We are a bit dead. HAHA.

On the brighter side, SPM is over, and I'm close to securing my first gig as a contract sessionist. smile.gif

It's christmas season and year end. It'll be foolish not to have a sale when your competitors are doing so. JS Music is having sale too.

Just wondering ... if I get my first drum kit, do I go with the set of cymbals the shop bundle it with the drum kit OR;

Should I shop for the cymbals separately. I would like to keep the cost down too.

How do you guys pick your cymbals? What are the things I should look out for? Thick cymbals or thin ones?

So sorry for the noob questions. I am totally lost here.

I did ask ... and it was some "J" brand. The cymbals have some J logo printed on it. Generally, how much should I spend on cymbals alone?

There's zildjian, istanbul, meinl, paiste, sabian .... not to mention there's so much options within each brand.

It's like Chee Cheong Fun with multiple choices of sauces. Different sauce will bring different taste.

Maybe if you guys can tell me what cymbals you guys are using or prefer ... it'll help me narrow down the selection.

If you have the time, do tell how did you go about buying your first set of cymbals. Whether it sucks or not tongue.gif and whether you regret it tongue.gif LOL

I just learnt that there'll be wear and tear. And cymbals need replacing.

My advice, buy USED professional Cymbals that are in good condition.

Oh my 1st cymbal set came with the kit...Zildjian ZBTs...okay lah...I bought Sabian 13" HH fusion hats and worth the money... thumbup.gif

Now planing to replace my Ride cymbal with Sabian AAX Stadium Ride drool.gif

Anyways...if for some unknown reason you can't hear the cymbal in person try searching it at Memphisis Drum Shop youtube

Their recording sounds very similar to the real thing itself AFAIK No EQ is used. But keep in mind the actual cymbal will be different, especially Hand Hammered Ones. icon_rolleyes.gif

Good cymbals don't need to cost a lot. There's some no-name brand I played that I liked... forgot the name but it's mentioned somewhere in the previous thread. Sold at Harmony Music (Damansara Uptown) back in 2010, not sure if they still carry it now. Seriously when I played it I was like, wtf is that?

Another value-for-money brand would be Stagg. Bona fide pro-level cymbals at affordable prices. Get their highest-end ones like the DH series and you can't go wrong.

As for personal preference, I like any cymbals that are good, and there are many. You can tell by just playing them with your hands. My own set is all Sabian HHX save for one Legacy ride, and I even have some not so common ones like the Ozone crash and a big china. They're great smile.gif
