Viber uses data, so you need either wifi or 3G.  Useful if you have a lot of contacts using Viber.  Not sure about Skype, never used before, maybe someone else can help smile.gif

lets say i have viber, my friend has viber we using viber as a platform to call or we still need our own individual sim in order to make call?
Basically without wifi, using 3g it will cost charges base on the teleco plan? kind of confusing here sorry sweat.gif

You will need sim cause you will need a number to be called or messaged to... viber needs wifi or 3g... so if you have unlimited 3g connection.. no charges will be done except your normal monthly subscription fee... viber to viber is free nonetheless but any charges you need for internet connection is not covered... it is like using skype with streamyx.. you call free but you pay monthly streamyx bill....

@Dannyl -
We haven't gotten reports of misfunctionality of the Exit button yet.
Are you using a custom ROM that might be causing your problem?

@Hico -
Viber pops up when you receive a call/text thanks to C2DM mechanism (similar to Push Notifications in iPhone).
This mechanism is used in many other apps as well, and it makes sure you are available to get texts/calls (otherwise - the point of the app is gone).
In order to disable your C2DM service, please contact Google - it's run by them.

On another note - could you please elaborate on the other scenario you described, with Viber running when you turn your WiFi on?

@dust -
Landscape mode is in the works these days.

@kuro0314 -
You need cellular reception only when registering, so we can send you the confirmation SMS with your code. After that, basically you can use your Viber on WiFi only. As HeartRoxas mentioned, you can also use it on 3G, but it uses MB from your data plan (0.5MB per minute of call). The amount you pay for your data is decided between you and your cell company, and has nothing to do with us. If you have a monthly pre-paid data plan, then you can use Viber freely without any concern of extra charges. WiFi, of course, is always free (and usually better for Viber calls).

Hi all,
Viber 2.0.2 has just been released to Market!

What's new?
- Viber is back on Market for HTC Wildfire and HTC Hero users. However, note that due to immanent compatibility problems, Viber might not work 100% smoothly. We're working hard to improve these problems.
- After hard work, as promised, Viber now supports *some* of the famous custom Android ROMs, such as CM7 and MIUI. We need your feedback in order to make sure the major problems with these ROMs are now resolved.

Please make sure you download the latest version.
As usual - for questions/technical issues feel free to contact me.

Regards,
Viber.

yes..once i connect thru WIFI it will auto pop out and appear on top. but it does not happen everytime.. it is like 3 times out of 5 times around that.

so thats mean even press exit, it actually still run behind? After i uninstall the viber, the battery problem solved.. even though i just put my handphone in standby from 12am to 8am .. hmm.gif

and i also notice one thing.. after i press exit..sometime the icon above will disappear.. but sometime it will still there with service disconnect.. then i have to enter viber and press exit again.. why is that so?

No, I'm on stock firmware. It doesn't bother me, though.

On the issue of custom ringtone - is there a file somewhere which we can replace? Where is the original call and notification ringtone stored? Or is it embedded in the app itself?

from what i understand, viber is now using a 'method' that supposedly makes it not run as a service at all... its what viber said is the C2DM mechanism. from what i understand, it means that viber will not run in the background. however, when a message or call comes in, then the server will somehow send this signal via this C2DM mechanism to our phone to activate viber. this way, we can then receive the call or message.

@Hico - no, after you exit button, it's simply killed, it doesn't run in the background (no battery consumption).
We'll look into the "auto run" of Viber that you're describing, and see if we can find this bug in our labs.
What @mydragoon explained is correct. C2DM "wakes" Viber to life, but before that happens, Viber is shut off completely.

@Dannyl - see answer above.
About ringtones - embedded in the app itself. We also don't want our users to alter the app itself, so we are working these days on the development of the custom ringtone option.

@dust - no landscape mode yet. This will be available only in Viber 2.1 (no dates yet).

Yeah I had that service is unavailable error yesterday too and I do have internet connectivity over WIFI so it could just be Viber server issue.
