Budget : just surveying first. Maybe below 5k
Your Location : KL or Seremban
Preferable brand : Canon
Type of photography u want to do : Scenaries, People
Any specific models in mind? : Canon EOS 650D
Any specific features u want? : Just user friendly and easy to use.

Surveying DSLR for my gf. Is ths Canon EOS 650D suitable to be used by beginners?

I see Canon website showing EOS 650D (body) selling at RM2599. Just the body is enuff? Or do I need to buy a better Lens to match it?

Sorry for the noob question. Noe not much about DLSR.

That's a pretty high budget for a beginner laugh.gif
Yeah I guess the 650D would be a good choice with the touch screen feature.
But since its not an entry-level DSLR, you might need to stick to Program mode for starters. But since its not an entry-level DSLR, there is more space for improvement and convenience once you get the hang of taking shots.. it all depends on how interested you are in photography..
Still, if your gf is only interested in taking snapshots, it might be better to get a mirrorless camera, at least its lighter laugh.gif

"Body" means without lens, you're going to need a lens for the camera to work nod.gif
The kitlens that come with the camera would be a good pick

I would recommend an Olympus XZ-1 or a Canon S100/S110 for around your budget, pretty good camera wub.gif
But if strictly Nikon, perhaps it'll be good to save a bit more for a Nikon P310?
Don't really know much about Sony cameras laugh.gif But the Tx-66 seemed to be within your budget

Hmmm...mirrorless camera is also known as interchangeable-lens camera?

Currently eyeing on this model.

And what do you mean by it is not an entry-level DSLR? It is listed as for beginners in Canons website. hmm.gif It means based on your experience, this camera is also capable to be considered as semi-professional? shocking.gif

You're gonna be hard-pressed to find an interchangeable lens camera that's waterproof (none actually comes to mind).
Weather-proof there are a few (Panasonic GH3, Olympus OM-D EM-5, Pentax K-30 etc), but these definitely won't fit your budget (way more than 1k).

Waterproof, quite a few too (Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon etc), but these are mainly Compact Cameras.
With a 1k budget, take a look at the Waterproof compacts.

blink.gif since mirrorless camera cant really be waterproof besides using casing, then I will just go for compact type.
Handy when I need it too. icon_rolleyes.gif

I look around the net already, Olympus camera famous for being tough. Panasonic is playing good on waterproof too, but I doubt on Sony brand hmm.gif

Sony design all look like the same LOL... laugh.gif

Olympus Toughs are usually the best waterproof/shockproof/freezeproof in the market, can't really go wrong with them nod.gif
And the performance is pretty good as well when compared to similar compacts from other brands thumbup.gif

I guess the problem with Sony's waterproof cameras is the sliding mechanism... get any small sand particles or debris inside and slide, then you can kiss the metalic paint bye bye tongue.gif
Don't expect rugged cameras to be "thin and light" la haha laugh.gif
Perhaps you can take a look at the Olympus TG1.. I've read some of the reviews and this one seemed to be the best among the competition hmm.gif

Yeah, those are small digital-cam-like cameras which are capable of lens changing, and also rival certain DSLR in terms of performance nod.gif

Its sort of for new-and-medium-leveled beginners' choice I guess haha That camera is no slouch laugh.gif
It doesn't really matter what's the categorization of the camera if its used only to take normal, everyday photos, the skills of the photographer is the most important nod.gif
If budget is not a problem, the 18-135 lens would definitely be better since it offers extra reach, but at the expense of portability lo (depends on how much your gf is willing to carry).. go to shops and try out the thing 1st before making the purchase icon_rolleyes.gif

Hello everyone  biggrin.gif

Type of camera/lens/accesories:  mirrorless? or digital?
Budget:  RM1,000-1,500
Your Location:   Penang. Are cameras cheaper in KL?
Preferable brand :  Nikon, Panasonic Lumix, Samsung?
Type of photography u want to do :  Travelling, taking night/morning sceneries, FOOD biggrin.gif, outing with friends, miniature figures
Any specific models in mind? :  Nikon 1 J1/ Nikon 1 J2/ Lumix DMC Lx7/ Samsung Nx1000
Any specific features u want? :  Something not too difficult to use as I'm not a professional photographer, able to take nice and clear pictures, WORTH its price, not too heavy for travelling, fast start up (don't like waiting for it to on and load cause when travelling might miss something in a second)

Have been battling between these few cameras in my head rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif . I can't decide which. Looking forward to some advice. Would the sifus here kindly advise on their pricing too?

THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

If you're looking at "Mirrorless" cameras, there are quite a few from companies such as Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji.
Generally companies such as Sony (NEX series), Canon (EOS M), Nikon (1 series) and Fuji (X series) utilize a larger sensor such as the APS-C (from Sony).
Olympus (PEN and OM-D) and Panasonic (GH, G, GF, GX series) follow a standard known as Micro Four Thirds which utilizes a slightly smaller sensor (rumored to be made by Sony too).
What most of them (most not all) have in common is that they also support Interchangeable Lenses.
(I'm personally not too familiar with Samsung, so can't help much there)

Not sure about pricing in Penang tho'
You can get pretty good bargains in Lowyat (both forum and Plaza), Digital Mall or outlets such as Boeing, YL Camera etc...

I like mirrorless cams as they're smaller compared to DSLRs (I normally go out with a small messenger bag/satchel).
I'm personally partial to the Micro Four Thirds standard as it's quite small, pretty good in low light and have some excellent prime lenses.
I use both the Olympus OM-D and Panasonic G5.

I've also heard good things about Fuji's excellent IQ (Image Quality), Nikon's fast AF (AutoFocus) (but a lot of drawbacks), Sony's fast AF and IQ (but not so great on lens range).
There are some pretty sub 1.5k deals on the Sony NEX F3K, Panasonic GF/GX and Olympus (older) PEN series.
I've heard that the EOS M is dog-slow and that one should steer clear of it.

Of course the newer range of mirrorless cameras can be a bit pricy (not too far from DSLR pricing).
If you're willing to go a generation older or go for the ones without a ViewFinder, the pricing can be lower.

I'm by no means an expert on mirrorless..

YMMV...
