Hi guys..I need advice here..

I got a offer job as a Pipeline Engineer(downstream) from a EPCC company doing pipeline industry specialist in HDD for Gas Malaysia (Petronas) and I am a fresh graduate from UM in Chemical Engineering. My questions are

1)Can I go for upstream industry after I gain experiences here?maybe about 2 years, then I plan to go for a bigger company n doing upstream jobs.

2)Or I just reject their offer and wait for upstream jobs offer which Im not sure when I will get the interview/jobs?
*
Congratulations! EPCC company is good. You can get your hands dirty during commissioning. smile.gif

Don't get discouraged. Try and try.

BTW, not all 3 pointers are bookworms and not all 2nd graders are street smart. Individual basis. biggrin.gif

It is a good time to join MMCOG as they have a couple of big projects now. I worked with Samarang team a couple of months back.

Added on March 13, 2012, 9:23 pmAnd MMCOG staffs were very nice.

SLB is hiring freshies. Depending on which manager, some managers will not let you go within the first 3 years. You can leave, but you need to pay.

How do you know?

Also, should freshies just apply for it through their website by sending in a resume or is there other better ways of doing so?
*
My jr peers who got into SLB recently told me that. But that doesn't mean SLB will hire freshies only. But most who got hired recently are freshies.

The only way I know to apply is via the website.

I see. Thanks.

I will graduate in few more months. Hence, I have started to apply for as much as I can.

Good. At the same time, try to get to know some people in the industry personally so that you will get better advice in choosing your career path.

*nods* Will do so, but seriously can't afford to be picky with the first job. Hopefully I will get more than one offer to compare and decide  blush.gif

To be honest & in my personal opinion, the course and university that you choose play more important part in getting your first job. Some average students from UTP can get hired by reputable companies easily as compared to other conventional universities' graduates.

Hmm. Kencana just called. starting about Rm2.3k fresh grad (im alright being considered fresh grad even though i got working experience in other non oil and gas operation). To add on I'm a first class student in uni and have achieved a number of awards. So is 2.3k below the market rate?

KHL is quite known for not paying high. Maybe things will change after the merge.

Thanks. But 2.3k? Hmmm

I think you should turn down the offer. RM2.3k is like the salarY of a fresh engineer in subcontractor company.

Thats what I feel. Oil and gas is exciting but alot of hard work and that i totally understand. But at 2.3k im thinking because of the long hours+offshore travelling when a stable office engineering job in kl, 5 days a week, can offer me 2.8k to above 3+k with benefits.
If I accept it itll be simply because of the job, not the pay.

I am the type that put the job first, money later kinda guy. I can't perform well if my mind keep thinking about financial constraint.

Mustve been you la. Who else was around to interview on Sat.
I also thought you (interviewer) mentioned recalling it to be 2.5k. But if now lower even more to 2.3k, then a little hard.
*
Hahaha interviewer and interviewee met in forum. @eandi, offer @echo higher laaa... Hahaha.

It's easy to show them academic achievements with your resume and certificates. It's hard to show them streetwise + work ethics unless they give you the opportunity to work.
*
That is why I think you deserve more than RM2.3k. You are pro-active.

Yups. This is going to be my first job, of coz i dont wan to choose the wrong field, hope to see the pros and cons in these fields. I am pretty sure u all know bout halliburton, and from what i heard is the chances for maintenance engineer to be on site/field is not high except when there is failure/brakedown of equip. So, if any of halliburton engineer can help me to get more clear on it(before i choose and sign any acceptance letter)? thanks ya.

Both industry are OK. In semicon, you prolly gonna get Senior position within 3 years - not like in O&G, 5 years minimum prolly is the average time for you to get Senior position. Difference between both industries, semicon a bit fluctuating as compared to O&G at some point. 2005-2008 was very bad for semicon industry. Now I see it is picking up. But again, same goes with O&G in Malaysia. 2010, 2011 to me was kinda slow. But 2012 seems exciting. I don't know this for sure.

But do bear in mind when working for MNC, they tend to "right-size" the organization. Like WFT for example, they "right-sized" one whole dept. But if you work well, there's nothing to be worried about.

I'm not sure about the company you are currently in,but for the field engineer over here, most people get their senior field engineer title after 2  or 3 years.
