1. clean your filter. use the water from your tank or aged water.
2. the yellowish water may cause by tannins. do you have driftwood in your tank?
No there is no DW in the tank.. I moved all my fishes and plants to a temporary tank.. no filter for them at the moment.. I cleaned out the tank already, but definitely would require some changes to the filter I believe.. When I washed the tank, the glasses has algae stuck on it but not obvious, the surface felt smooth, unlike what it should be with glass..

dunno why suddenly all my cardinal and neon tetras dropping dead one by one. Last weekend i put some charcoal in the filter. only rinsed it a bit to remove dirt. Could this be the culprit?

maybee... charcoal may have some chemical it absorb and re-release it back to the water... immediate remove the charcoal do 50% water change and observe if all go well then it is the charcoal if not your fish hate you hehe

80%, not too extreme ka? Fish can get shocked if their water parameter suddenly got big change.. Max i dare to change is 50%, then After that 10% wc every day until no more death...

Whats done is done... I hope that theres no more death in your tank, that ur remaining fish go back healthy... smile.gif

Hi, people, I need advise.

I've an 8 ft tank which I plan to keep a fish that does not allow people to put their hands into the tank. It's an aba aba knifefish. As the tank is going to be a divider in my parents' house, they want it to look presentable, meaning it needs to have some greens in it.

My experience in keeping aquarium plants = 0

My fish likes to play around with the substrate, moving the sand around making dunes in its tank. If there are small pieces of stone, it will try to "throw" it out of the tank. Hence, only heavy, flat pieces of stone are placed in its tank.

I'm not planning to have a CO2 system or any fancy planted tank equipment. The lighting used will be natural light or basic LED.

I need advise on plants that are very, very low maintenance:

1. not planted into substrate
2. low lighting
3. low CO2
4. slow growing (So I don't need to trim it often)
5. Hardy

So far I've been told to try java ferns, java moss and anuibus.
Are there any others?

And does moss clog up the filtration system easily? It's a sump type filtration. If not, I plan to make a moss wall.

Thank you.

There will be river sand as substrate. I don't mind it moving the substrate around as it will suspend food/waste derbis, hence cleaning the tank.

There will be a big piece of driftwood and some flat rocks. But it needs some green to complete it, otherwise the tank will look kinda dead. I don't know if the fish will eat/destroy the plant. It's current tank is just river sand (and it looks really sad..)

I need simple plants that do not require planting in to substrate (ie. soil, sand, gravel...etc), like moss can be tied to the driftwood. But will it clog the filter? Will it grow too fast?

Help please.

For the moss wall, it will be 2.5ft x 2.5ft. Not 8ft..@_@ I am a super boob, okay. Wouldn't want to go extreme at first try. Later it may backfire and I'd have so much clean up work to do.

Hey guys, i need your help. Newbie here. biggrin.gif I was just wondering how to prevent the water in my tank from turning yellow.
why is it turning yellow anyways?
Is it because of the driftwood in it? hmm.gif

DW will leach tannin causing the water to be yellow for some time (days or months)

Its because of the tannin from your driftwood.. Did you boil it and soak in water for days before putting into ur tank?

but i bought the driftwood from the shop. it came with the plants attached to it. Wouldnt it be "clean" and free of tannins by then?
Also, are the tannins harmful?
i also recently added dwarf puffers to the tank and ive heard that they produce quite a bit of ammonia.
could that be the reason?

maybe you can try anubias and fern type of plant. but you need to tie it to the DW. and make sure the fish wont throw the DW out

calvin : some kind of hair algae i think. i have that usually after i add in the macro liquid fert. i like your filtration setup. may wanna add another filter soon. current is using a 1000l/hr cannister on a 200l tank. flow rate is very slow as it passes through chiller and diy co2 reactor.

thought of splitting it up to filter (new) to chiller and old filter to co2 reactor. it will have separate outlet and inlet due to different flow rate of filter.
