Sifu(s) need some opinion on macro lens for my D5100
I have 2 lens to choose from (given with limited budget)
- Tamron 90mm AS AF Di (lastest with build in motor, not sure with this statement as different site show 2 versions) F/2.8
- Nikon 85mm ED VR F3.5

I have being googling this but havent found answers like sharpness accuracy and AF speed. I hope someone can help me out here smile.gif

I prefer 85/90 for working range with bugs (not incline w/ 105mm nikon, kill my pocket budget kaw kaw).
I have no idea on the performance of the new Nikon 85mm but the Tamron is one of the better 3rd party lenses for not so much money.

For macro, AF speed is not so important. You'd need to manual focus most of the time anyways.

Planning to use the lens for portrait too, I'm only concerned of the af speed for this area
Youtube only show Af barrel moving with lens cap on but not not with other subject
when to Mid-valley but the shops I went said they have no test unit for me to try out T~T

They put the lens cap to show the FULL focus.
For portrait you can hit the switch to limit the focus, which is shorter; But the Tamron unit is still slow and noisy, the lens extend quite far out when focusing, which can be quite annoying and "disturbing".

You have to try it to see whether you're ok with it.

Another cheap option is to use macro/close-up filter like Raynox DCR-250; You can invest on your Flash then tongue.gif

Don't need to look at replacement model. The latest and greatest will always be expensive.

Therefore if budget is a concern, aim for the D700 only. Kautim.

Yes, I use a Canon 500D filter attachment (this is the only Canon in my photographic armory) on my 300mm f/4 or 80-200mm/f2.8 lenses. Good for pseudo macro work.

Anyway, you get what you pay for. The best would be Nikon's 105mm f/2.8 VR.

5100's continuous shoot is only 4fps, so i believe class 6 is enough, right? what's the write rate of 5100 anyway?

Don't worry, suggest you to try out the lens and also the filter first, see which you prefer. Experience yourself is the best, at least you know and can determine what's best for you.

For the burst, it depends on many factor, firstly, the camera has internal buffer memory, which is kind of most important, if it's small, no matter how fast your card, once the buffer is full, it'll need time to clear.
Also depends if you shoot raw+jpeg, raw only, jpeg only. For jpeg, depends on the jpeg quality and also the processing settings (e.g. noise reduction, distortion, etc).

Only one problem with Nikon 105 f/2.8 VR... focus breathing...

Other than that, I think the price is worth it, you get Internal Focusing (no extension during focus), manual focus override, VR, Nano coatings, fast focusing (for macro lens), silent focus, excellent build quality and image quality. I think the price is not much different from 3rd party considering 3rd party lacks many of the features. If to include those feature to 3rd party, then the price might probably be close to Nikons. So, personally, I feel it's worth to get Nikon for this case unless one doesn't bother or care about those nice to have feature, which I personally find it important/really want it.
