WP7 is not a better iphone. Its appstore is less than 1/10 of ios and it will never come close. The os has not caught up with ios or Android by a long shot. It does not support multicore, NFC, wi-fi hotspot or video calls and it has a fixed resolution which is getting low by today's standard. It does not support Divx or Xivd video codec so Zune has to convert to a low quality version. It has fake multitasking which is even worse than ios as it only allows 5 apps to be opened. The internal storage support is only limited to 16GB now. Compared to iphone its voice control is only rudimentary.
WP7 does not have a homescreen. A homescreen is where you can put widgets. WP7's tiles are not widgets. Only certain types of tiles can be live and their information density is very low like just showing the no. calls or msgs or a line of text. Those tiles which are not live are just big ugly icons.
In terms of restrictions WP7 may be worse than iphone as it does not even allow you to use any MP3 files as ringtones. You have to buy ringtones from the Microsoft store. At least iphone can be jailbroken to bypass the restrictions but no such luck for WP7.
Although I'm not an iphone fan to call WP7 a better iphone is an insult to Apple. At most it is a cheaper but less capable phone for those who cannot afford an iphone 4S.
It is. App Store is about apps, come close or not, doesn't have anything to do with a better iPhone or not.
The concept and build of Windows Phone is just like iPhone.
Simplicity, Stability and Reliability.
Limitations and Restrictions, Controls; No access to storage, everything have to use their software to do (e.g. iTunes for iOS, Zune for Windows Phone; can you see the similarity? This is what iOS created, and now Windows Phone is the only OS that follows, but for a smartphone OS standard, this is just so not right)
Catching up or not, it's just a matter of time, for smartphone/experience users, this should be general understanding. All those you mentioned, is just what what iOS start, so there's no difference really; they fall in the same category, and to most users, many of those things doesn't matter, if it does, they would've go for Android or a proper smartphone. So, in general, Windows Phone is just like iPhone but better where it gives something that iOS still does not offer, such as the Social Networks Integration. In today's world, Social Network plays an important role apart from apps and games.
The Tiles is not a proper homescreen, but still something LIKE a homescreen, in essence, still better than iOS with APP MENU only. Homescreen and Desktop is different, homescreen is a proper screen for HOME, it doesn't have to be desktop like. How each OS design their own HOME it up to them, to Windows Phone, this is the HOME screen, but for iOS, the HOME itself is the FIRST PAGE or the APP MENU.
As for restrictions, I'd say both are LPPL, no need to go into details like ringtones, both s*cks; Jailbreak is a different matter, for Windows Phone, it may have its own jailbreak too.
I'm not insulting Apple, maybe you don't like Windows Phone. For me, I never like both, equally; I have iOS myself, but I wouldn't pay for an iPhone, when I can get an iPod Touch for almost 1/3 of iPhone price; In fact, I enjoy what it can do, 99% the apps/games that is, the animation is smoother and more interactive than Windows Phone, so if you say prefer, I would prefer iOS for it's graphics, Windows Phone is 2D, it's plain and ugly for me.
BUT to compare, both are the SAME, Windows Phone basically follow whatever/most iOS path, with all the restrictions, limitations. BUT, they do offer better things, like a homescreen, and the best yet, People Hub. Let's be honest, the People Hub is something special on the Windows Phone, although, it's not something NEW for people who owns Maemo/MeeGo.
In short, both are in the same category, Windows Phone simply offers "more" of what iPhone can offer. In Windows 8, there will be external storage support, by then, there will be even "more". It's just a matter of time and this is SOFTWARE not HARDWARE.

> physical buttons > possibly failure LOL
as long as the virtual keyboard is good enough i don't mind using it
not like i am gonna type my thesis or my code via it (doing it via ssh from my macbook anyway lol)
Fail still can use on-screen/virtual keyboard what.....
Got 2 is better than 1. Choice. There's certain things Virtual keyboard can't do and there's limitations.

It doesn't matter that WP7 just started a year ago. Users don't bother waiting for an os to grow up if they can get a better os right now. You have to remember that when ios first started the competition was also just as bad. Android was practically unusable except for geeks. Blackberry was mainly about email. Symbian was struggling with touchscreens. In the present environment users have lots of choices including MeeGo. WP7 has to compete with present day os, not those from the dawn of smartphones.
Added on February 13, 2012, 8:57 pmWP7's limitations will send you screaming back to MeeGo soon enough.
MeeGo will surely be a better option; It only lacks apps/games, mainly WhatsApp now. Else, it could've gain many customers/users.
As for now, Windows Phone 7.5 have much offerings and suit satisfy most "general" user. Honesly, those user's of iPhone hardly utilize their OS anyway. That's why I said (generally), Windows Phone is a better iPhone whereby it offers general users something "more" to them. It's just a matter of apps/games but as long the apps/games that they need are available, it would be able to meet their requirement/needs. (e.g. WhatsApp is available on Windows Phone, and more to come).
