i have a 20GB seagate which served me for more than 4 years. partitioned, then merged, format, for countless times but until today no bad sector, never gives me any problem at all. i got another 40GB which i have had for about 2 years. last month bought another 200GB. all of them are quiet and problem free. i only trust seagate.
Interestingly, i had the opposite effects,My 20gb(kicked the bucket),40gb(kicked the bucket also) and 60gb(knocking on heaven's door). However, there were no bad sectors 
All were about 2-4 years old. My WD 120GB(same year i bought the 60gb seagate) still runs rock solid
