i just lost another vampire crab, think your are right about molting , never see them molt before , i think this one died of failed molting cos
found 1 leg on moss. Your is orange color , where you brought it? i got mine from Nilufar.
i will try throw in some GH up , coral stone & Koi mineral stone.
Actually i have no idea whether they prefer dry or wet , but from youtube video most are keep in damp moss base substrate with a cup of water.
High humidity is required. i have some feeder shrimp in the water it is fun to see the crab try to grab them.

O i also lost one white lobster/crayfish due to molting as well... arghhhhh double lost today.

Expected, ADA amazonia will leech that much or more of ammonia initially. That why i said it took longer for ADA soil to stabilize and
cause shrimps dead if not fully mature. You need to do some gravel vacuuming after the tank is cycled to get rid as much of the debris from the top soil.

Not sure about it, few days already never notice any extra shell. I never see them molt before too but i do see their molted shell before. I keep red claw crab before but after 1st molt then all die already. That time still young not really do must research on them.

Ya, high humidity but they will stay on land longer than in the water. I actually buy it from Sazuka. How about purple?Nice?Never see them in real eye before. Those feeder shrimp can survive in water without water pump?Wont die?

Wow...You got lobster too?How many tank you actually own? shocking.gif

Purple & red is the same type like RCS got different color only. All my tank got water pump , the terra tank got an internal filter pumping water through
the decor. I have like 11 tank , big & small , biggest is only 2ft , smallest is 4.5L.

if different family then rarely cross breed la...

even if cross breed, the progeny is almost always infertile...

edit:- different family or different genera?

it is better not to mix feeder shrimps especially the large one in your fancy shrimps tank, not only they will grab all the food but will also chase/attack
your fancy shrimps.

Hi guys,
Am starting a shrimp tank soon. Already set up the 1.5ft tank with ADA amazonia & some plants about 5 days ago. I put some substrate & water from my other old tank which is stable to speed up the cycling.

When i did the NO2 test today, it showed 0ppm. I don't have the ammonia test kit though. Could it be possible my tank got cycled within 5 days?

Am scheduled to be getting my cherry shrimps end of this week.

Mine 2weeks le. Not much different, think is time to set up a crab thread instead of discussing here like bit out of topic biggrin.gif .

Btw I think i will change the set up like yours. I plan to increase the water level and put more plant. Give them more DW, they really like it, always hanging upside down to hide from you. So what your crab like to eat or you always give them live shrimp to hunt blink.gif ?have you try any insect or cricket before?

Possible in 5 days as i cycled my new shrimps tank in 8 days with new soil but old filter and water from establish tank plus pump in tonne of beneficial bacteria.

ADA amazonia is new or old soil from establish tank?
To be safe ,test for Ammonia & nitrite for 2 days, if both ammonia & nitrite is zero then test for nitrate , if nitrate is present and both ammonia & nitrite
still zero then your tank probably cycled. Just do a large at least 90% water change to remove/reduce the nitrate then you are ready to rock.

ADA soil is new. I placed some substrate from established tank in a plastic bowl & put in the new tank, and already did water change yesterday. Added water from established tank into this tank too.

I don't have ammonia test kit but tested the nitrite level. Still 0 ppm today. Anyhow moved some minnows from my established tank into the new tank as 'sacrificial lamb'. They seemed to be enjoying themselves there.

Think should be cycled unless all your beneficial bacteria is useless/died, there must be nitrite detected if tank not cycled as new ADA soil leech tonne of ammonia.

Bacter Ball help but not purigen, the fastest way to cycle a tank is to use old filter/media and water from established tank, temp above 27'c and
good aeration.
It also depend on the soil , ADA soil you need a huge army of beneficial bacteria to counter the huge amount of ammonia it leech.
Only use purigen after tank is cycled to remove organic waste & polish the water.
