SB-900 5.02 and that has been a while. From the site it was updated on 04/27/2011.

Not sure since I bought my flashgun back in June last year and it came with 5.02. Yeah, I can select BL from the mode.

TTL-BL should be in the SB900 ever since the start.
even sb600 and sb800 has that option.

I think it stands for Back Lighting. Not to sure thou but the camera takes the ambient light into account when calculating the flash exposure(good for fill flash I guess) compared to TTL which you can make the flash the dominant light source.

Added on January 10, 2012, 2:16 pmOpps! I just googled Its

Balanced Filled.

TTL-BL is also the default mode for SB700, not sure on the SB910 if it borrows that part also from the SB700.

Actually its the default mode for Matrix metering.

But once you change it to spot metering the SB700 will automatically change to TTL

Im currently using both D7k and SB700.. Cant speak for other flashes! xD

For SB-900, SB-910, we change the mode using LCD UI than using "notch" like SB-700. Hence, there's nothing such as default TLL-BL for SB-900, SB-910 as we rotate the dial to change the mode (for SB-910 press the mode button I guess). Hence, we'll dial between TTL and TLL-BL.

Yup. Still have my SB-800. Perhaps I'll jump to SB-900 before they are gone.

Works the same for all Nikon speedlights. Switch to spot metering and it changes to TTL. I actually prefer TTL though. TTL-BL sometimes think it's smarter than the user and therefore you do not get a consistent result.

More likely user's problem. To start with, TTL itself already giving inconsistent result depending on the metering. We can't rely too much on TTL.
