So at POS we tell the cashier not to use E-Debit for the debit card?
*
yerp... said use Mastercard... signature based.. not pin-based

but usually at the terminal POS,

Debit means E-Debit (MEPS)
Credit means Mastercard/VISA

so u need to tell the cashier to choose 'Credit' instead of 'Debit'...

but there are some merchants' POS terminals couldn't choose between that two options....

I was getting extra charges when buying games via Steam even though the currency is in MYR. Someone in Steam thread gave this explanation:

QUOTE(lowyat-user @ Jan 7 2015, 12:50 AM)
OK I am at my computer now. Continue from previous thread on the extra charge/fee.

The extra charge/fee is what~
MasterCard calls it "Cross border transaction fee”;
Visa calls it “International Service Assessment (ISA) fee”
and usually it is around 0.15% to 1% (I noticed so far Malaysia issuing banks go for 0.8%) from the total transaction.
Do note though it is Visa/MasterCard that applies the fee to the issuing bank and in turn, depending good or bad bank, either they absorb the fee or offset it to you (worse, they mark-up).

Refering to one example from limjenson:
Bought Shadow Warrior at 7.50 and SMS said RM 7.50.
Statement arrived, was charged 7.56 (7.50+0.8%).

Thread below is a good read. I copied some info from it.
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2519936/all
Visa and MasterCard now charge a cross border transaction fee even when no currency conversion occurs. This relatively new fee - “cross border transaction fee” (MC) or “International Service Assessment (ISA) fee” (Visa) – was initiated by Visa and MC to ‘fight’ usage of the international credit card processing network when no currency conversion occurs.

You may ask what kind of condition you will be charged with this fee and what's the difference if you buy online in foreign currency?
Simply put:
If buy in RM (local currency), but merchant's gateway/payment system in foreign country = Charge cross border transaction fee.
If buy in foreign currency = Charge with bank's conversion rate + admin fee (depending on banks)

So to know if your bank(s) has been "quietly" charging you with this fee all this while:
Check your online/paper statements for the charged amount on POSTING DATE and compare it to your Steam invoice/receipt or the SMS notification.
If they are the same, good for you - keep the card.
0.8% fee is easy to miss but it is noticeable if you spend a lot.

TL;DR - Banks which don't charge cross border transaction fee (copied from lowyat CC thread above). Go with these for your next Steam purchase:
+ OCBC
+ Maybank
+ Ambank
+ UOB
+ Alliance
+ Citibank
+ Public Bank

Banks that do charge:
- CIMB

(**However do research the cards reward/rebate. It may be rewarding for you based on your spending pattern in the long run although it sucks with the fee**)

Would be great if other people can check their statements and feedback here if they were charged with cross border transaction fee, or not. Quite valuable info and I plan to update the list of banks with the info.

Feel free to correct me if there is any wrong information.
EDIT: Some wording on banks that do charge.

You will not able to redeem anything with just 655 points.
The lowest points required is 3100 to offset RM12,50 GST

You can refer to cimb website

Actually I got offset with 10,000 points for the RM50

so the breakdown would be 2,500 for RM12.50

Don't be a salesman and just throw big numbers around like that. Let's take a closer look into this campaign by going through the PB Pay4U T&C. Fortunately, the TnC is quite short and easily understandable. However, if you are really lazy let me shorten it as much as possible for you:

Campaign is only valid for the following cards:
1. Day2Day Visa Debit
2. Visa Electron Debit
3. Esso Mobil Visa Debit

25% cashback is only valid for overseas spending and online overseas spending (meaning must be in foreign currency). Cap is set at RM88 for both categories. But first, you must qualify for promotional cashback rate by spending RM388 locally within the same month. Allocation of RM50,000 per month is made for this promotion, first come first serve.

Hi, I'm new to this subforum and I would like to ask some newbie questions regarding debit cards as this is my first time using it.

I'm using a Maybank Visa Cherry Debit Card.

1. Do I need to register for a Maybank2u account in order to use the card to do online purchases?

2. How do I activate MSOS?

3. How often are debit card statements mailed to me?

4. Can I request a statement immediately from any MayBank branch?

Thanks in advance.

hi guys recently on 12th jan someone made unauthorised purchase on my origin game account. so i have contacted the EA about the purchase and they have already make the payment in "Failed" status. However on my public bank debit card it still shows a holding amount of rm125 for around 9 days already. i went to public bank ask and they ask me to just wait till it clears. Is that true? By the time i posted it it is 10th day already sweat.gif

TLDR : Is it normal for hold amount to last up to even 10 days? icon_question.gif

THanks everyone for your insight biggrin.gif

Guna atm tekan keluar. Takda VISA/MASTERCARD/MEPS/CIRRUS/PLUS ? Kalau ada I believe you can withdraw like how you do normally, charges are slightly higher though.

Wah pierre, kuat ah you.. business so big already till you open up account at JPMorgan chase.
