Guys , I have a iPhone 3GS running on 3.1.3 . I wanted to update to 4.2.1 . So can I straight update or must I go through 4.3.5 ?

We are here talking about iphone bro. Ipad 2 only can if you are on 4.3.3

You should be able to use either redsn0w or greenpoison for the 4.2.1 firmware untethered

Or, i tot dats ipad 2 can downgrade w/o shsh blobs too.

In order to downgrade. Pre requirement = shsh. Check thru tinyumbrella for any shsh saved previously.

With upgrading or downgrading to any iOS that is no longer sign by apple require previously saved SHSH.

If you got 4.2.1 SHSH you can upgrade. So always save your new SHSH when is release.

I still on 4.2.1 and I can still save 4.3.5, I always plug my phone and run tinyumbrella whenever Apple release new iOS.

You can even save iOS5 beta SHSH with tinyumbrella.

As long you have your SHSH you can upgrade or downgrade anytime.

You can upgrade to 4.2.1 with your previously saved SHSH blob. No need to go through 4.3.5.

You can only upgrade/downgrade to any iOS version IF AND ONLY IF you have the SHSH blob for that particular version SAVED.

Yes. Through TinyUmbrella. Or Cydia will also help you to save them.

Run TSS server in tinyumbrella and shift+restore from itunes. (do this at your own risk). Restore directly to 4.2.1 ipsw. Make sure you backup first.

Added on September 23, 2011, 8:31 amCydia no longer auto save your shsh. Just go and save your shsh manually whenever new iOS is out.

With saved shsh you can and without shsh you can try this method here

The method in the link you given is by modifying host file which will direct iOS restore verification to saurik's server, which only work if saurik's server has your SHSH blob saved previously. So it's the same thing, you NEED SHSH blobs (whether locally or on saurik's server) to restore iOS to the version Apple had officially stopped signing.

Ahh this reminds me of the issue when 4.0 came out in modmyi, there were members who we reporting that they managed to downgrade without SHSH. BUT, all their methods required them to point the host file to saurik server which basically means that it requires the method to have SHSH saved somewhere. Turns out for those who were successful, Saurik had their SHSH saved most likely because the iPhone they had was a refurbished unit.
