In Malaysia, my neighbour mostly expats in O&G. Mainly from Holland, UK, US & Oz.
All work for Shell & Schlumberger. Their pay is 3 times more than locals including relocation and allowance.
I always wonder is it really that bad we couldn't get the same pay as theirs?
What's so special about expat?
The answer is you need to work in 3rd world country with your skills. I'm trying to look for job in SEA from Oz company so that my PR still counts as a job transfer.

I think only their experience in different types of projects? Nor maybe better comm skills compared to local grads? Besides that, nothing much.

It's just the lottery of life that they were born in the UK/Europe while we were born in Msia.

The thing is they are prob earning an average salary in their country of origin - but due to the RM being so low, and with allowances, it makes it worthwhile 4 them.

Jap expats kill for the chance to be posted in MY. Golf, a luxury impossible for the avg salaryman in JP, becomes affordable. Their budget for a condo is RM4-6K per month (for avg salaryman, more for managers).

It is great if u can find work in SEA with an Oz company. Ppl I know got put up in Hilton, plus AUD100 p/d makan allowance. Transport all paid for.

But with a more global economy now, with austerity being the key word, it is more likely ppl get sent from India, Phil etc. as they are cheaper.

this is so true, a mojor petronas project down south, the sub cons have employed Indian electrical engineers with 5-10 years experiance for only rm6k a month with no extras i.e you pay your own rent etc.

they declined to employ malaysians because the malaysians wanted circa 10k, i find this kind of hiring process bs, wages for malaysian professionals will never be able to climb up .

singapore residents are in the same boat , they cant compete with cheap indian/Philippines labor.

Not really. My dad told me that they're doing the same job, same thing everyday which exactly what local is doing. Why appointing them?
The reason is about the standard and skills in management which is different. That's 20 years ago.
Now it's far less appointing expat to Malaysia now as Malaysian has many more talented people working back home but for how long?
Mostly migrated and serving elsewhere for better pay and lifestyle. Unless company benefit is good and have a good career opportunity.

As for me, i just contacted an agent who has a job opportunities to work in Myanmar as expat salary @ USD11,000/mth + relocation + accommodation allowance + transport + 2 trip air ticket
Sounds very good but has been filled in a week.

Well, still fishing..... sweat.gif

Now malaysia bringing in 1.5million bangla. Well, the truth we become banglasia is a reality
They should have train locals to push up the standard and train them to become professional trade. Not bringing in more labour intensive immigrants! shakehead.gif

I am seriously planning to move to Australia (hopefully able to land at Melbourne). Due to my skills (Multimedia Designer), is not in SOL, but in CSOL (but currently not in any state list :/) So 189 is impossible for me, but 190, 489 maybe yes but need to wait have state want....

I wonder how hard it is to get employer to sponsor to work in Australia? I dont mind start as junior. Hopefully can get some guidance from people here that have successfully at Australia.

Very hard to be honest, unless you have a very niche skill. Any chance of furthering your studies in Australia then apply for jobs? Chances are higher that way.

I thought you were saying Australia is best? Thought you were just migrated to aus not long ago?
I'm not trying to troll you but didn't you say everything is good in Aus a year or so back? What changed?

Exactly right! I met SG auntie here. She's so happy she spend here 1 to 1. The only thing she's unhappy is she couldn't buy a house here unless she got visa. Paying SG1mil in SG still living in pigeon hole. AUD1mil in perth will give you almost a mansion. Car is cheap here.

Well, just bring in SG dollar if you guys wanna 'live'  biggrin.gif

isnt it easier for SG to get PR than Malaysia? unsure.gif

Change your profession, if I'm being blunt.

I was a graphic designer. I say was, because I decided i had enough of the rough timings of working in advertising (10pm, 1 am etc).

Best damn decision I ever made- going into education. I now TEACH design at a private uni instead so my SOL is on the State Nom list for a 190 for SA. It took about a week or so after I put in my EOI for me to get an invite from SA to apply (under vocational teacher).

My friend who also applied under SA was pretty shocked at how quickly my EOI was issued with an invite when compared to hers (editor).

Also when you go, don't expect to work as a designer. You might, but you may not, so there's that. My parents have these friends who migrated in the 90s, and the husband couldn't get a proper job, despite having a masters in HR. So he decided to be a taxi drivers and made a fantastic living; he even began leasing out his vehicle when he got too busy.

He's now teaching driving at a driving school and is incredibly happy because it's not as stressful.

Why do u think so? Each visa has awarded based on a list of criteria, eg skills, location, amt of investment.
Nationality is not a factor.

SG and HK ppl can settle in more easily tho, cos if they sell their property, the value is enuf to buy something decent in Oz.
Also their strong currency means that they won't lose as much when setting up their lives in Oz.

Based on what we are seeing, it looks like another scheme to make a minister's sibling very very rich.

I'm waiting for the approval from DIBP for the visa. In the final stage now.

You know, it's a 'moral obligation' to live in SA for 2 years, but under certain circumstances, they'll waive it.

I'll likely be in WA again first, seeing that the research program I'm after is run at Curtin, and I have extended family there. Unless the Uni in QLD has a better course structure. The fellas were not at the edu fair I went for a week ago, so I couldn't ask them about the course.

See, if you're under a 190 visa (State Nominated & sponsored), one of the criteria is a 2 year residency requirement in the state.

But like my agent said 'Moral obligation', and the state government can waive it if the circumstances permit, it is to their discretion.
