Can someone kindly recommend a place in Klang Valley where I can browse and buy a drum set for my wife who has recently started drumming lessons.

I have been to the one at Ikano Power Center and also the one at Paradigm Mall. I read that Bentley is a no-no place.

Any advice is most welcome.

5p3ak, Thanks for the recommendation. JS Music is indeed a nice place to browse and look at drums. Bought two sets of Vic Firth drumsticks. My wife likes them. As for drums we are considering PDP Mainstage and PDP Z5.

The Sales Manager, Ray Lang recommended Z5.

Me and my wife know nuts about drums; so both of us decided to delay the purchase until later. She is just into her fifth drum lesson tongue.gif

Well, its not that Bentley's is a no-no place. You could always browse there, or JS Music, or Music Master. smile.gif
If you'd like some discounts PM me. smile.gif

Thanks for the offer. We will let you know once we have decided on the make and model. Currently we are somewhat overwhelmed by the choices available.

You're welcome. smile.gif I'm also letting go of a used set. It's a Ludwig Epic, still in extremely good condition. Do let me know if you're interested in this as well. Thanks!

I'm letting go for RM2.6k. Four toms, can be configured to 3 rack toms and one floor tom or two rack toms and two floor toms. Basically, I've only used it once for a recording session, it's in perfect condition. I stay in a condominium, so there's no use if I just keep it around in boxes. smile.gif Retail is RM4090.

The set includes hardware (stands and pedal), four toms and one bass drum. I'll throw in any snare of your choice at a 20% discount. smile.gif

May I know the colour of the Ludwig Epic set? It's a very tempting offer.

On the brighter side, SPM is over, and I'm close to securing my first gig as a contract sessionist. smile.gif

Showed my wife the picture of the Ludwig Epic. She didn't like it.
She likes the PDP Concept Maple ... White finishing. sweat.gif

It's christmas season and year end. It'll be foolish not to have a sale when your competitors are doing so. JS Music is having sale too.

Just wondering ... if I get my first drum kit, do I go with the set of cymbals the shop bundle it with the drum kit OR;

Should I shop for the cymbals separately. I would like to keep the cost down too.

How do you guys pick your cymbals? What are the things I should look out for? Thick cymbals or thin ones?

So sorry for the noob questions. I am totally lost here.

I did ask ... and it was some "J" brand. The cymbals have some J logo printed on it. Generally, how much should I spend on cymbals alone?

There's zildjian, istanbul, meinl, paiste, sabian .... not to mention there's so much options within each brand.

It's like Chee Cheong Fun with multiple choices of sauces. Different sauce will bring different taste.

Maybe if you guys can tell me what cymbals you guys are using or prefer ... it'll help me narrow down the selection.

If you have the time, do tell how did you go about buying your first set of cymbals. Whether it sucks or not tongue.gif and whether you regret it tongue.gif LOL

Added on December 8, 2012, 3:52 pmHow often do you need to replace the cymbals?
I just learnt that there'll be wear and tear. And cymbals need replacing.

Hi guys! I'm joining the "Finding The Heartbeater 2012" competition held by Hearbeat Drumsticks Malaysia and this is my video for the competition:

I would be grateful if you could kindly spend a few minutes of your most valuable time to vote for my video. To vote for me, just go to this link:

I welcome any constructive comments to improve myself and sorry if the video/audio quality sucks. Thanks guys!

VOTED !! smile.gif
No comment as per your drumming coz I am still very new.

But as per the video ...
I guess brighter/additional lights might help.
Dark/Black background, Black tee-shirt and Black drums ... err ... don't really stand out from the crowd.
You'll need something more eye-catching for the judges to notice you first; amongst all the other contestants.
The guy who had his drums setup outdoors at night and the other guy who had lights in his drums; are among the few that stood out and grab your attention. And then there is another guy who hit his cymbals with his drumsticks [suddenly I thought of chicken drumsticks ... damn ... i must be hungry again!!] pointing downwards. IMHO, in the event of a tie, personal style will determine whether the vote goes to you or the other guy. But first impression always determine whether you are amongst the front runners.

Having said that, I wish you the best of luck.

Personally, I would have attached some reflective stickers to the drumsticks. It'll give the impression that the sticks are going really fast at the drums brows.gif

Hahaha ... but then, that's just me. sweat.gif

Yeah totally agree with you! My appearance in that video was not so attractive as others. Well, actually that video was made last minute. I got to know about the competition 2 days before the dateline, so I went up to my friend's studio and straight away record it. and when I got back, I realized that my camera lens was out of focus, that's why the video looks a bit blurry.  hahaha. I decided not to mic-up the whole set coz it'll take some time to mix them and I'm scared I wont be able to finish up before the dateline. But. overall, it was a  good experience as that was my first recorded drum cover.

Btw, thanks for the comments, really appreciate it.

This is getting more interesting by the day. I am about to get my first drum kit and having difficulty deciding on the cymbals. With Stagg, at least I know that the SH set is bronze and the others CXJ DXJ are brass/ brass alloy. Any ideas about the J brand?

About DrumDials and TuneBot ...

Would this work? It seems decent and easy enough for it to work.

It works, i have tried it before. This method basically tunes your drum to the lowest point when it starts to have sing - when the wrinkles start to disappear. Then you fine tune it to your liking, but it's a starting point.
*
Ooo ... Thanks a lot. At least for the time being I don't have to worry so much about tuning when I get my drums tongue.gif
