QUOTE(usermode @ Feb 14 2012, 12:20 AM) - this is just me la... (not a pro advise.. just personal way), i'd leave it and just take care of the tank without touching it. LOL!!! 10 days is just too early to know anyway. i'd leave it at least 2 weeks minimum and if after that still no new growth and only melting keep going on, i'd plant new one (and of course figuring out what did i do wrong like increasing co2, lightings, etc). LOL!!! - and yes... most of us bought the stones. very few that are super hardcore would go out in the nature and find it themselves, then treat the stones/woods. it's just superbly ma fan.. it is very hard to find a suitable light with correct power for 1.5feet tank. Maybe you can make another 1.5feet and buy one set 3feet light set? LOL~ And yes, we usually brought the stones from store. One thing that i notice is that those stone you collected from waterfall are from different colors (some red/grey/black/white stripes), they does not fit each other if you are trying to make landscape design. Most probably you will found bogwoods in waterfall area only.

It's an old UV filter (1 year+ ) but just being used once for 3-4 days. i think the bulb still okay since not used. This post has been edited by usermode: Feb 14 2012, 11:04 AM

i got some more questions for the sifus around here >.<
1) anybody can tell me what type of snail is this? currently still quarantine it inside my 'turtles under renovation house'. found it after heavy rainstorm inside my living, stuck at our LED tv >.<, the slime~!!!! FUUUUUUU!! can it be introduce into my community tank? still cant find those big old golden apple snail >.<» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « 2) can anyone help me identify these plants inside my tank? asked a few lfs and they give each weird and different name and i cant remember all sigh. can help me with their local/english name and scientific name? this plant bears flowers that looks like mini chili after 2 weeks...btw, whats the plant behind it too? yeah the melting one» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « this is?» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « 3) since i found a few very big Metal-halide lamp as big as a rugby ball(the ones they use for spotlight in warehouse), can they be use for plant lighting? . Also, can those xenon 10k headlight be used as plant lighting too >.< ? saw them piled up in the recycled bin in front of my office( theres a lot of car repair workshop near my office) im just curious haha, sorry for those ridiculous questions especially number 3
thanx

@Luqee,
1 - looks like somekind of ramshorn snail. i am not a snail experts so cant give exact names. i guess it's no harm to ur community tank as long u can bear with the eggs and more of them since from my limited knowledge, ramshorn is an egglayers.
2 - a) looks like rotala indica to me and the behind one maybe is ludwigia ovalis. b) one of the cabomba family (they all looks alike anyway).
3 - not sure what lights is that (the one that like rugby ball). i never see any rugby-alike MH lights. photos might help. as for the xenon, if u can get it for free (since it's in recycled bin).. u still can use it. people dont use it because of the price mostly. i am not sure about the electricity consumption as i never used it before but i wouldnt use it just because of it's beamed and not really widespread unless u have more of them on top of ur tank so the light would spread evenly (which again... expensive and for its price, can go for a good actual aquarium lights like MH).
Added on February 16, 2012, 12:15 amanyway, im no expert in all ur questions... so i stand to be corrected by anyone (especially #1 and #3).

2) hurm...ok.. but how did you ...remember the scientific names?
3)will upload photo on friday, tomorrow MC.hehe

(got them from my office workshop) now just using cheap aquarium lighting sold at lfs consist of 1 CFL 7w. the colour temperature dont know but will change to 6500k or more. watt in my opnion is for the amount of electricity it uses, if u want lower ure electric, take the least watt. higher is better, but too high = high electricity bills + temperature will rises + % of algae growth greatly incresed. it also depends on ure plant, what type plant r u using? moss and some other plants dont require high lighting so my cheap 7w is just enuff for me tank..(now they are melting, maybe too hot, 30-31C or no CO2 yet or need to change to better lighting hahaha)
consult all the sifus and gurus in the thread for ure answer.. >.< im not sure my answer is 100% correct

