Hey guys, what type of remote that works for raspberri?
Rite now I have the HP MCE remote, will this work as simple as plug and play, or do I need to configure it to get it working?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004PXJGXU

Also, what skin works best for xbmc, other than confluence?

Just wanna ask, what's the best transfer speed you can get on raspberry nas? Particularly on rpi2

I've read some reviews that with RPI connected to gigabit Lan via USB to gigabit Lan adapter, you can get around 16Mbps

Alrite, just received the rpi2 today
I'd like to know how much space do I need to allocate for ext4 partition on the sdcard that's recommended?
Should it be 50% from the overall space? I'm using 32gb sdcard btw.

I think you can go more than that with rpi2 as the review that you see was done with rpi model b. My rpi model B typically maxes out at around 8-9mBps with the built in 100 base T adapter(although, don't think too much because your sd card will be a bottleneck once you go over 100 mbps)

Thanks for your input
Assuming I simply want to transfer a file to a hdd attached to rpi via samba/nfs share, would the sdcard still be a bottleneck?
Also, is that your blog?
I see the banana pi seems to have tremendous speed when transferring files over gigabit lan

Nope, it would be dependent on the speed of your hdd(which would be more than enough). Nope, it was just a blog that I found while googling.

Banana pi is faster because it uses a dedicated chip for the gigabit nic and usb 2.0. So there's no bus sharing resulting in loss of performance unlike all rpi generations where the usb 2.0 bus is shared by all usb devices and the internal nic. Not to mention that the banana pi has a powerful cpu compared to rpi(not particularly sure against rpi2 because I have not checked on that part).

p/s: to be honest, if you wanted to do file sharing via samba/nfs, may as well as get banana pi or banana pro instead  sweat.gif

Banana pi is definitely quite interesting, from what I read so far, it's not that great for media player but suits well for other purposes
I'm just quite unsure about the development for banana pi and I don't see too many people using it here
But with the sata port, I wonder if it supports sata ports multiplier to attach more hdds.

Btw, just tried openelec on RPi2, and the performance is really great so far, no buffering when watching movies or crashes.
Everything is smooth when running on heavy skin like Aeon NOX, I actually bought IR receiver with remote for the rpi but the hdmi cec feature seems sufficient since I'm able to use the tv remote to control Kodi UI. I notice there's only shutdown option once the timer is up, no sleep option.
Is it better to just leave the RPI2 online all the time?

I had very similar issues when I received my Pi B+ in July 2014.
Rule of Thumb: Use branded cables that came with your branded charger (phone/tablet). All pasar malam cables are only as good as 5V@0.5A.

You can read about my blog post about cables and charges here.
I did a test on the Pi 2 vs Pi B+ when I received my unit. You can read about it here.

Honestly, for that price of a Pi 2 + SD Card + Case + Good PSU (at least RM200 ~ 250), you might as well buy a purpose made NAS.

I am currently using the D-Link DNS-327L, which is about RM400 (I think), and on GB Lan, I can get about 50~60MB writes and 40~50MB reads.
Sorry no blog post, but use it on the daily basis to move files between PC & NAS

But the Pi as Media Centre, Media Storage device & Torrent machine is great at that price point!
*
Thanks for speed test, I guess you just won't get much speed even on GB lan with RPI,
I wonder if they'll include gigabit lan for the next rPI

I guess the reason I never bothered to use commercial nas it because they always require the HDD to be formatted in ext4 partition when most of my hdds are in NTFS and already filled with bunch of stuff that I'm just too lazy to backup elsewhere sweat.gif

Btw, for file extraction particularly with rar files, how long will it take to extract huge files with rpi2? Say around 1gb files

you don't really need bleeding edge updates though, although device support is important(like to support the IR receiver that you're using).

just leave it on. I have 3 rpi + 1 desktop running 24/7 at my room  sweat.gif  shakehead.gif  shakehead.gif  shakehead.gif

Got no overheating problem with RPI? Or do you place it near a fan or something
I saw some casing that provides heatsink as well

I do place heatsink on one of my rpi which does the torrent downloading. The others are just for media streaming. I'm planning to build a diy cooling system for my rpis and desktop but I guess it will have to wait after cny
*
Will have to check how to place those heatsinks, are you using those private trackers for torrent?
I don't use torrent much anymore, mostly just direct downloads using alldebrid account
Tried using pyload for openelec, but not getting max speed and unstable download speed.

FYI, Thundermatch Lowyat has the RPI 2 going for RM159. Purely as a matter of convenience and instant gratification.

I didn't buy one though, thinking of getting Odroid C1 for Android.
*
Might as well get rPI2 from element14 (rm127) with free shipping
Where do you plan to purchase Odroid C1?
Looks like another interesting mini pc with gigabit port
I see lots of Odroid models on hardkernel

element14 got free shipping? coz I see the free shipping only for order RM150 and above...

If you check previous post, they actually provide free postage for any order on their website which is nice.
For me, I ordered the case for rpi2 later with no shipping charges.

I see... let me check again. If the availability status is "Awaiting Delivery" means that they don't have stock now and don't know when they'll get it?
*
They usually replenish their stocks really fast, bought mine a during CNY, and a day before that already listed out to stock
Also, not really rPI related, but has anyone bought an Odroid C1?
Has anyone had experience with korean post? It's the default courier for orders below $60 on hard-kernel.com
Just wanna ask how long it would usually take for delivery to malaysia since by their estimates could take more than a month.

I have ordered cubietruck, bananapi before this. Usually with package value <RM500, should not have issue with customs, furthermore Hardkernel declare it as "evaluation board",  lagi no problem. Anyway, after 1 April with GST, situation may change.  sad.gif

BTW, Odroid C1 idling temperature can easily reach up to 60 C degree.
*
Ok, I definitely didn't check that ohmy.gif
Just read on odroid that some guy's c1 reach around 88 C
How's the idle temp compared to banana pi?

Bananapi is about 35C. Cubietruck is 50C. Although both are using Allwinner A20 CPU, but bananapi cpu is mounted at the bottom of the board. Maybe this is the advantage. By touching on the plastic casing, bananapi is about the same as raspberrypi. Odroid is way too hot.
*
Decided to go with banana pi instead, since I want to use it as nas for its gigabit port
The more read about C1's idle temp going from 50 - 70 C, the more I worry I about the lifespan since I plan to have it online 24/7 sweat.gif

Here are your choices for remote:
1. Use your TV remote if your TV's HDMI supports CEC. eg. For Samsung TV's the CEC feature is called AnyNet+
2. Use your mobile phone, download and install Yatse
3. Plug-in a wireless keyboard based on RF (e.g. Logitech K400R or Logictech mk330). I don't recommend bluetooth or IR as these need line of sight.
*
I already have a logitech harmony remote, just need to import the settings once the ir receiver/remote I ordered arrived
My only problem with HDMI CEC (VierraLink for my Panasonic) is that it doesn't always work right away
Sometime I need to turn off the off/or even change different input before getting it to work,
Obviously this depends on your TV brand if they're really compatible or not
Yatse/Kodi official remote is nice but I prefer something with tactile feedback
