is/how likely it is to get in.

A levels is just a formality, in a sense 3A's is the min req (some require A*, A in chemistry and etc). it does not have any impact on how strong your application is.

SPM/O levels results has no value whatsoever, except the English 1119 component which might exempt you from IELTS.
Voluntary work + medical experience is critical but its not only about the amount you did and wrote in your personal statement, but what did you get out of it overall and reflected over it.

yes, relatively harder in a sense, its the norm for them to go for volunteering and medical shadowing experiences.
However, this should not deter you from seeking out opportunities if youre passionate in it.

UK medical student here originally from Malaysia (and was also a regular in the Medicine sub of Thestudentroom). A good UKCAT score would be 680+ I would say, but since the UK government imposed a strict quota for international applicants, competition for shortlisting is more intense so a higher UKCAT score would be safer. Aim for at least 700 or above or else stay away from UKCAT heavy unis. EACH UNIVERSITY HAS DIFFERENT SELECTION CRITERIA, MAKE SURE YOU VISIT ALL THE MEDICINE ADMISSION PAGES OF RESPECTIVE UK UNIVERSITIES BEFORE YOU COMMIT.

Work experience in hospitals and/or volunteering is almost compulsory for UK applicants here. Admission tutors want to see that you are really dedicated in pursuing the profession. It's probably harder in Malaysia to find hospital work experience, but volunteering in orphanages, old people's homes, hospices are equally as good. You will have to take the initiative to find these opportunities. It doesn't have to be hands on, it could just be cleaning/making tea/chatting to the residents there. Make sure you talk about your volunteering in your personal statement and reflect on the experience by writing what you learnt.

No wonder my niece got an invitation to apply for that housemanship in Singapore when she graduated last year.

I manage to get attachment at private hospitals for my relatives after their pre-u. Let's say over a 3 months period, you will be shadowing 3 different specialists. One of them who also worked earlier as a porter for about 2 months managed to learn quite a lot when one of the anesthetist teaches him in the surgery room and also got the chance to observe surgeries.

Its really not difficult if you submit in the request at least 6 months before the desired training dates.

My last hope was Yayasan Khazanah but they no longer send medical students abroad sad.gif but the YK representative said Newcastle Uni do send some third or fourth years to the branch in UK < can anyone confirm if this is true

there are already a glut of doctors, and it will get worse, so there are no more scholarships overseas...

you also do not qualify for the 9a+ scholarship....

there are 2 branch campus medical schools where you can opt to do a semester of even a year in the parent campus....this will be an exchange, NOT a transfer....ie you cannot transfer your studies there, and you will need to return to the msia campus to complete your studies....

It won't be an issue if he plan to go to Singapore or do HO in UK before being an MO in rural Aussie/NZ.

still lurking here?...i thought you are way past that....

both monash malaysia and numed degrees are not recognised in singapore...

while the numed degree is recognised by gmc, there is no option to do fy in uk at this point...whether brexit will make a difference, remains to be seen...

monash msia degree is recognised by amc/ahpra...and every year a few graduates do get intern jobs in oz...but it gets more difficult...i don't know of any that got jobs this year, because even those graduating in oz itself are not guaranteed jobs

the profession of doctors is under the dibp watch list, and may possibly be removed from the sol either this year, or next year (july is their new cycle month)....because there is no more shortage of doctors, and curtin starts their first intake this year....if that happens, then not only monash msia graduates cannot get jobs, but international students graduating from onshore oz med schools will also not be able to get a work visa to work after graduating....

I have family members studying medicine in UK so I still keep it in my mind.

I was thinking he said he's going to UK. Numed obviously not recognised anywhere else. Expensive too. Although I heard Africa always accepting laugh.gif

I think he is better to study as a radiographer if he is interested in healthcare.

Isn't there an understanding in place that those West Malaysians completing housemanships in East Malaysia gets priority in being allocated MO slots in W.M big cities/hospitals of their choice ?
