anyone here doing civil engineering?
im a first year.
I think my structural and engineering mechanics lecturer sucks
since after A-levels Ive been wanting to deal with 3D problems, such as forces in 3D, moments, statics, all in 3D. I thought that I will learn it in my degree

mana tau,
my lecturer skips all the slides for the 3D tutorials, as if they are not important. Then he stresses A LOT on some very fundamental knowledge, such as the arrow of a vector indicates its sense, length magnitude, how to add or subtract vectors, etc etc.
problem is, a test is coming next week and I found out from the book he recommended to buy (which is supposedly a text book?) that there are a lot more to those 3D problems. And he didnt even touch on them.

Now im worried, if 3D is included in the test, I have a lot to catch up. He didnt even teach.

did you see the way he skips the slides or were you not listening and got scolded by him so you think he is good just because he scolded you?

Dr Mostapha? He's a nice lecturer. Just listen to what he told you guys. You can search for past year papers and I'm sure you can't find any 3D question being asked. So as for now, learn and fully understand the basic stuffs. They are useful for your future modules.

First thing, why are you assuming he scolded me? And why would I think he is good because he scolded me?
And no he did not scold me.

3D IS fundamental. It is just a combination of vectors and forces. Honestly it is part of pre-university teaching, and the lecturer did ask you to read up on your own if you can't catch up. Don't expect a lecturer to teach you every single thing for your exams.

No point quarreling among coursemates. You guys will be studying together for another 4 years and be prepared to work as group together one day.

3D ain't fundamental fyi and is not just as simple as vectors and forces.

He has his own way of teaching and I'm sure he just want to make sure everyone fully understand it. You won't want him to fast forward a topic which you don't understand, isn't it?

There are plenty of topics to cover in Structural module. So skipping 3D is actually good for you especially coming to final exam.

I understand that he has his own way of teaching and he just want to make sure everyone fully understand it. But he fast forwarded a topic which most of us don't understand, say, did you deal with 3D problems in mechanincs during your a levels or STPM?

3D are not covered in your module. So no worries. If you have any doubt, why not you ask the lecturer directly? Or find your tutor perhaps smile.gif

Next time, rather than spending your time worrying, ask the lecturer immediately if you have any problem/doubt.

Cheer and Good Luck in your test smile.gif

At least you can understand what he says when he's going at a pace you can catch up with. I am sure you would have met some lecturers where you'll never be able to concentrate or never be able to understand what ABC he says in the future.

Put it this way. Learning under a poor lecturer is also part of the university life.

Year 1 is mostly 2D. You can deal with 3D all you want when it comes to Year 2. That time you'll vomit blood.

I cry quietly everytime I realise the truth in tanjinjack's statement of 'dealing with bad lecturers is part of university life'. DAMN.

The last time it was RM30. Not sure how much it is now (whether there has been an increment).

Go to security office, ground floor of SA.
