Talk to a person in the IT business.
Looks like Maxtor gave the biggest profit margin that is why you find Maxtor being push by all salesman in the PC industry.

He mention for the best quality\reliability is Hitachi follow by Seagate
For best perfomance select WD but noisy and more heat and is good for gaming.

I only use Hitachi and Seagate.

In case you do not know, Hitachi bought over the IBM HDD busineess
some years ago so basically you are buying IBM HDD.

Years ago, mention IBM and you shake your head because you cannot afford anything that is IBM branded.

But now ,IBM HDD and PC is so affordable and I wonder why no one ask for them anymore.

Hmm.. Do you know WHY IBM sold their HDD business (back) to Hitachi? Have you heard of the DeskStar 75GXP.. AKA the DeathStar? rolleyes.gif

Check out IBM Deskstar 75GXP Class Action Website. And FYI, Fujitsu also had a class action suit resulting in exit from the desktop market. See HDD Class Action Settlement Website. cool.gif

Blackout. HD worst enemy. So get a good HD ... and a good UPS. dry.gif I had a lot of blackout these few months and my Maxtor 300GB started to give bad sectors. Just 4KB but it's there ... and everytime Windows startup, it always want to check the HD. I've started burning like mad and hopefully maybe i'll get another drive soon. Probably WD.

Old news already. In fact a thread on "Seagate To Buy Maxtor" was posted here back in December 26, 2005... on the same day the news was announced. doh.gif

Haih. The hdd just died without any notice. It was working in the afternoon and when I turned on my lappy in the evening, there's some weird noise coming out from the hdd (something like the hdd can't run and some mechanical sound like something getting stuck).

Replaced it with an overpriced Samsung (damn the brits). sigh sweat.gif

Toshiba's nothebook HDD is not reliable.

I have serviced 4 laptops in my office, all CLEVO notebooks from Taiwan but all using Toshiba HDDs.
All of them are between 3 - 5 years old.

1 HDD totally cannot detect.
1 HDD have plenty of bad sectors.
1 HDD have no bad sectors, but HDD controller failure while read/write causing slow loading and response, almost like HDD frozen.

The worst thing is Toshiba do not have any diagnostic utillity for their HDDs!

alamak..
you bought your Samsung hdd already....
why don't you give it a try for Seagate?!

but never mind, let see how good is the Samsung hdd can last....
later you can tell us how good it is....

for a hdd can last for 5 years, is it consider a good already?
or should be greater than that?

but mine 20G Quantum hdd, still dunning now without giving me any problem,
no bad sectors, no SMART error, none.. nothing...
it's already serving me well for about 6 years...
i predict, it's still can serve me another few more years, i think, let's see how...

i think, hdd can last for 5 years consider ok right? rather than a year problem occurs!! doh.gif

Actually I wanted to try out Seagate and such, it's just that, the PC World here is not selling any of those. All they are selling are Samsung sad.gif

However, I do find that the Samsung fluid bearing technology is rather interesting as my laptop is all quiet now.
