i have a 20GB seagate which served me for more than 4 years. partitioned, then merged, format, for countless times but until today no bad sector, never gives me any problem at all. i got another 40GB which i have had for about 2 years. last month bought another 200GB. all of them are quiet and problem free. i only trust seagate.

Interestingly, i had the opposite effects,My 20gb(kicked the bucket),40gb(kicked the bucket also) and 60gb(knocking on heaven's door). However, there were no bad sectors huh.gif All were about 2-4 years old.

My WD 120GB(same year i bought the 60gb seagate) still runs rock solid thumbup.gif

Sometimes I am really curious whether there is such necessity to cool the HDD? Coz I have not had no problems at all with hard drives since I had a PC. And my HDDs are always ready and never powered down when idle.

Are you guys in Malaysia getting high HDD temps?

i'd been using maxtor for about 4 years..still got no prob..i think the main reason they are still in good working condition is that i kept them not 'overheat'..just put big fan aside them and kept air flowing through.. normal condition of them usually is around 30 degree celcius.. i think u all should try putting fan..very usefull smile.gif

I noticed something weird. The WD I bought Made in Malaysia, seems to get faulty pretty fast. Last time bought one, in a week got bad sectors. Then exchange. After a month, the new one totally gone. Then exchange for a Made in Thailand batch. Very good indeed. Now whenever I buy WD HDD, I know which one to buy. Just sharing some thing I experience here.

My Seagate 10GB served me well from July 2000 till now. No bad sector at all.

Need you to clarify one question. My colleague says if we buy NOTEBOOK HDD and use it as external/ portable HDD, It doesn't need external casing. He said only the normal size 5.25" HDD need to buy external casing if used as external HDD. Is he right?