sharing a post from UK his shrimp population (£300-400 worth of livestock) got wide off after adding some new plants, found it was some poisoning, so pls read thru ya i am not sure where malaysia lfs import their plants ... might be from singapore too.. the reason are: QUOTE I can confirm the following information has been provided by the farms in Singapore who supply plants to the UK market. This information has been consulted on with respected persons in the UK industry.
Phytosanitary certification requires the plants to be free of pests and disease prior to export to the receiving country. The methods applied are as follows – information supplied per farm:
Our premium plants are dipped in BUPROFEZIN (0.01%) & TRICHLORFON (0.08%) for the duration 120 minutes
Our primary supplier for standard plants dip in IMIDACLOPRID 18.3% V/V (0.005%) for 45 minutes
Our second supplier for standard plant range dip in IMIDACLOPRID 18.3% V/V (0.005%) for 60 minutes ========================= TRICHLORFON <http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC33346> Chlorophos insecticides are highly toxic organophosphate insecticides and cause damage to the nervous system ("anti-cholinesterase compounds"), so you would expect to see shrimp "staggering" about before dying. They are non-systemic, so shouldn't end up in the plant.
BUPROFEZIN It is an "Insect Growth Regulator", which means that it would stop crustaceans shedding their skins (it interrupts chitin synthesis), so it could cause death in the longer term.
IMIDACLOPRID, is a systemic, neonicotinoid insecticide and would remain in the plant for some time. Neonicotonoids are suspected of causing a lot of the decline of insect biodiversity in Europe and the USA, and a really not the sort of compound you would want anywhere near your shrimps.
IMIDACLOPRID has low toxicity to fish, but is highly toxic to crustaceans, in conc. as low as 1 ppb for Mysis shrimp. "Products containing imidacloprid may be very toxic to aquatic invertebrates." "The half-life in water is much greater than 31 days at pH 5, 7 and 9". from Kidd & James (1991) The Agrochemicals Handbook, Third Edition. Royal Society of Chemistry Information Services, Cambridge, UK. precaution if u adding new plants QUOTE Our recommendation will be that all plants from ANY supplier should be quarantined in Alkaline water for a minimum of 2 hours to 48 hours, then finally rinsed in tap water prior to addition to any tank with livestock present. Please note - we say a MINIMUM of 2 hours and suggest that 48 hours be better... don't forget to perform water changes when appropriate.
Alkaline water can be easily made using caustic soda or hydrogen peroxide mixed with water until the pH reaches 8.5. Remember to wash your plants in tap water as a final preparation before they go in your tank. http://www.plantedtanks.co.uk/plants-and-pesticides-17-w.asphttp://www.ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=19481

it is very dangerous if you are buying the plants directly from commercial farm. although it is cheaper, but dont take the risk. Whole population might wipe out over night.

err.. the shrimp news really a shocking one. luckily (or unluckily?) i'm not shrimp-players... well, because erm, simply put... shrimp god hates me i guess. LOL!! so the news doesnt affecting me so much. according to our daikor, king Stan, almost all LFS in Malaysia stocking plants from one same supplier. which i dont know where.... but Stan already posted something like this in MAC rite? where he already talked to the farm owner regarding this kind of case as well (happens recently to our Malaysian hobbyist as well). QUOTE(weijie @ Feb 16 2012, 09:12 AM) oh.. haha. i seldom buy from local fish shop geh. the only place i buy my plants is NA ss19. other shops i dont trust them. if possible then just buy from other planted tank hobbyist. P.S.: do not buy from AquaShop in Lelong. i had bad experience dealing with them. - i almost bought some downoi from AquaShop couple of weeks ago. Since downoi isnt a cheap plant so I'm concerned about his delivery methods. But didnt buy it because one MACer is selling few days after that (nutralife). Bought from him... fresh from farm in submerged version, handed over by hand and way more cheaper. ho ho ho... buying from hobbyist is always the best option for me weijie, later when we meet again... tell me the story about the AquaShop. saw in their catalgue, they have quite a number of plants also.
