Hi guys! I'm joining the "Finding The Heartbeater 2012" competition held by Hearbeat Drumsticks Malaysia and this is my video for the competition:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...d&v=3ztsvV3Nxz4

I would be grateful if you could kindly spend a few minutes of your most valuable time to vote for my video. To vote for me, just go to this link:

http://apps.facebook.com/easypromos-premiu...10784/614390611

I welcome any constructive comments to improve myself and sorry if the video/audio quality sucks. Thanks guys!

VOTED !! smile.gif
No comment as per your drumming coz I am still very new.

But as per the video ...
I guess brighter/additional lights might help.
Dark/Black background, Black tee-shirt and Black drums ... err ... don't really stand out from the crowd.
You'll need something more eye-catching for the judges to notice you first; amongst all the other contestants.
The guy who had his drums setup outdoors at night and the other guy who had lights in his drums; are among the few that stood out and grab your attention. And then there is another guy who hit his cymbals with his drumsticks [suddenly I thought of chicken drumsticks ... damn ... i must be hungry again!!] pointing downwards. IMHO, in the event of a tie, personal style will determine whether the vote goes to you or the other guy. But first impression always determine whether you are amongst the front runners.

Having said that, I wish you the best of luck.

Personally, I would have attached some reflective stickers to the drumsticks. It'll give the impression that the sticks are going really fast at the drums brows.gif

Hahaha ... but then, that's just me. sweat.gif

Yeah totally agree with you! My appearance in that video was not so attractive as others. Well, actually that video was made last minute. I got to know about the competition 2 days before the dateline, so I went up to my friend's studio and straight away record it. and when I got back, I realized that my camera lens was out of focus, that's why the video looks a bit blurry. hahaha. I decided not to mic-up the whole set coz it'll take some time to mix them and I'm scared I wont be able to finish up before the dateline. But. overall, it was a good experience as that was my first recorded drum cover.

Btw, thanks for the comments, really appreciate it.

I did ask ... and it was some "J" brand. The cymbals have some J logo printed on it. Generally, how much should I spend on cymbals alone?

There's zildjian, istanbul, meinl, paiste, sabian .... not to mention there's so much options within each brand.

It's like Chee Cheong Fun with multiple choices of sauces. Different sauce will bring different taste.

Maybe if you guys can tell me what cymbals you guys are using or prefer ... it'll help me narrow down the selection.

If you have the time, do tell how did you go about buying your first set of cymbals. Whether it sucks or not tongue.gif and whether you regret it tongue.gif LOL

Added on December 8, 2012, 3:52 pmHow often do you need to replace the cymbals?
I just learnt that there'll be wear and tear. And cymbals need replacing.

Alright. Just a note for everyone here. J Cymbals are Stagg cymbals, rebranded. I was talking with one of JSs head honchos, and its made in the same factory, to be sold with their own kits.

Honestly, it's all up to personal preference. It's a very subjective matter. I've played Sabian since I started drumming, and I've stuck with the brand ever since, for my personal cymbals. I use a mix of their "Modern Dark" HHX and "Modern Bright" AAX cymbals. I fins it gives me a nice palette of tones to play with. Of course, every single cymbal sounds different. No two cymbals, even in the same range or model selection, sound the same.

I feel that at the very least, you ought to follow this: Never buy brass cymbals. The lowest quality of cymbals that you should go for are B8 Bronze cymbals. Most beginner/intermediate lines are made from B8 Bronze (with some exceptions such as the Paiste 2002, which is a high end range). Most higher end cymbals are made of B20 Bronze, with traces of silver, and different hammering styles for different tones.

The amount of wear and tear on your cymbals will depend mainly on technique. If your technique is good, your cymbals will obviously last longer than if your technique isn't. Sometimes old cymbals do sound good as well. Again, personal taste wink.gif But then again, like most other things, aged crap cymbals will sound crappier, but good vintage cymbals MAY sound better. wink.gif

Most of the drummers I know change their cymbals not because of wear and tear, but because different situations/genres/setups require a different tonal palette, or maybe its cause their own tastes have changed. smile.gif I used to love having everything bright and cutting, but now that I'm playing in more and more situations where I need the dark blend, and I'm not doing as much hard rock as I used to, I've slowly gotten darker cymbals into my setup, which are versatile enough to be used in several genres well enough.

On another note, I had my first practice with Hardcandy last night. Kit was a PDP 805, with Aquarian heads on them at Pulse Soundworks, Subang Jaya. Will take pictures tonight!

Playing at the Hard Rock Cafe KL on Sunday after The Pool KL on Saturday. wink.gif Not sure if its a closed event or open event.

JS stop selling stagg cymbals since 2008. They stopped ordering stagg cymbals coz the price increases tremendously. Eventually, ultimate music brought it (not sure r they still selling it or not but I saw a few in their shop). JS design J cymbals with its logo and ordered it from the same factory as stagg.

Added on December 12, 2012, 12:54 amBtw, how do u all tune ur drums? Batter and reso head same pitch, batter higher or reso higher? I can't seem to fine tune my drums. I could hear the pitch difference in each lug but it'll either get to sharp or too flat even with a small tweak.

The Drumdials help to a certain degree, ie it gets you in the correct range but you still need to use your ear to fine tune.

The tune bot is an interesting one, it provides more precise tuning but i don't think it's available here in Malaysia.

This is getting more interesting by the day. I am about to get my first drum kit and having difficulty deciding on the cymbals. With Stagg, at least I know that the SH set is bronze and the others CXJ DXJ are brass/ brass alloy. Any ideas about the J brand?

About DrumDials and TuneBot ...

Would this work? It seems decent and easy enough for it to work.

It works, i have tried it before. This method basically tunes your drum to the lowest point when it starts to sing - when the wrinkles start to disappear. Then you fine tune it to your liking, but it's a starting point.
