QUOTE(uhhwilliam @ Mar 20 2012, 06:16 PM) And I would assume I do have it, actually. People have been saying that since the 1980's and it is still going on strong. With the emphasis on enhanced oil recovery, they will need super reservoir engineers as well. By the time you graduate and get 10 years of experience in the local 0&G, you can become an expatriate and work in the middle easy where the reserve will last another 100 years. So don't worry about it.It's just a minute scare episode I had awhile, like what if I studied hard just to come out to a declining industry, what with growing environmental concerns etc etc. Malaysia is coming out with various plans to reduce carbon emissions too and stuff so it does provoke me abit I have to say. |

Hi guys, I am new to this forum and need a consultation or advice on my career. First, let me introduce my background, I am enrolled in Bachelor degree( E&E), and going to graduate soon in this year.
My situation is that i have job offers from ONG( halliburton-maintenance engineer) and also semicon (product engineer). It seems like very good but i having a hard time to decide which job/ field should i go. For ONG, if i was offer with field engineer, definitely i will choose it. So, i need some advice from you guys/senior/sifu here. I really appreciate your advices, opinions, sharings. |

Is that normal if I directly get a job offer (for interview) from HR (of a company)? I never deal with that company before. I thought usually head hunter doing this job? Job invitation sent to my personal email (maybe get my email add through JS?).

Like us we look for potential candidates either in linkedIn or through recommendation, than sent them an invite through HR. Agents fees can be astronomical. We avoid that most of the time. |

QUOTE(uhhwilliam @ Mar 20 2012, 10:59 PM) Okay, that's pretty reassuring. I can spend 4-6 years studying Petroleum Engineering with much lesser qualms n worries then. being a potential PE student, i'm suprised that you even pose the question...your lcourse consultant must be "reasurring" even if it dies in malaysia, it won't elsewhere... but we still got a good 35 years in the bag and more to come... go figure else u can join an already dying industry called electronics... QUOTE(Dagger69 @ Mar 21 2012, 08:12 AM) What is the job scope of a product engineer in a semicon industry and how about its career advancement? well it only stated that:Excellent career advancement and development Insurance and medical coverage programs Stock awards 2 months AWS Innovative and attractive recreation programs Btw, it seems like most of you guys prefer ONG field, but somehow if it possible for maintenance engineer in ONG can be as rock as field engineer because most of people choose ONG field just because of the high pay for field engineer position. |

QUOTE(BRC @ Mar 21 2012, 10:26 AM) do you know that a maintenance eng can be in field as well? Yups. This is going to be my first job, of coz i dont wan to choose the wrong field, hope to see the pros and cons in these fields. I am pretty sure u all know bout halliburton, and from what i heard is the chances for maintenance engineer to be on site/field is not high except when there is failure/brakedown of equip. So, if any of halliburton engineer can help me to get more clear on it(before i choose and sign any acceptance letter)? thanks ya.and not all field engineers get paid well... you said you got offered halli? thats one of the big daddies of O&G service providers... |

You are pro-active.It's easy to show them academic achievements with your resume and certificates. It's hard to show them streetwise + work ethics unless they give you the opportunity to work. In semicon, you prolly gonna get Senior position within 3 years - not like in O&G, 5 years minimum prolly is the average time for you to get Senior position. Difference between both industries, semicon a bit fluctuating as compared to O&G at some point. 2005-2008 was very bad for semicon industry. Now I see it is picking up. But again, same goes with O&G in Malaysia. 2010, 2011 to me was kinda slow. But 2012 seems exciting. I don't know this for sure. But do bear in mind when working for MNC, they tend to "right-size" the organization. Like WFT for example, they "right-sized" one whole dept. But if you work well, there's nothing to be worried about. |

Hey,congratulation for the job offer.Within the company i worked in,as far as i know,i never saw any maintenance engineer going to the field/offshore.The field engineer will work both in the field(and Base if not going to the rig) and maintenance engineer only at the base/warehouse.I am not exactly sure about Hal,but i guess should be similar to SLB.The problem with maintenance engineer position is that they only getting basic salary+any coefficient for that location as opposed to field engineer who get the same basic salary & coefficient but with field allowances when going offshore.Since the basic salary for engineer is high enough here(much more than Petronas or the other client company),so some people actually consider it as a good job,if you are planning to stay onshore and have better life. |
