If you're going to get a usb wifi adapter, you may need to get a usb powered hub(you need to check on the internet to see if it can be powered from raspi's usb power alone or not). If you're using TP Link 727N, or any MT7601 based usb wifi adapter, you can use the command below

NOTE: for Raspi B, B+ only

CODE

rpi-update 4e2845e0cbe7e701f0431e66a26f730de264e7a6

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/mt7601-3.18.11-777.tar.gz
tar xzf mt7601-3.18.11-777.tar.gz
./install.sh

This is a good article.
Pi2 is about 2x the original Pi. And there's Cubox, at 3x the price.

nope. typically I use usb ones because I need to record something for fun. But if you wanted something more serious, then I don't know much about it. Probably you can survey around garage sales?

finally got my pi2 working today lol (as parts all from ebay which take weeks to arrive but alot cheaper except the pi2 itself from RS)

pi2 surprisingly work well with ASS subtitles, that have font effects and various size, which i never expect it could

and also tested video in h.264 encoding in high 5.1 profile also work

the GPIO module if pair with openelec is not really plug n play but need a line in config to make it work

pi2 really dont like 1A power supply.. only give error until i switch to 2A power..

it can play very big files (over10GB h264) over LAN with no problems. pi1 is a bit slow for UI interaction, but for video decoding, it is the same as pi2.

try https://osmc.tv/ it has a cleaner interface out of the box as compared to vanilla kodi skin in openelec or xbian. slightly more responsive UI interaction too.

using my pi1 and pi2 as media player over LAN.
