Alvin, i think you have labelled negatively on Oz. Sometimes shit happens to everyone but not all.
If racism and politic issue has been commented badly, how bout malaysia? Publicise us as pendatang?
I think most working places do consist of racism, but i know 1 thing is that Oz government takes racism offence seriously. If really there's racism issue going on, just bring them to court or watsoever laws which they'd implemented. Their government going to give them kao kao!
I must say, who the hell country is giving this opportunities to open their door for all migrants to come in and share their welfare and resources in return forgiving your profession. I know just a few countries mostly western country.
MAlaysia is totally different story. Law is there but never enforced. Only MAlaysia Boleh. I hate to say this but it's true.
If let say a bangla who's a migrant in malaysia and become your subordinates, are you going to promote him/her to the management level? Just touch on our heart and say it. Oz might be the same but if you prove yourself good and real good, i think there's no reason why they won't promote and racist against you. Angmoh is simple and straight, if you're good, productive and efficient, i think they'll reward you well. Why? Coz my dad work in Shell, his superior is angmoh, always sending him to netherland and japan for training and got promoted.
Same lah. Back many years ago, when I was boarding the train line to Glen Waverley, a shirtless drunked Ozzy boarded the train (I think at Hawthorne-can't recall), he was looking around and he saw one indian guy sitting alone.
So the drunked white aussie guy sat next to the indian student and said "Hello, you black shit, I feel like punching you in the face". Then the indian student got off and walk off to the next coach. Lucky for him the drunked Aussie was too drunk to pursue him.
The Aussies are smarter than that, they don't show their racism outrightly at office. They just gang up on you and make you look incompetent thats all. Remember, working in Australia is not like in Malaysia, where we get a lot of protection, employer can only show you three warning letters, then domestic inquiry. Even then, you have high chance of winning the case at tribunal. In Australia, they don't like your face, also can sack you straight away, no thanks to John Howard's time, when he removed all the employee protection.
Then in Australia, the company perform a bit worse, start retrenching people, not like here in Malaysia. Like during the 2011 sub prime crisis, both my friend and his wife in Sydney was retrenched. At that time Australia's growth was like 6-7%, they just do a panic retrenchment.
I agree with you about our Malaysian policy, meriotocracy, contracts given to cronies. Yeah its frustrating being chinese and indian. But even the ordinary malays are not exactly getting everything they want. Most still work as waiters, factory workers, office boy, nurses, clerks, etc. Still, don't have to force myself to work for government or GLC. Still got MNCs to apply for job.
I was worst off than you, I took up a tough job and lets just say I was supposed to get cooperation from this bunch of what I call - the "majority people" who worked there for over 20 years, part of my SLA was to get them to perform well. I try to placade to them and I try to be nice to them but they just didn't want to work harder. To them, it was just do A, B, C then D, E and F is not my job. So I kena from my boss kao kao because of them, and I was forced to resign when my appraisal was not favorable. You see, how disappointed I was?
At that time I got so angry and decided to apply for PR. I was thinking how could this bunch of majority people treat me like this, after what I've done for them?
And it was then I visited Australia, I heard so many bad stories from my friends, looks like problem is always universal, can't run away from it. I wish the situation here could change. the mentality of some people would change for the better of the nation.
Yeah, I am not happy with the state of our nation here. But I ask you this? Do you think migrating to Australia will improve your situation better than had you stayed in Malaysia?
Do you think you are jumping from a hot boiling pot into a pan of hot frying oil? OR a hot boiling pot into a patch of comfortable green grass?
1) Away from your family
2) Demoted to junior level
3) Are you able to prove it you can do the job better than the whites?
4) The pay you earning there makes it worthwhile to stay there?
5) Culture and food different
6) Take up substandard jobs, meaning you won't be doing the the kind of job you like doing
