can't really find a good place to ask this, so I'll ask here.

planning on overclocking an i5k ivy, got a question on the ram. should I get 2x 8 GB sticks, 4x 4 GB sticks or 4x 8 GB sticks?

read all over the place that filling up all the DIMM slots affects overclock? got an MSI Z77 MPower, if that's relevant.

Older chipsets certainly had some issues with populated DIMMs, had to bump up vdimm, lower DRAM frequency or loosen timings. But this doesn't happen on Ivy, its memory sub-system has been reworked.

Generally populated DIMMs is harder to OC, but clock to clock as compared to none populated it is faster in performance. T-branch minimizes the skew between slots on the same channel thus higher clocking effectiveness.

The larger the capacity per stick, the harder the overclock. Seldom see people overclock with 8GB sticks but I got one kit of 4 X 4GB Team Xtreem 2600MHz which is working perfectly at rated specs on 4 DIMMs. They are able to clock 2800MHz at full bank too! nod.gif

However, if you chose to have more capacity instead of playability then 4 X 8GB would be fine.

oO. okay. so not too much of a con having a full bank.

guess now I just have to figure out whether I want 16 or 32. haha!

Full bank is not a problem for Ivy as long as your mobo/BIOS supports it and there's enough clearance between CPU cooler and the closest DIMM slot you would be fine.

Well done. Looks like your chip loves more voltage for 4.5. Try upping vCore to 1.3-1.35v, if your cooling still permit. One if the culprits is your mobo has a bad VRM quality, which results in high vCore.

1.365v during load or idle? If you are just increase CPU from stock clock to 4.6 without touching other settings such as RAM then insufficient vCore is the only suspect. So, try upping your vCore, notch by notch.

I couldnt see what vCore & load line calibration aka LLC are actually actually set perhaps you should try my advice above, increase your vCore.
Good luck!

The voltages could be adjusted better if I got time later.

That board doens't have a lot of the overclocking features of many of the higher-end boards including manual vCore adjustment & lack of power phase.

You might wanna go through THIS GUIDE for more overclocking tips on this board.

Although the CPU is 2600K, basically can be applied on 3770K as well.
